Background / History
Regan served as the Griffin Family's butler during Claire Griffin's father's lifetime. When the family fell into debt and Claire returned to the remote coastal territory of Nafu City, Regan remained at his side, transporting what furniture and assets could be retained from the capital. Claire considers him exceptionally loyal and competent. 1 2
He initially shared the aristocratic contempt for commoners prevalent in the barony, referring to Claire's subjects as “despicable commoners” and reacting harshly when villagers acted defensively around the young Viscount. Claire directly corrected this outlook, stating that they were his subjects and that he intended to improve their lives. 2 3 Regan's attitude gradually softens through his interactions with Melly and Yuna; he becomes more sympathetic to servants' needs and grants Yuna an advance for her mother's treatment. 19 23
Following Claire's arrival in Nafu City, Regan helps establish the new lord's authority, manages recruitment, and administers the manor's household. Claire later formally appoints him Steward of the Griffin Barony, entrusting him with public notices and work-relief programs. 5 7 38
By the time of the war with Count Grein, Regan has become Claire's principal representative in civil and diplomatic affairs. He successfully negotiates the transfer of mining territory, reparations, and an evacuation deadline while supported by Isaac, Hant, and Griffin Barony's knights. 121 123 Claire increasingly delegates Nafu City's daily management to him, retaining responsibility mainly for major policy decisions. 126 232
Appearance
Regan is an older man with a square face, graying hair, and a graying beard. He typically wears refined butler's attire and is described as having a dependable appearance. 1 2
- Grizzled or graying hair and beard. 1 2
- Square-faced and reliably composed in appearance. 2
- Usually dressed in formal butler's clothing. 2
Personality
Regan is deeply devoted to Claire and the Griffin Family. He repeatedly worries about failing Claire's trust, from handling the household's finances to representing the barony before Count Grein. 12 121 His loyalty is practical rather than passive: he acts quickly on orders, handles difficult administration, and works beyond his expected duties when necessary. 53 126 154
Though often stern and status-conscious early on, Regan is not cruel by nature. His harsh treatment of staff contrasts with his eventual willingness to help Yuna with medical expenses, and Claire recognizes that his gruff exterior hides genuine kindness. 8 23 Melly's direct praise and persistence notably temper his demeanor. 19 23
Regan can become unexpectedly proud and forceful when defending Griffin Barony's interests. He deliberately adopts Claire's intimidating manner during the Cosi City negotiations, explaining that his earlier nervousness came from responsibility—not fear—and that victory should be asserted rather than concealed. 121 122
