| Level-one skill access | 6 | Players begin with two skill slots. Many weapon and support skills are available immediately; their proficiency systems cap at 1,000. |
| Basic sword mastery | 7 | Wang Shui activates Linear after training and sparring with Luke, acquiring One-Handed Straight Sword through practice rather than the interface. |
| Level-five slot expansion | 11 | Wang Shui gains a third normal skill slot, allowing another skill tree to be equipped. |
| Flying Sword acquisition | 12 | Wang Shui acquires the throwing skill despite having filled his three normal slots. It appears separately, which he attributes to his innate ability's unrestricted learning. |
| Above 100 weapon proficiency | 13 | Sonic Leap requires proficiency above 100; Kirito demonstrates it during his duel with Wang Shui. |
| Sword Skills Blade Bullet extension | 27 | The Extinguished Spark introduces ammunition that stores Sword Skill energy and returns it to weapons as enhancements. |
| Firearm-exclusive Sword Skill | 28 | Famed Gun: Blackwater grants Limit Burst, which fires all remaining ammunition while the trigger is held down. |
System Mechanics
Skill Trees and Equipment
- Equipped skills are passive foundations. Entries such as One-Handed Straight Sword, Short Sword, Curved Sword, and Club provide access to the actual techniques within their associated trees 6.
- Weapon compatibility matters. Using a corresponding Sword Skill normally requires both an appropriate weapon and its passive skill equipped in a limited skill slot 6.
- “Sword Skill” is not restricted to swords. The term also covers throwing techniques, dagger attacks, support-tree movement techniques, and later firearm abilities 9 13 28.
- Some techniques cross weapon categories. Linear is a general one-handed technique, although registering it with a one-handed hammer is difficult. Rage Spike is intended for one-handed straight swords but is not exclusive to them 7 10.
Learning and Unlocking
- Reaching a proficiency threshold does not automatically place the corresponding Sword Skills in the interface. Players must discover and master them independently or learn from an appropriate instructor 6.
- Instructors operate from training grounds on a backstreet northwest of the Town of Beginnings' central plaza. Rare and hidden techniques may also require instruction or independent discovery 6.
- Wang Shui's Arrogant Knower prevents ordinary interface-based acquisition. Luke instead teaches him thrusts, downward chops, rising cuts, horizontal slashes, and diagonal slashes 6 7.
- Correct movements alone do not complete Wang Shui's learning. After sparring, Luke identifies the missing element as combat intent—the desire to attack, defeat, or kill rather than merely rehearse movements 7.
- Later blade-bullet techniques cannot be taught by the existing intelligent instructor NPCs because the update cannot be synchronized with them. Players must explore these techniques themselves 28.
Activation and Execution
- Sword Skills refine ordinary attack movements into enhanced techniques. Activation depends on the required posture, movement, weapon control, and concentration 7 9 10.
- Charging techniques can propel the user forward or into the air. Luke advises moving the feet with the charge or briefly lifting them rather than planting them to brake 7.
- Execution quality affects performance. Disrupted spacing and movements leave Wang Shui's Rage Spike poorly completed and weaker against a Ruin Kobold 12.
- Techniques allow some variation: Wang Shui deliberately releases Horizontal slowly while advancing, pursuing Shino for seven or eight steps 17.
- Sword Skill colors are not fixed identifiers. Their brightness and purity vary somewhat with execution 14.
Damage, Recovery, and Limits
- Weapon quality: Weapon level, enhancement level, and rarity provide major damage improvements. Character attributes also contribute to Sword Skill damage, while some techniques have specific scaling, such as Armor Pierce's agility scaling 20.
- Weapon weight: A heavier weapon can increase damage while making activation and recovery harder. With the Anneal Blade, Wang Shui succeeds at Linear only once in three attempts, whereas the body-driven Rage Spike remains reliable 10.
