Background

Hiruzen ruled Konoha for decades and led the village to victory in two Shinobi World Wars. His mastery of ninjutsu earned him the title “Professor of Ninjutsu” 100 172.

Orochimaru was once his proudest student. When Orochimaru defected, Hiruzen’s reluctance prevented him from delivering a killing blow—a decision he later remembered alongside his failures toward the Uchiha 100.

Appearance

  • Elderly features: Deep wrinkles, clouded eyes, and a back that becomes increasingly stooped during Konoha’s decline 7 89 178.
  • Hokage robes: Wears the robes of his office in negotiations and battle, including ceremonial attire when surrendering at the Moon Palace 7 184.
  • Pipe: Frequently carries or smokes a pipe, including during leadership meetings and his confrontation with Gen’yō 6 7.
  • Reincarnated body: Retains an aged appearance but possesses lucid eyes rather than the vacant expression of a controlled reincarnation. When he releases his full power, visible cracks heal and his ceremonial robe is cleared of dust 218 219.
  • Battle Demon God form: A dark-gold, armored ape-like monster with thick limbs, six chakra arms growing from its back, and Hiruzen’s face embedded in its chest 231.

Personality

Hiruzen initially favors compromise when open conflict threatens Konoha’s survival. He offers to restore the Uchiha Police Force’s authority and relocate the clan from its isolated compound, while recognizing that a costly internal war would expose Konoha to neighboring villages. Nevertheless, he abandons negotiation when Gen’yō refuses his terms and personally participates in an ambush 6 7.

His attachment to Konoha repeatedly conflicts with his treatment of the Uchiha. He presents the village as a family and the Hokage as its patriarch, yet defends exclusion and sacrifice as necessary for stability. Itachi’s accusations expose this contradiction during their final confrontation 219 220.

Defeat produces both self-doubt and renewed extremism. Hiruzen questions whether Konoha itself was the true source of evil, but later regrets not exterminating the Uchiha earlier. His willingness to surrender eventually overrides his pride, though his reincarnated self again fights to preserve Konoha and the Will of Fire 30 39 110 178 219.

Abilities & Skills

Five-Nature Ninjutsu

Hiruzen combines earth, water, fire, wind, and lightning with exceptional precision 8 33.

  • Uses Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall and Fire Style: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet during the Memorial Stone ambush 7.
  • Amplifies a fire dragon with Wind Release: Great Breakthrough 32.
  • Integrates earth walls, water barriers, fire, wind blades, and lightning into a combined offensive and defensive perimeter 33.
  • His academy reputation credits him with proficiency in more than a thousand ninjutsu; Itachi warns the younger Uchiha not to dismiss that expertise because of his political failures 218.

Five Release: Great Combo Technique

His signature compound technique joins all five basic chakra natures into a coordinated elemental cycle 33 36.

  • Its full-force version layers a lightning dragon, flames, cutting winds, surging water, and mountainous earth formations into an annihilating attack 36.
  • Creates a massive crater but consumes more than eighty percent of his living body’s chakra 36.
  • Cannot strike Gen’yō through Kamui Intangibility, leaving Hiruzen exhausted without injuring his opponent 36 37.

Summoning Technique: Monkey King Enma

Enma is Hiruzen’s long-standing combat partner and can transform into the Adamantine Staff 33 231.

  • Staff combat: Hiruzen uses Enma as a weapon and a platform for aerial movement 32 219.
  • Adamantine Prison Wall: Shields Hiruzen and other Konoha shinobi from the Uchiha compound’s detonation 17.
  • Living shield: Enma enlarges himself to intercept Gen’yō’s Kamui Shuriken while Hiruzen raises multiple earth walls. Gen’yō bypasses both defenses by teleporting the projectile 38.
  • Reincarnated strength: With the staff, Hiruzen shatters Uchiha Shō’s Susanoo and grievously wounds him in one strike 219.

Impure World Reincarnation

Hiruzen’s revived body supplies limitless chakra and frees him from the weakness of old age 219.

