Background
Ao is a veteran of the Second Shinobi World War and one of Genji’s trusted subordinates. Despite his youth, he holds a relatively important position within Kirigakure’s senior ranks and handles administrative work alongside field assignments. His association with Genji, however, does not earn him much trust from Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura 51 75 82.
When ordered to lead a squad of academy graduates, Ao initially considers the assignment an obstacle to his own advancement. He hopes to become Mizukage and would rather undertake difficult missions to improve his abilities and reputation. Reviewing the records of Kei, Mei Terumi, and Kisame Hoshigaki changes his mind: he recognizes that their potential could make them valuable future supporters 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Upright, gray-blue hair 49.
- Clothing: A standard-issue Mist Ninja flak jacket over a navy-blue combat outfit 49.
- Age and bearing: A young man whose presence noticeably exceeds that of the ordinary Chunin collecting other graduate teams 49.
- Eyes: Has not received a Byakugan transplant at his introduction 49.
Personality
Ao is punctual, direct, and strongly committed to practical experience. He introduces himself to Team 7 by stating that he believes in proving things through action, then schedules their first mission for the following morning. Rather than relying entirely on academy records, he personally tests his students’ speed and endurance 49 50 52.
His early confidence sometimes exceeds his judgment. He deliberately chooses an uncertain first assignment as a training opportunity, believing its risks manageable. After the mission nearly kills both him and Kei, he accepts primary responsibility as captain and recognizes his own immaturity. His subsequent approach becomes more cautious and systematic 53 69 77.
Ao’s concern for his students grows beyond his initial political ambitions. He monitors their physical limits, warns them against excessive training, and tries to keep them out of high-level political struggles. By the end of the Chunin Exams, he believes Kirigakure’s future rests with Team 7—especially Kei—rather than himself 52 78 143.
He remains composed in official dealings without being entirely deferential. Shinji Akita finds him unusually rational and cooperative compared with other Mist Ninja, while Ao answers Konoha’s pointed hospitality with restrained sarcasm. His loyalty to village procedure ultimately prevents him from challenging lawful orders even when he fears for Kei’s safety 58 89 181.
Abilities & Skills
Combat Ability
- Jonin-level strength: An experienced battlefield veteran, though described as an ordinary Jonin rather than an exceptionally powerful one 62 75.
- Close combat: Uses a kunai to intercept Hato’s weapon and prevent him from attacking Kei and Mei 63.
- Chakra-assisted movement: Channels chakra through his feet for rapid movement; maintains a pace that tests his students’ endurance over several hours 52 62.
- Limitations: Hato and three supporting Cloud Ninja overwhelm him through a coordinated assault. Fighting Hato afterward while already wounded leaves him critically injured 62 65.
- Contribution against Hato: Inflicts injuries that restrict Hato’s later movements and materially improve Kei’s chances of surviving their fight 108.
Water Release
- Great Waterfall Technique: Expels a large volume of water as a surging wave. Against Hato, Ao uses it to force the enemy Jonin back and separate him from the battle involving his students 63.
Earth Release
- Rupture Jutsu: Sends violent tremors through the ground. Ao uses it to force Hato back while escaping the Cloud Ninja encirclement 62.
Hidden Mist Technique
- Creates dense mist that obstructs vision across the battlefield 150.
- Coordinates its use with Goro and Otokaze to cover the surviving Mist Ninja’s scattered retreat from Root 150.
Leadership, Investigation & Administration
- Student assessment: Tests abilities firsthand, adjusts exertion to avoid pushing children beyond their limits, and selects missions to build experience 52 77.
- Investigation: Evaluates killing methods and entry traces while keeping alternative explanations open rather than treating the likeliest theory as proven 56 57.
- Strategic reporting: Recognizes Kujiraai Island’s importance to Kirigakure’s northeastern defenses and urgently requests reinforcements after discovering Cloud involvement 71.
- Diplomacy: Leads Kirigakure’s delegation to Konoha, assesses other villages’ intentions, and conveys the Third Hokage’s assurances to the Mizukage 83 91 112.
- Medical limitations: Can assess the seriousness of Kei’s injuries, but does not know Medical Ninjutsu; Team 7 must seek outside treatment 68 69.
Equipment
- Kunai: Used in close combat against Hato 63.
- Mist Ninja flak jacket and combat outfit: His standard clothing when introduced as Team 7’s instructor 49.
Relationships
- Minazuki Kei — Student and subordinate. Kei saves Ao from Hato’s finishing attack; Ao later regards him as especially important to Kirigakure’s future and worries when he is deployed against the Sand Ninja 65 143 181.
- Mei Terumi — Student and subordinate. Ao values her strength and perceptiveness; she assists him in taking the wounded Kei to safety after the Kujiraai battle 69 77 85.
- Kisame Hoshigaki — Student and subordinate. Ao recognizes his exceptional endurance and combat ability. Ao’s willingness to protect his students during the Konoha crisis helps Kisame understand devotion to comrades and village 52 77 111.
