Background / History

Two Identities

The celebrity Lin Yu and the player later inhabiting his body are different individuals sharing the same name. According to An Yin, the celebrity had taken the player’s original body and erased everything about the former Lin Yu. When the player returned to the real world, he could not locate his body and possessed a corpse in a tomb instead, becoming the Ghost King whom the celebrity called his “older brother” 128.

The celebrity subsequently supplied this supposed brother with humans to feed on. After Jiang Nuo killed the celebrity and defeated the Ghost King, a surviving fragment of the player’s soul reclaimed the restored body. From that point onward, the publicly recognizable Lin Yu was Jiang Nuo’s former teammate rather than the original entertainer 127 128.

The Player’s Partnership with Jiang Nuo

In the game world, Lin Yu was an established strategist when he approached Jiang Nuo, who had lost his left eye and been expelled from his previous team. Their partnership divided responsibilities: Jiang Nuo strengthened himself and killed monsters, while Lin Yu planned their strategies. Jiang Nuo learned many of his underhanded methods from him 168.

Lin Yu intended to use their partnership to win the team ranking tournament and obtain its wish voucher. Jiang Nuo refused to participate and instead planned to enter the individual tournament, threatening Lin Yu’s own ambitions. Lin Yu later admitted that he had valued Jiang Nuo for his usefulness, not friendship 168.

Inside the five-star Floating Life Tower instance, Lin Yu pushed Jiang Nuo into a blazing fire pool. Jiang Nuo survived and eventually killed him. Lin Yu subsequently returned to the real world as a soul, leading to his existence as the celebrity’s hidden Ghost King ally 128 168.

Celebrity Career and South Wind Manor

The celebrity cultivated a gentle public image and benefited from publicity pairing him with Si Yan. At South Wind Manor, he greeted Si Yan as an old friend, only for Si Yan to deny knowing him. His first handshake with Jiang Nuo also produced an instinctive aversion that both men later acknowledged feeling 18 19 69.

During the recording, Lin Yu encouraged Tian Dong’s resentment of Jiang Nuo while presenting himself as considerate. When Jiang Nuo charged an actress twenty thousand for a life-saving talisman, Lin Yu criticized the price; Jiang Nuo turned the intervention back on him, obliging him to promise payment to preserve his image 21 22.

He also positioned himself behind Si Yan in front of the cameras, creating the appearance that Si Yan was protecting him from a child ghost. His fans immediately used the scene to promote their pairing 33.

Casting Dispute and Pact with An Yin

For Brocade Rivers and Mountains, Lin Yu was invited to audition for the fourth male lead but attempted to obtain the second male lead, General Juechen. The director rejected the change after seeing Jiang Nuo’s audition. Lin Yu accepted his manager’s plan to spread claims that Jiang Nuo had stolen the role, and his company helped push the accusation onto Weibo’s trending list 50 52.

The production and Si Yan publicly refuted the allegation. Lin Yu then instructed his manager to pass a troubled streetwear brand’s endorsement to Jiang Nuo, intending it as a damaging “gift” 53 54.

Before the Bone Witch Tribe recording, Lin Yu sought help through the blood-fed shrine inside his coffin. An Yin appeared in a dream and offered him power in exchange for powerful souls. Lin Yu accepted eagerly, regarding strength independent of his “brother” as an advantage 69.

Bone Witch Tribe and Exposure

Lin Yu befriended Su Hen through their shared hostility toward Jiang Nuo, then secretly drained his Soul Power. When a supernatural chain threatened his access to Su Hen, he removed it under the guise of helping him 71 81 85.

Zhou Ling’s star chart revealed black threads extending from Lin Yu toward Su Hen’s collapsed figure. Attempting a closer examination caused the threads to strike her, leaving her bleeding from the eyes. She later identified Lin Yu to Si Yan as the person responsible for luring Qian Sen toward a loss of sanity 88 114.

Lin Yu subsequently tried to attack Jiang Nuo remotely through Zhang Quan. Jiang Nuo broke the Manipulation Technique, injured Lin Yu through the livestream, and removed the controlling thread from Zhang Quan’s body 113.

When Zhang Quan later attacked the Ghost King at Lin Yu’s home, Jiang Nuo discovered Lin Yu’s involvement and confronted him. Lin Yu drained his manager Brother Zhuang’s vitality to create an opening and struck Jiang Nuo with An Yin’s power. Jiang Nuo overpowered him, stabbed his heart, and learned from the system that Lin Yu was the world’s protagonist 125 126.

Jiang Nuo killed him after exhausting the yin energy sustaining his life. The protagonist’s death advanced the Save the Villain Plan to 70% 127.

Return and Final Death

After reclaiming the body, the returned player resumed Lin Yu’s place in the guest cast. His sharper observations and increased caution attracted Jiang Nuo’s attention during the Fragrant Tree Village expedition 128 133 156.

