History
Life at Winterfell
Ned grows up at Winterfell under the authority of his father, Rickard Stark, and trains under Ser Rodrik. When Lyanna returns with the injured white wolf who becomes known as Ghost, Ned is practicing with Benjen. Unlike his younger brother, he remains in the yard rather than abandon practice under Rodrik’s watch 14.
As a younger son, Ned is expected to participate in the Hundred-Person Hunt to prepare for service as a vassal and household knight. Rickard privately imagines that, under safer political circumstances, Ned could instead travel freely with a sword and become a hero celebrated by bards. Later, Ghost learns that Rickard intends to send Ned back to the Vale 15 16 21.
The Hundred-Person Hunt
Lyanna lends Ghost to Ned for the hunt, delighting him. Before the competition, he takes Ghost around the northern encampment and explains its houses, banners, hunting routes, and traditions. His enjoyment ends when Brandon reprimands him for spending time at the festivities rather than practicing archery or swordsmanship 16 17.
Ned begins suspecting that Ghost is more than an ordinary wolf after noticing her reactions to familiar house names and sigils. During the expedition, reports of a werewolf prompt him to ask whether she is a skinchanger controlling the white wolf 17 18.
Brandon’s party ventures toward Hoarfrost Hill despite its guide’s warnings and becomes trapped in dangerous weather. When wolves attack, Ned draws his sword and tells the others to watch Ghost’s reactions and form a defensive circle. He nevertheless reaches his physical and emotional limits during the fighting, while Ghost bears most of the burden of protecting the party 18 19.
Afterward, Ned objects to Brandon’s decision to ambush rival hunting parties instead of hunting game. He returns to Winterfell with Ghost, intending to report Brandon’s conduct to their father, and helps Lyanna care for the wounded wolf 19.
Discovering Ghost’s Human Form
When Ghost becomes feverish and refuses food, Ned secretly carries her to Winterfell’s underground hot spring, hoping a soak will help. Under the full moon, she transforms into a human girl. Ned rushes to fetch Lyanna, then brings clothing at his sister’s request 19 20.
Ghost identifies herself and asks them to call her Arya. Despite his embarrassment, Ned focuses on the practical problem of explaining her appearance and protecting her identity. He and Lyanna reject her suggestion that she leave, and Ned argues that no northern household other than House Stark could adequately protect her. The three approach Rickard for help 20.
Ned remains concerned after Rickard’s private conversation with Ghost, asking whether she still feels unwell. His attraction to her becomes increasingly apparent, although he struggles to speak naturally around her human form 20 21.
Riverrun and Petyr’s Duel
Ned accompanies his siblings to Riverrun for Brandon’s betrothal to Catelyn Tully. During the journey, he brings Ghost food and flowers. At the welcoming feast, he enthusiastically introduces himself to Brynden Tully, recognizing the Blackfish’s military reputation 24 25.
After Petyr Baelish challenges Brandon, Ned agrees that his brother is unlikely to show mercy. When Ghost asks for help saving Petyr, Ned suggests involving Robert Baratheon through Lyanna. The suggestion angers his sister, who deeply dislikes her betrothed, and Ned apologizes 27 28.
Lyanna eventually asks Robert to intervene. Through her and Ned’s efforts, Robert fights Brandon in Petyr’s place, preventing the expected fatal confrontation. Ned also advises Robert about his behavior toward Lyanna, helping improve her opinion of him slightly 29.
Ghost leaves Riverrun with Maester Weilisi before saying goodbye in person. Lyanna tells Ned that Ghost left a farewell letter only for her, visibly crushing him. She privately regards his attachment as a first love with no future 29.
Appearance
- Youthful and good-looking: Ghost describes teenage Ned as fresh-faced, innocent, and high-spirited, unlike the grim, careworn adult she remembers from the original story 17.
- Easily flustered around Arya: After discovering Ghost’s human form, he blushes intensely, avoids her gaze, and becomes acutely conscious of physical contact with her 20 21.