- Genji — Patron and senior authority. Ao treats him with deep respect. Genji orders him to become a squad captain, an assignment Ao eventually understands as a test of his own maturity 51 77.
- Karatachi Yagura — Mizukage and superior. Ao reports strategic intelligence directly to him and accepts his delegation assignment, despite limited personal trust between them 75 82 83.
- Shinji Akita — Investigative partner on Kujiraai Island. Their cooperation ends when Akita and his guards are killed before Kei and Mei reach Ao 57 58 62.
- Goro and Otokaze — Fellow Jonin accompanying the Konoha delegation. They help plan emergency communications and coordinate the retreat from Root’s ambush 110 150.
- Hato — Enemy Kumogakure Jonin. Their battle leaves Ao critically wounded, but Ao’s resistance also weakens Hato before Kei confronts him 65 108.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Formation of Team 7
- Ao collects Kei, Mei, and Kisame from the academy and leads them to the western outskirts of Kirigakure before introducing himself as their instructor 49.
- On January 12, he tests their speed and endurance during the journey to their first assignment. He ends the test when Kei and Mei approach exhaustion, with Kisame retaining the greatest stamina 52.
- Judging their strength sufficient to skip introductory D-rank work, he assigns them a C-rank investigation into deaths on Kujiraai Island 52 53.
Kujiraai Island Investigation
- Ao and Shinji Akita investigate the Yamamoto family massacre. The efficient killings suggest ninja involvement, but evidence that the victims admitted their attackers prevents a definite conclusion 56 57.
- The investigation separates Team 7. Ao accompanies Akita while his students pursue other leads 57 58.
- Hato and three Cloud Ninja surround and wound Ao. Kei and Mei intervene, allowing him to escape the encirclement and engage Hato separately 62 63.
- Hato critically injures Ao, leaving a charred wound in his abdomen. Kei blocks the follow-up attack, briefly tends Ao’s wounds, and takes over the fight 65.
- After Kei defeats Hato, Ao helps arrange evacuation and treatment. He requests Mist reinforcements and returns with Team 7 on January 18, confirming that the mission will be recorded and paid as A-rank 68 69 71.
- His report on possible Kumogakure aggression prompts Yagura to reconsider Kirigakure’s strategic priorities 75.
Regular Missions
- Ao restricts subsequent assignments mostly to the Land of Water’s main island, combining C-rank work with selected B-rank missions 77.
- Team 7 completes nearly twenty missions in three months. By the time they eliminate a group of Kusagakure missing-nin, Ao no longer needs to intervene directly 77.
- Despite praise for their efficiency, he insists the students need more experience before routinely undertaking A-rank work 78.
Chunin Exams Delegation
- Yagura appoints Ao to lead Kirigakure’s delegation to Konoha. Beyond entering Team 7 in the exams, his task is to observe Konoha and the other villages to inform Kirigakure’s next political move 83 91.
- After Team 7 reports attacks by enemies disguised as Cloud Ninja, Ao summons Goro and Otokaze and prepares emergency communications. He orders his students to carry the intelligence home as a backup measure 110 111.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi’s intervention leads to the delegation remaining for the exams. Ao tells Team 7 that Konoha has classified the incident as a misunderstanding and cleared them for the third round 112.
- Following Kei’s championship victory, Ao schedules the delegation’s departure for eight the next morning 143.
Root Ambush and Return
- Thirty or forty masked Root operatives ambush the delegation, dividing the defenders and preventing Ao and the other Jonin from aiding the Genin 147.
- Recognizing that the group cannot win, Ao coordinates a Hidden Mist screen and signals the survivors to scatter 150.
- Ao escapes and sends Yagura an account of the attack before knowing whether the others survived 159.
- After reuniting with Team 7, he suspends their missions and hints that a Konoha faction outside the Hokage’s direct command may be responsible 162 163.
Reduced Field Role
- On July 13, Ao summons Team 7 for their personal promotion to Chunin by the Fourth Mizukage 173.
- He remains their captain in name but tells them they will normally undertake missions without his direct leadership 175.
- Subsequently confined largely to internal affairs, Ao discovers that Kei has been sent to the Land of Rivers to face Sand Ninja. He investigates but decides against appealing to Genji or Yagura: the orders are procedurally valid, and the surrounding conflict between the Mizukage and major clans leaves him unable to intervene 181.
Notable Quotes
“I've always believed in proving everything through action.” 49
“Even if you're training on your own, remember to balance work and rest. That's especially important at your age. Your bodies are still growing, so don't try to force their development.” 78
“We're not afraid of trouble, but we absolutely mustn't cause any, especially at a sensitive time like this.” 90
Trivia
- Kei recognizes Ao as the younger counterpart of the original story’s “Byakugan Ao.” At this point in the novel, he has not received that eye, and his younger appearance initially prevents Kei from recognizing him 49.
- Kei’s assessment of Ao’s eventual limitations—below Quasi-Kage level—is based on his knowledge of the original story, not a documented advancement or loss of rank in this timeline 50.