He repeatedly tried to isolate or kill Jiang Nuo: framing him for a child’s murder, controlling a zombie, and identifying Si Yan as a weakness he could exploit. Jiang Nuo reversed the framing attempt and had him confined to the ancestral hall 142 147 150.

As the seventh guiding soul, Lin Yu was forced into a coffin by Jiang Nuo. Rather than risk dying inside the illusion, he separated his soul from his body and followed his controlled corpse while concealing his ghostly power 156 157.

He then confronted He Jiu, the village’s Ghost King, intending to absorb his power. When He Jiu proved too strong, Lin Yu deduced his identity and negotiated an alliance with one demand: kill Jiang Nuo 163.

Jiang Nuo openly recognized him during the ensuing battle. Their confrontation exposed their former partnership and Lin Yu’s betrayal. Jiang Nuo prevented his soul from escaping with the Spirit-Binding Spell, slit his throat, and shattered his soul completely. The body decayed, and the replacement protagonist’s death advanced the Save the Villain Plan to 80% 165 168.

Appearance

  • Celebrity persona: Handsome, commonly dressed in a white shirt, with a carefully measured smile and an outwardly gentle manner 19 53 70.
  • After the player’s return: The same body appears more striking and fierce, replacing the celebrity’s deliberately mild presentation 128.
  • Concealed Gu Poison: Develops a dense, blister-like rash on his arm during the Fragrant Tree Village expedition and repeatedly hides it beneath his sleeve 137 142.
  • Game-world disguises: The player used multiple false faces. Jiang Nuo questions whether even the reclaimed body shows his true appearance 168.

Personality

Original Celebrity

Lin Yu carefully protects his reputation for kindness. He maintains a gentle expression under humiliation, intervenes as an apparent peacemaker, and uses camera positioning to encourage favorable interpretations of his behavior 19 22 33 82.

Privately, he is jealous, calculating, and ruthless. He encourages others to attack Jiang Nuo, supports a fabricated casting scandal, and murders his own manager when the man becomes useful as a source of vitality and a distraction 21 50 126.

His pursuit of Si Yan is explicitly tied to personal gain. He believes Si Yan’s natural-born spirit body can increase his luck more effectively than absorbing the luck of dozens of entertainers 69.

Returned Player

The player is a resourceful strategist who combines deception, psychological manipulation, and opportunistic alliances. He can abandon an unsuccessful attack for negotiation almost immediately, as shown when He Jiu’s growing power makes direct victory unlikely 163.

He treats companionship as conditional on usefulness. His resentment toward Jiang Nuo stems from frustrated tournament ambitions, and he continues mocking Jiang Nuo’s trust in teammates even while dying 168.

  • Suffers backlash when Jiang Nuo breaks the technique.
  • Loses control when Jiang Nuo removes the writhing thread embedded in Zhang Quan’s body 113.

  • Uses an incantation from outside this world to restrain He Jiu temporarily 163.
  • Cannot escape once Jiang Nuo applies the Spirit-Binding Spell 168.

Strategy and Deception

The player’s game-world reputation rests on planning and dirty tricks rather than straightforward combat 128 168.

  • Identifies the largest creature in each insect group as the key target during the mountain crossing 133.
  • Deduces He Jiu’s identity from his repeated absences during supernatural incidents 163.
  • Recognizes Si Yan as both An Yin’s target and Jiang Nuo’s emotional vulnerability 150.
  • Uses false appearances and feigned cooperation to conceal his intentions 163 168.

  • Game-world arsenal: The player formerly owned a cannon, pistol, giant hammer, and a boomerang obtained from a doll boss. Jiang Nuo took them as spoils after killing him in the game world 167.

Relationships

  • Jiang Nuo — The celebrity’s professional and supernatural rival; the player’s former teammate, betrayal victim, and eventual killer. Their old partnership supplied Jiang Nuo with many of his deceptive tactics 50 126 168.
  • Si Yan — The celebrity pursues him for popularity, luck, and spiritual energy. The returned player instead receives a mandatory order to kill him and offer his soul to An Yin 69 113 128.
  • An Yin — Patron of both occupants. Grants the celebrity power for soul offerings, then appoints the returned player as replacement protagonist 69 128.
  • Brother Zhuang / Da Zhuang — The celebrity’s manager and accomplice in publicity schemes. Lin Yu ultimately drains his vitality and throws him toward Zhang Quan to facilitate an escape 50 54 126.
  • Su Hen — A target befriended through shared resentment of Jiang Nuo, then secretly drained of Soul Power 71 81.
  • Zhou Ling — Witness to his hidden soul-draining activity; later informs Si Yan of his involvement with Qian Sen 88 114.
  • He Jiu — Fragrant Tree Village’s separate Ghost King. The returned player first attacks him for his power, then secures his cooperation against Jiang Nuo 163.