Personality
Ned appears quiet and composed in company but becomes remarkably talkative in private. While touring the hunt camp with Ghost, he eagerly shares northern history, household gossip, and his confidence that House Stark will win. He is also observant: rather than dismiss Ghost’s intelligence, he watches her reactions and develops a specific theory about her nature 17 18.
He is affectionate and attentive toward Ghost, rescuing her from Benjen’s awkward handling, preparing food for her, and defending her when Brandon criticizes her usefulness. His sense of fair conduct makes him angry at Brandon’s plan to turn the hunt into attacks on competitors 17 18 19.
Ned’s judgment of Robert is more forgiving than Lyanna’s. He considers Robert a suitable match in status, bloodline, wealth, and martial ability, and initially hopes marriage will curb his drinking and womanizing. Even so, he apologizes when his proposal upsets Lyanna and later speaks to Robert about behaving better toward her 28 29.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Training
- Trains in swordsmanship under Ser Rodrik; Brandon also presses him to improve his riding and archery 14 17.
- Carries and draws his own sword during the wolf attack 19.
- Remains inexperienced in real danger: Ghost observes that fear weakens his legs, and he nearly collapses before the battle ends 19.
Northern Knowledge and Observation
- Knows the Hundred-Person Hunt’s rules, routes, and participating houses in detail 17.
- Recognizes northern heraldry and recounts stories about individual houses 17.
- Notices Ghost looking toward particular banners when their houses are named, leading him to question whether she is truly an ordinary wolf 17 18.
Crisis Judgment and Mediation
- Recognizes Ghost’s ability to anticipate wolf attacks and directs the hunters to use her reactions while maintaining a defensive circle 19.
- Identifies the difficulties of concealing Arya’s identity and rejects a false distant-relative explanation because her appearance would expose it 20.
- Proposes Robert’s involvement as a way around Brandon’s refusal to abandon the duel with Petyr 28 29.
Cooking and Food Preparation
- Offers to make Ghost honey-roasted meat, saying he is good at preparing it 16.
- Tears dried meat into manageable strips for her during the hunting expedition 18.
- Brings her treats including pears poached in red wine, raspberry preserve cake, and hazelnut almond biscuits 28.
Relationships
- Rickard Stark — Father. Oversees Ned’s future and plans to send him back to the Vale; Ned and Lyanna seek his protection for Arya 20 21.
- Lyarra Stark — Mother and lady of Winterfell 14.
- Brandon Stark — Elder brother. Ned respects his exceptional swordsmanship but is subdued by his criticism and openly objects to his conduct during the hunt 17 19 27.
- Lyanna Stark — Sister and confidante. They jointly protect Ghost’s secret and help avert Petyr’s expected death; Lyanna also notices and teases Ned about his feelings for Ghost 20 21 28 29.
- Benjen Stark — Younger brother and fellow trainee. Ned urges him not to abandon practice and intervenes when his enthusiastic handling makes Ghost uncomfortable 14 17.
- Ghost / Arya — Beloved wolf companion and later first love. Ned’s attachment predates discovering her human form, then develops into obvious attraction; no reciprocal romance is established in the supplied events 16 19 20 29.
- Robert Baratheon — Sworn brother and prospective brother-in-law. Ned supports his match with Lyanna but advises him to improve his behavior toward her 28 29.
- Ser Rodrik — Martial instructor whose supervision Ned takes seriously 14.
- Petyr Baelish — Recipient of Ned and Lyanna’s intervention in the duel. Unknown to Ned, Ghost associates Petyr with his death in the original story 27 29.
Future Known to Ghost
- Ghost remembers an original future in which Ned bears responsibility for House Stark and the North before dying in King’s Landing 17.
- She attributes his eventual beheading and the deaths of his trusted guards to Littlefinger’s deception, making her hesitate over whether to save the young Petyr 27.
- She also questions whether removing Littlefinger would actually save Ned, since other court schemers could still threaten him as Hand of the King. These are Ghost’s expectations, not events that have occurred in the novel’s present 27.
