Shane is the third son of Count Ansell, whose family built its reputation through trade. In the Ansell family, succession is determined by commercial success rather than birth order: the member who operates the most profitable caravan becomes the next count. Shane’s baronial title is honorary and does not include a fief. On his first trading journey, he personally led a caravan to Nafu City at eighteen or nineteen years old. 51
