|---|---|---|
| Mortal without a Spirit Root | 1 | Cannot cultivate through the Lin Household’s conventional methods. His young body is initially weakened by years of inadequate food 7. |
| First Body Tempering | 8 9 | Secretly applies a tiny amount of pure Essence of the Sun to himself, enduring hours of pain. Gains greatly increased strength, healed wounds without scars, and improved physical performance. He later identifies this tempering as strengthening his skin and flesh 43. |
| Second Body Tempering | 23 | Uses a drop of Essence of the Sun eight days after the first tempering. Expels gray-black impurities and becomes impervious to his cleaver and refined-steel arrows. He later associates this stage with tempering his tendons and bones 43. |
| Third Body Tempering | 43 | Swallows a drop of pure Essence of the Sun after another eight-day adaptation period. The transformation reaches his internal organs, enabling prolonged underwater activity and clear underwater vision. Fetal Breathing and highly concealed Qi fluctuations are subsequently documented 47 48. |
Background / History
On Blue Star, Lin He was a programmer who escaped his exhausting work schedule by reading cultivation novels. After working through three consecutive nights to meet a deadline, he collapsed over his keyboard and died. He awakened in the Cangming Realm in the body of another Lin He, the Lin Household’s eleventh son 1.
His new body belonged to a concubine-born mortal without a Spirit Root. His mother, a mortal maid, had died of illness years earlier, and his father—the household head—paid him little attention afterward. His mother left him a jade gourd inherited through her family, intended as a keepsake for his future wife. Lin He concealed it from the household’s cultivators 1 4.
Once he reached marriageable age, the Lin Household arranged his marriage to Su Qiuran to remove him from the household while securing commercial benefits from the Su Household. During their sparsely attended wedding, a remark about a company annual party prompted an exchange of familiar catchphrases, revealing that both spouses were transmigrators from Blue Star 1.
Steward Lin Fu subsequently delivered the couple to Emerald Mountain Village. Instead of their allotted fifty low-grade spirit stones, he left them only five hundred copper coins and two pieces of silver 1.
Appearance
- Early appearance: Fair, clean skin and hands without calluses make him stand out from ordinary farm laborers, even in worn clothing 5.
- After body tempering: Remains lean and slender despite his extraordinary strength; his skin develops a faint tautness after the second tempering 23.
- Everyday clothing: Wears coarse work clothes and commonly carries his chopping blade at his waist 40.
- Market disguise: Wears an oversized black robe made from quilt covers, with Su Qiuran concealed on his back beneath it. The resulting silhouette is bulky and misshapen; chicken blood around the collar reinforces its threatening appearance 35.
Personality
Lin He is flippant, sarcastic, and fond of interpreting his circumstances through webnovel tropes. He jokes about being a destined protagonist and waiting for a system, but readily admits that confronting a cultivator while still mortal would be suicidal. Banter with Su Qiuran helps both of them cope with their impoverished start 2 3 6.
His caution is learned rather than absolute. He initially considers searching the Immortals’ Mass Grave for treasure and secretly risks his life experimenting with pure Essence of the Sun. After seeing Su Qiuran’s distress, he apologizes for concealing the experiment. Later, he decisively rejects Wu De’s proposed expedition, preferring farming and talisman sales to a likely death trap 8 10 42.
He is protective and conscientious toward people he trusts. After surviving an attempted robbery, he refuses to leave Su Qiuran alone in their unsecured home. He promptly pays Old Man Sun his promised spirit stone and later offers financial help when the villagers are evacuated 21 23 27.
Despite his previous-life aversion to violence, he can act ruthlessly when threatened. He kills the hunter who ambushed him rather than risk leaving a dangerous enemy alive, although the act leaves him pale and physically sickened 21.
Abilities & Skills
Essence of the Sun Body Cultivation
Lin He uses the jade gourd’s Essence of the Sun to strengthen his body despite lacking a Spirit Root 10 43.
- Strength: Lifts Su Qiuran together with her wheelchair, pulls a loaded cart weighing over three hundred jin, and effortlessly draws a 120-jin bow 9 11 12.
- Durability: After his second tempering, his cleaver and steel arrow cannot mark his skin. He also survives a Qi Refinement cultivator’s wind blade without injury 23 43.
- Speed and endurance: Runs over rough terrain while carrying Su Qiuran and circles through woodland for nearly half an hour to shake possible pursuers 36.
- Enhanced senses and reflexes: Evades a crossbow ambush, catches a fleeing Fanged Spotted Rabbit by hand, and detects faint movement near the reeds 20 24 34.
- Limits: Tempering causes extreme pain. His resistance to a wind blade does not establish immunity to every Law Technique, and he initially avoids cultivators because their combat abilities are unknown 23 43.
Fetal Breathing and Underwater Movement
His third tempering enables extended exploration beneath Golden Lake 43 47.
- Automatically enters a low-consumption state underwater without needing to deliberately hold his breath 44.
