Appearance
- Color and clarity: The first stone Lin He receives is a translucent, milky-white crystal with a soft glow 19 21.
- Size: Shopkeeper Wu’s payment is fingernail-sized. The buried stone Ingot later finds is an irregular diamond shape, roughly half the size of Lin He’s palm 19 39.
- Texture: Hard and crystalline; when smashed, the stones break into fine, faintly glowing powder 32 33 39.
- Sensation: When Shopkeeper Wu reveals a stone, Lin He feels the surrounding air become fresher, with a faint coolness that seems to open his pores 19.
Properties & Uses
Stored Spiritual Qi
Spirit Stones contain densely compressed Spiritual Qi within an extremely stable crystalline structure 19.
- Cannot be absorbed directly by Qi Refinement cultivators: Su Qiuran explicitly rejects Lin He’s suggestion that she cultivate by holding a stone and drawing out its power 19.
- Require conversion for low-level users: Unlike free-floating atmospheric Spiritual Qi, their stored energy must first be converted into a usable form for low-level Qi Refinement cultivators and mortals 19.
- Can be processed through spirit crops: Spirit rice absorbs the Qi supplied to its soil and converts it into nutrients and spiritual power suitable for consumption 19.
Soil Enrichment
Low-Grade Spirit Stones make it possible to grow spirit rice in mortal soil that lacks sufficient Spiritual Qi 29 32.
- Formation method: Su Qiuran proposes burying stones in the soil and setting up a formation 19.
- Powdered fertilizer: Lin He instead crushes the stones with the back of his knife and mixes the powder evenly into loosened earth 32 33.
- Growth acceleration is not a substitute: The Jade Gourd’s Essence of the Sun speeds plant growth, but cannot sustain spirit rice in Qi-deficient soil without the stone fertilizer 34.
| Planting | Stones Used | Result |
|---|---|---|
| First restored-seed crop | Two | Revived seeds, stone fertilizer, and diluted Essence of the Sun produce nearly five jin of Green Jade Spirit Rice 32. |
| Second-generation crop | Two | Saved seeds yield nearly ten jin from two-tenths of a mu 33 34. |
| Later, more heavily fertilized crop | Five | A stronger harvest supplies the spirit rice that brings Su Qiuran to Qi Refinement First Layer Perfection 38. |
Currency
Low-Grade Spirit Stones purchase spirit seeds, talisman-making materials, medicinal herbs, and artifacts. Their value differs sharply between social groups: a stone may be a cultivator’s casual tip, but represents a fortune to a mortal 18 36 48.

History
First Earnings
Lin He initially receives no Spirit Stones when expelled from the Lin Household. Lin Fu substitutes five hundred copper coins and two pieces of silver for the fifty-stone allowance, claiming that carrying such wealth would expose a mortal to murderous cultivators 1.
The Li Household’s Fanged Spotted Rabbit bounty gives Lin He his first access to Spirit Stones. He sells one rabbit to Shopkeeper Wu, then earns three stones from a subsequent delivery and six from another. He shares the proceeds with Old Man Sun, who initially requests a stone to send to his son working for cultivators 19 21 23 26 27.
Farming and Talisman Income
After moving to Golden Lake Village, Lin He spends a stone on Wu De’s aged seeds and uses powdered stones to fertilize successive spirit-rice crops. By the second harvest, only three stones remain—enough for at most one more planting—prompting Su Qiuran to suggest selling their improved seeds 29 31 32 33 34.
Their disguised seed sale earns eighty stones. After purchasing talisman-making supplies, they retain seventy-one, their largest fortune since transmigrating. Su Qiuran then pursues talisman-making as a less conspicuous source of income than repeatedly selling exceptional seeds 35 36.
Ingot’s Discovery
After eating spirit rice and displaying golden shell inscriptions, Ingot digs up a Low-Grade Spirit Stone in the backyard. Su Qiuran identifies its ability to detect a stone through half a meter of soil as evidence of a special treasure-hunting talent 39 40.