- Attack recovery: Slant and Horizontal become harder to stop with the heavier blade. Greater Strength and better personal control—not merely numerical proficiency—can shorten recovery 10.
- Mental strain: Sword Skills require concentration, and repeated use can cause mental exhaustion. Flying Sword's techniques are comparatively undemanding 9 10.
- Space and positioning: Extremely close combat can prevent either fighter from assuming the posture needed to activate a technique 12.
- Aerial exposure: Skills that lift players into the air can leave them vulnerable to large monsters, especially when their attributes and available techniques are still limited 14.
Documented Techniques
One-Handed Weapons and Rapiers
| Sword Skill | Weapon / Tree | Documented properties |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | General one-handed weapons | A fast lunging thrust. Compared with Rage Spike, it offers greater charge speed and distance but less damage. Its preparation can be cumbersome 7 9 13. |
| Slant | One-Handed Straight Sword | A diagonal slash covering a broad arc. Wang Shui combines it with a fall from a tree to land a critical hit that inflicts multiple debuffs on a kobold 8 12 13. |
| Horizontal | One-Handed Straight Sword | A horizontal slash used both offensively and to deflect opposing attacks. Kirito uses it to stop Wang Shui's opening Linear 12 13. |
| Vertical | One-handed sword | A downward attack with a high strength rating in Sword Skill clashes. Kirito uses its angle to counter an elite kobold's horizontal slash 14. |
| Rage Spike | Primarily One-Handed Straight Sword | A body-driven charging thrust. It deals more damage than Linear but has less speed and range 9 10. |
| Sonic Leap | One-handed sword | A difficult airborne charging attack requiring proficiency above 100. Kirito chains its landing into Rage Spike 13. |
| Quadruple Pain | Rapier | A rapid four-hit attack used by Asuna against the first-floor boss 22. |
Daggers and Short Swords
Dagger Sword Skills are characterized by fast attacks and very short recovery, making them particularly dangerous against small and medium-sized targets, especially humanoids 13.
| Sword Skill | Documented properties |
|---|---|
| Side Bite | A high-speed, two-hit attack. Li Harvey strikes Wang Shui's upper arm and chest, then recovers before him 13. |
| Armor Pierce | A heavy single-hit attack that can incorporate a lunge; any stabbing motion can serve as its opening. It deals agility-scaled damage and inflicts Armor Break (1), reducing overall defense by 10% 13 20. |
Throwing and Support Trees
| Sword Skill | Parent skill | Documented properties |
|---|---|---|
| Single Shot | Flying Sword | A projectile attack used to interrupt charging skills and enemy attacks. Wang Shui stops Kirito's Rage Spike by striking its sword tip with a pebble 13 14. |
| Full-Power Throw | Flying Sword | A single-hit throwing attack. Combined with specially commissioned beveled iron blocks, it turns an elite kobold's stagger into a loss of balance 14. |
| Phantom Slide | Hide | An evasive movement technique that leaves an afterimage. Its appearance, power, and speed differ markedly between Kirito and Li Harvey 13. |
| Backstep | Reaction Evasion | Accelerates the user backward out of an attack's range, though an advancing attack can continue pursuing them 17. |
- Flying Sword increases projectile range and damage, but spare ammunition must be equipped manually during combat 9.
- Pebbles provide readily available practice ammunition, although their damage is low. Wang Shui initially considers the skill's limited ammunition and growth potential poor choices for a normal skill slot 9 12.