  • Retains his personality, judgment, and ability to speak independently 218 219.
  • Combines restored strength with accumulated battle experience and precise battlefield control 219.
  • Is repeatedly destroyed alongside Enma by Gen’yō’s Kamui before resorting to forbidden fusion 231.
  • Is ultimately destroyed by Gen’yō, who temporarily binds Hiruzen’s soul before it dissipates 234.

Forbidden Fusion: Battle Demon God

A Sarutobi Clan secret art fuses summoner and summoned beast, sacrificing their bodies and souls for short-lived destructive power 231.

  • Hiruzen invokes the summoning contract’s compulsory restraints to force Enma into the fusion despite his refusal 231.
  • The transformation’s energy storm kills Koharu and Homura 231.
  • Its physical pressure is judged comparable to Itachi’s Perfect Susanoo 231.
  • Its six chakra arms allow Hiruzen to gather the five elemental natures and Yin-Yang Release simultaneously 232.

Five Release: Yin-Yang Unity: Great Calamity Burial

Hiruzen’s final technique uses Yin-Yang Release to coordinate and elevate five immense elemental masses into a single destructive phenomenon 232.

  • Produces a multicolored calamity tornado directed at Gen’yō on the moon 232 233.
  • Consumes everything Hiruzen has committed to the fusion, including his remaining chakra, life, and soul 232.
  • Gen’yō stops the attack with one hand and absorbs it, rendering Hiruzen’s ultimate sacrifice ineffective 233.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Adamantine Staff — Enma’s transformed weapon form; central to Hiruzen’s close combat and defensive techniques 17 219.
  • Hokage robes and ceremonial attire — Symbols of his authority. Gen’yō tears away part of his robe with Kamui during their early confrontation 8 184.
  • Smoking pipe and tobacco box — Personal belongings regularly seen in the Hokage’s office 6 7.
  • Crystal ball — Used to observe the Uchiha Divine Army’s advance into the Land of Lightning 172.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Gen’yō — Former student and principal enemy. Their conflict begins with the Uchiha’s departure and ends with Gen’yō destroying Hiruzen’s reincarnated body and stripping away his beliefs 7 178 184 234.
  • Shimura Danzō — Lifelong associate whose covert operations repeatedly aggravate the Uchiha crisis. Hiruzen alternates between protecting him, blaming him, adopting his methods, and attempting to kill him under Gen’yō’s ultimatum 17 30 90 100.
  • Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Old friends and senior advisers. Their disastrous independent offensive deepens Konoha’s collapse; both later defend Hiruzen and die in the storm caused by his final fusion 7 110 220 231.
  • Monkey King Enma — Trusted summoning partner. Their lifelong cooperation ends when Hiruzen forces him into a mutually destructive forbidden technique 33 231.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Hiruzen calls him a former proud student. Itachi rejects his claims of protection and confronts him over the Uchiha’s persecution and blood debts 219 220.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Former subordinate and battlefield opponent. Fugaku declares Konoha an enemy of the Uchiha and fights Hiruzen with his Mangekyō abilities 32 33.
  • Jiraiya and Tsunade — Students who accompany him to the Moon Palace. Tsunade resists surrender, while Jiraiya argues that their established methods cannot defeat Gen’yō 172 179 184.
  • Orochimaru — Former prized student whose defection Hiruzen failed to stop decisively. Orochimaru later expresses genuine shock upon learning that his teacher surrendered 100 193.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Uchiha Defection and the Memorial Stone Ambush

After Gen’yō kills attacking Root operatives, Hiruzen condemns the deaths of Konoha “comrades” while initially overlooking the slain Uchiha sentries. Facing Gen’yō’s threats, he offers concessions and withdraws rather than risk a battle that could cripple the village 6.

Hiruzen subsequently invites Gen’yō to a supposedly private meeting at the Memorial Stone. He appeals to the Uchiha ancestors’ sacrifices and defends the clan’s treatment as serving the greater good. When persuasion fails, concealed Anbu and Root operatives attack alongside him. Kamui renders the assault ineffective, and Gen’yō humiliates him by tearing away part of his Hokage robe 7 8.