- Sees fish, submerged timber, and details on the lakebed clearly at roughly twenty meters’ depth 43.
- Moves smoothly through the water and experiences neither discomfort from the cold nor distress from the pressure at that depth 43 44.
- Reports having spent more than half a double-hour underwater. He reasons that Golden Lake’s spiritual-power-draining mechanism may not affect his Essence-powered cultivation path; this remains his assessment rather than a completed test of the mechanism 50.
Qi and Blood Control
After three temperings, Lin He appears to cultivators to possess no spiritual Qi fluctuations, despite his powerful physique 48.
- His internal circulation and surging Qi and blood allow him to withstand Tang Lie’s Qi Refinement Ninth Layer spiritual pressure during the auction 49.
- Tang Lie specifically recognizes his unusual ability to contain his Qi and blood 49.
- Withstanding that pressure is not shown to make him Tang Lie’s equal in combat 49.
Archery and Hunting
Lin He begins as an inexperienced archer, improving through Su Qiuran’s training plan and Old Man Sun’s practical instruction 10 12 15.
- Progresses from missing his first shot to landing three consecutive arrows in a stump thirty paces away 12 17.
- Shoots rabbits through the hind leg to capture them alive for sale 20.
- Counters a crossbow ambush by shooting the attacker through the thigh and pinning him to a tree root 20.
- His exceptional strength steadies the heavy bow, but he initially lacks proper posture and hunting technique 12 15.
Farming, Fishing, and Observation
- Spirit farming: Revives withered seeds with lunar essence, enriches soil with powdered spirit stones, and accelerates crop growth with diluted solar essence 32 33.
- Net fishing: Controls his waist, arm, and wrist movements to spread a casting net into a full circle; teaches Old Man Sun and Shuigen the technique 30 37.
- Acting and concealment: Feigns scarcity when selling herbs, adopts a rustic persona when buying seeds, and uses a hoarse voice for his black-robed market identity 18 31 35.
- Attention to detail: Notices that a supposed blacksmith’s calluses match weapon use rather than hammer work, exposing flaws in the neighbor’s cover story 47.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Jade Gourd / “Little Green Bottle” — His maternal family heirloom. Produces solar and lunar essences used for plant growth, seed restoration, and body tempering. Lunar essence revives Su Qiuran’s dormant Spirit Root but has no apparent effect on Lin He when tested 4 16 32.
- Black-python-sinew bow — Made from hundred-refined steel and black python sinew, with a 120-jin draw weight. Purchased with arrows for six hundred copper coins 12.
- Refined-steel wolf-fang arrows — Used for target practice, hunting, and self-defense 12 17 20.
- Short-handled chopping blade — Bought for one hundred copper coins; serves as a weapon, brush-clearing tool, improvised hoe, and digging implement 12 13 32 40.
- Oversized black disguise robe — Conceals Su Qiuran on his back and helps establish their intimidating market persona 35.
- Broken black iron sword — A fragment identified at auction as part of a High-Grade Law Artifact. Lin He buys it for the equivalent of six hundred low-grade spirit stones using spirit grain and talismans. Its dark-gold inscriptions match Ingot’s shell and warm at his touch 48 49.
- Voice transmission talisman — Given by Tang Lie; burning it can alert him within a hundred li 50.
Relationships
- Su Qiuran — Wife, fellow Blue Star transmigrator, and closest partner. She directs his combat training and handles talisman creation, while he supplies physical protection, farming labor, and market transactions. Their arranged marriage develops into an intimate relationship 1 10 26 35 42.
- Old Man Sun — Hunting mentor and trusted companion. Lin He saves him from the Mass Grave’s influence, honors their profit-sharing agreement, and helps him during the evacuation 15 23 26 27.
- Goudan — Duck-headed, dog-bodied household companion. Lin He hatches the mysterious red egg with Essence of the Sun and names the creature 14.
- Ingot — Treasure-finding snapping turtle. Lin He takes it home, discovers its ability to locate spirit stones, and digs it a private pond 37 39 40.
- Shopkeeper Wu — Buyer of Lin He’s live Fanged Spotted Rabbits and a useful source of information about the Li Household 19 21 40.
- Shopkeeper Qian — Green Spike Grass buyer at Spring Restoration Hall. Lin He conceals the true source and production capacity of his superior herbs from him 12 18.
- Tang Lie — Dangerous Qi Refinement Ninth Layer rogue cultivator. Takes an interest in Lin He’s physique and knowledge of the sword inscriptions, offering a Spirit Assault Pill for deciphering them 49 50.
- Lin Fu — Lin Household steward who withholds most of the couple’s settlement allowance. Lin He resents him but initially avoids confrontation because of their power gap 1 2.
- Zhao Fugui and Zhao De — Village head and head constable who attempt to coerce and arrest him after a dispute over his catch. Su Qiuran challenges Zhao De’s jurisdiction 44 45.
