As night approached, Claire rested her chin on her hand on the balcony outside the study, feeling the wind as she gazed over the entirety of Nafu City.
"Creak!" The sound of a door opening echoed as Regan walked in, carrying a plate of fruit.
"Young Master, this is fruit the citizens brought this morning. Please try some."
Claire didn't turn around, continuing to look out at the scenery. "Mhm, I see."
"What is Young Master looking at?" Regan asked, puzzled.
Hearing this, Claire finally turned her head, walked inside, picked up a piece of fruit from the table, and put it in her mouth. She then asked, "Don't you think Nafu City is a bit old?"
Regan didn't know what to say, so he replied, "It has been decades, after all. It's common for city districts to become old."
"Mhm," Claire nodded and continued, "What time is it now?"
"It's already past eleven..."
"Then it's about time," Claire said, turning her gaze back towards the city gates. "Our Steward should be leaving the city now."
Time rewound one day.
It was also evening then, in the Viscount's mansion's conference hall. Only Claire and Hant were in the room.
"Tomorrow night, our barony's Steward is leaving his post. From what I understand, he'll likely choose to depart at night. Do you know what to do?"
A cold glint flashed in Hant's eyes. "I do! My Lord!"
Claire continued, "Anyone higher than the wheels, I want them killed..."
Hant quickly chimed in, "My Lord, you are truly merciful."
"Those not higher than the wheels, place stones under their feet. What were you saying just now?"
Hant covered his mouth, realizing he had spoken too quickly. His mind raced as he quickly rephrased, "You are truly a wise Lord!"
At midnight, three carriages laden with heavy goods, escorted by a group of mercenaries, departed from Nafu City and headed towards the northern cities.
Frank looked back at Nafu City, where he had served for thirteen years, as they traveled under the cover of night. It would be impossible to make money so easily from now on.
While he was lost in melancholy, the screams of the mercenaries outside the carriage window reached him.
"What's going on!" Frank pulled out a small knife he had been holding and rushed out.
What greeted his eyes was the silver armor gleaming under the moonlight, and the familiar figure leading the group.
"Hant?!" Frank exclaimed in shock.
"It is I!"
"The Viscount told me to leave! What are you doing?!"
"Yes, aren't I letting you go? We're already dozens of miles from Nafu City," Hant said with a smile, holding his Greatsword.
As they spoke, the mercenaries were being eliminated by the knights under Hant's command. The two sides were not on the same level at all.
"Claire! I had an agreement with you, and you reneged! You scoundrel!" Frank could only roar in impotent rage.
"Pfft!" Hant's Greatsword pierced his chest. "How dare you disrespect the Lord! You deserve to die!"
"Claire! You bastard! Demon! I curse you to hell with me!"
"Stop shouting. The Lord asked me to give you a message," Hant said, pulling out his Greatsword.
Frank's face turned even paler, blood gushing from his chest. He struggled to speak, but forced himself to lift his head, wanting to know what Claire's final message was.
"The Lord says: You won't be lonely on your journey."
Frank froze, then seemingly realizing something, he burst into laughter. "Hahahahaha! Cough! Cough! Hahaha..." He died amidst his wild laughter.
Sixty knights quickly cleaned up the scene, leaving no trace behind.
"Rejoin formation! We need to return to Nafu City before dawn!"
"Yes!" The shouts of the youths echoed across the plain.
At dawn, the knight detachment, covered in the smell of blood, appeared within Nafu City.
The citizens gathered to watch the spectacle.
"Wow! Is that blood on them!"
"It's pungent! But they look so cool!"
"Indeed, a bloodstain suits that armor perfectly."
Meanwhile, Claire had arrived at the city gates early to welcome them. Upon seeing the knights, she praised them, "You have just removed a tumor from Nafu City!"
The youths smiled. It was a smile only they understood, and Claire was right; they had indeed removed a tumor from Nafu City.
Approaching Hant, Claire lowered her voice and asked, "How much did he take with him?"
Hant replied in a low voice, "About twenty thousand gold coins."
Claire's eyes flickered. So, my entire fortune is only thirty thousand gold coins, huh? I forgot there were also twenty thousand gold coins at home.
"Let's head back."
"Yes! Lord!"
Just then, the nobles, all smiles, came forward.
"Congratulations, Captain Hant, on your triumphant return!"
As they spoke, they shifted their bodies to look behind the knight procession, but they couldn't see what they wanted to see, no matter how hard they looked.
"Um... where is our cargo?!" Lord Wilbur asked directly.
"What cargo?" Hant feigned ignorance.
Claire chuckled from the side, "It's the cargo that these nobles had hijacked."
"Oh!" Hant pretended to suddenly understand. "The bandits said they had already resold that cargo."
"How is that possible!" Lord Wilbur shouted. "It's only been a few days, do those bandits have the ability to resell our cargo, worth tens of thousands, so quickly!"
Hant spread his hands. "That's what they said. If you don't believe me, why don't you go down and ask them?"
"You!" Lord Wilbur pointed at Hant's nose, about to curse him out, but Baron Eugene stopped him.
Baron Eugene was also suppressing his anger at this moment. He had a bad feeling and quickly probed Claire, "Your Excellency Viscount, when will our things be distributed?"
"Distribute what?" Claire took a few steps back, a smile appearing as she shouted loudly, "Oh! You mean the donations!"
Baron Eugene felt a sense of familiarity from Claire's actions; he had seen this before at the clinic.
"I want to thank you nobles for your monetary donations! A total of four hundred and thirty thousand gold coins! Truly generous!" As she spoke, Claire turned and pointed towards the city gate. "I plan to build a monument for you all here in the future, so that future generations will remember your selfless contributions when they see it!"
"Claire!" Baron Eugene's teeth were almost ground to dust!
"Clang!"
The uniform sound of swords being drawn echoed from the knight procession behind them. When the nobles looked, they saw the knights staring at them menacingly. If they made any sudden moves, the knights would surely draw their swords and attack.
"Click!" The sound of a magazine being chambered rang out. When they looked, the dark muzzles of guns were already aimed at them.
Terror appeared on the faces of the nobles, and they fled the scene, scrambling with their heads in their hands.