Destruction of the Uchiha Compound

Hiruzen and Danzō lead more than a thousand shinobi to surround the abandoned compound. Gen’yō detonates a spatial array beneath it, destroying the compound and much of southeastern Konoha. Hiruzen’s use of Enma’s Adamantine Prison Wall prevents the surviving group from being annihilated 13 17.

With rumors of mass defection spreading internationally, Hiruzen orders a cover story claiming that the Uchiha died heroically in an experimental accident. He also disbands the Konoha Military Police Force 17.

Pursuit Campaign and Crushing Defeat

The loss of fifty-three elite Root pursuers drives Hiruzen to order full war readiness and personally lead several thousand Konoha elites against the Uchiha. Koharu and Homura warn that the campaign could cripple Konoha, but he insists that Gen’yō must die before another village allies with him 30.

After fighting Fugaku, Hiruzen targets Gen’yō with his strongest Five Release combination. The attack fails against Kamui Intangibility. His subsequent attempt to shield the pursuing army also fails when Gen’yō teleports a Kamui Shuriken past his defenses 32 33 36 37 38.

Gen’yō deliberately leaves Hiruzen alive, reasoning that a broken Hokage will damage Konoha more than a dead martyr. Hiruzen is left questioning whether the village had misidentified its true enemy 39 40.

Mikoto’s Release and Danzō’s Exposure

Under threat of Konoha’s destruction, Hiruzen orders Anbu to retrieve the bloodied, unconscious Mikoto from Root custody. Gen’yō then exposes Danzō’s conspiracies to the village and demands that Hiruzen execute him 89 90.

Hiruzen takes the offered kunai and acknowledges that both men were wrong. Before he can strike, Danzō activates the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, threatening everyone nearby 90.

Political Collapse and the Faceless Ones Disaster

As the Uchiha Divine Kingdom rises, Hiruzen rejects cooperation with Akatsuki and instead proposes infiltrating the kingdom through Danzō’s surviving agents. The Land of Fire’s daimyo then demands action against the Uchiha within three days and threatens to cut Konoha’s funding by ninety percent. Hiruzen coughs up blood and collapses 99 100.

He awakens after two days to learn that Koharu and Homura have sacrificed more than thirteen hundred shinobi in the failed Faceless Ones operation. Seeing the stakes outside the hospital and the villagers’ hatred, he declares the Will of Fire dead and tells his companions that little remains for them to do 110.

Surrender at the Moon Palace

The destruction inflicted on the Land of Lightning forces Hiruzen to accept that resistance cannot save Konoha. He orders Jiraiya to inform the Toad Sage that the Child of Prophecy has appeared, then announces his intention to submit a surrender document 172 178.

Despite opposition from Tsunade and Danzō, Hiruzen travels to the Moon Palace with Jiraiya and Tsunade. Before Gen’yō, he presents a document transferring the Land of Fire’s highest authority and admits, “Konoha has lost” 179 184.

Reincarnated Last Stand

Hiruzen later confronts the Uchiha legion atop Hokage Rock as an independently acting Impure World Reincarnation. He describes Konoha as their home, releases his restored strength, and grievously wounds Shō. Itachi answers by publicly accusing him of isolating the Uchiha, suppressing Fugaku, and conspiring in the clan’s destruction 218 219 220.

Public condemnation shatters Hiruzen’s remaining composure. After repeated defeats, he forces Enma into the Battle Demon God fusion and unleashes Great Calamity Burial. Gen’yō stops and absorbs the attack, then breaks the fused body 223 231 232 233 234.

Gen’yō uses Kamui: Will Deprivation to erase Hiruzen’s memories, beliefs, and resolve, destroys his reincarnated body, and briefly binds his soul to witness the new era. Hiruzen warns that slumbering gods have been awakened before his soul dissipates 234.