Monster and Heavy-Weapon Techniques
| Sword Skill | Weapon / User | Documented properties |
|---|---|---|
| Gengetsu | Katana-wielding elite kobold | An advanced two-hit technique combining a horizontal slash with a rising follow-up. Mistaking the first strike for a complete attack leaves Kirito exposed 14. |
| Ukifune | Katana and nodachi users | Identified during the elite kobold fight and used in the first-floor boss's lethal combination with Hiougi 14 22. |
| Hiougi | Illfang the Kobold Lord | Part of the combination that kills Diabel. Wang Shui later interrupts another use, allowing Asuna to evade and counterattack 22. |
| Spinning Wheel | Great blades | An advanced 360-degree area attack. Illfang's version knocks surrounding players away and inflicts Stun and Intimidation 22. |
| Whirlwind | Two-handed weapons and polearms | A basic straight-line attack. Illfang's size allows it to threaten Kirito before his earlier-started attack lands 22. |
Counterplay and Team Combat
Interruptions and Clashes
- Sword Skills can cancel one another through a successful weapon clash. Kirito turns a committed thrust into a broader slash to meet and cancel Illfang's Whirlwind 22.
- Precise projectiles can interrupt attacks by striking the opposing blade, as Wang Shui demonstrates against both Kirito and the elite kobold 13 14.
- Attacking the user's body can also interrupt execution. Wang Shui stops Shino's follow-up technique with a kick to her attacking arm 18.
- Direct restraint is possible: Wang Shui braces against Shino's attacking wrist until the skill's glow and momentum fade, then locks her arm 18.
- Defensive success against one hit does not guarantee safety against a multi-hit technique, as Kirito discovers when Gengetsu's rising second strike catches him 14.
Switching and Crowd Control
- Switch means taking turns resisting enemy attacks. A teammate can cover recovery, take pressure off an injured player, or create a safe attacking opportunity 12 14.
- Crowd control creates severe openings. Stun causes genuine dizziness that gradually subsides, while knockdown requires physically getting back up 14.
- Enemy resistance affects control duration. Wang Shui's disabling strike holds the elite kobold for less than five seconds 14.
- Illfang's Spinning Wheel demonstrates the danger of grouping too closely: nearly everyone caught falls below half health while also receiving disabling effects 22.
Relationship to Swordsmanship
- Luke distinguishes intricate human-targeting techniques from Sword Skills: compact wrist movements can be difficult to develop into registered techniques and have limited power without corresponding bonuses 7.
- Wang Shui describes Kirito's Aincrad-Style Swordsmanship as movement and reflexes organized around creating opportunities to activate Sword Skills, rather than embedding elaborate sword techniques in every motion 12.
- Unconventional stances can conceal an attack's intent. Wang Shui finds that poses with little real-world practicality can still work in SAO if they allow a Sword Skill to activate 18.
Sword Skills Blade Bullet System
Charging and Effects
- Modified melee weapons receive a Blade Bullet Slot in the hilt, which accepts Blank Sword Skill Blade Bullets 27.
- Using Sword Skills feeds surplus energy into the loaded bullet. A glow indicates that charging is complete 27.
- Firing a charged bullet returns its energy to the weapon, producing enhancements or special effects 27:
- Normal attack damage enhancement
- Sharpness enhancement
- Body part destruction enhancement
- Slashing or piercing enhancement
- Blocking enhancement
- An additional explosive attribute
- A single-use midrange burst
- Charged bullets can be unloaded after combat and traded. Charge retention depends on quality; high-level bullets can remain charged for over a month without decay 27.
Rapid Charging
- Kayaba develops a cycle of firing a charged bullet, ejecting it immediately, loading a blank, and using Sword Skills while the weapon remains enhanced 27.
- He adds a hidden parameter that greatly increases charging speed during an active blade enhancement. This permits rapid repeated charging, including farming bullets with poor attributes 27.
Development and Later Adaptation
Wang Shui and Akihiko Kayaba introduce the system through The Extinguished Spark expansion. Information becomes publicly available from the fifth floor, while players on lower floors discover related techniques using the limited blade bullets available to them 27 28.
After SAO's branch storyline merges into the fantasy world, Wang Shui recreates a Blade Bullet System for his greatsword. His limited magical knowledge allows only a simple reproduction of its effects 36.
Notable Quote
“What we call Sword Skills are refined from simple attack movements. Ultimately, the movements remain the same.”
