History
Rescuing Ghost
Angered by Robert Baratheon’s letter celebrating their betrothal while openly acknowledging his other affairs, Lyanna stopped speaking to her father and slipped away from Winterfell with Layson Karstark. During their camping trip, she intended to hunt snow ferrets for pelts to make boots for Ned and Benjen 13 14.
After hearing a child call for help, Lyanna rushed into the forest and found the badly wounded Ghost. She insisted that she had briefly seen a girl transform into the white wolf. Despite Layson’s fear that the creature was dangerous, Lyanna brought Ghost back for treatment 13.
At Winterfell, she summoned Maester Luwin and questioned him about skinchangers and animals capable of becoming human. Luwin dismissed the latter idea as a fanciful tale and recommended eventually releasing the wolf. Rickard nevertheless allowed Lyanna to keep Ghost, with the steward’s assistance 14.
Life at Winterfell
Lyanna patiently approached the injured wolf, gained her trust, and discovered her preference for cooked food. Once Ghost recovered, she moved into Lyanna’s bedchamber and became her constant companion. Lyanna chose the name Ghost after reading a passage about the Children of the Forest’s belief that all things possessed spirits; the wolf enthusiastically accepted it 15 16.
The pair explored Winterfell’s towers and hunted near the Wolfswood. Ghost helped Lyanna catch more and larger game, which she distributed throughout the household. Although excluded from competing in the Hundred-Person Hunt, Lyanna lent Ghost to Ned—partly because she thought her increasingly pampered companion needed exercise 16.
When Ghost returned after defending Ned and Brandon from wolves, Lyanna worried about both her injuries and the distress she might feel at fighting her own kind. Later, when Ghost became feverish and restless, Lyanna urgently sought help and rejected Olf’s suggestion of letting her into the wilderness to find a mate 19.
Discovering Ghost’s Human Form
Ned brought Lyanna to Winterfell’s underground hot springs after Ghost transformed into a blond girl. Rather than reacting with fear, Lyanna was delighted that her original observation had been correct. She supplied clothes and eagerly questioned Ghost about her nature 20.
When Ghost suggested leaving, Lyanna and Ned both refused. They brought her—now asking to be called Arya—to Rickard for protection. Before leaving the two alone, Lyanna asked her father not to make things difficult for Ghost 20.
Ghost concealed her agreement to serve Rickard, instead telling Lyanna that she intended to search for her origins after accompanying the Starks to Riverrun. Lyanna supported that explanation and provided clothes and jewelry while Ghost remained unable to resume wolf form 21 22.
Riverrun and Petyr’s Duel
During the journey south, three septas supervised Lyanna’s neglected studies in noble etiquette and the relationships between Westerosi houses. At Riverrun, she was further disappointed in Robert when she learned that he had arrived two days earlier but was still asleep after drinking rather than welcoming her or Ned 23 25.
After Petyr Baelish challenged Brandon to a duel, Lyanna admired his courage but feared Brandon would kill him. She helped Ghost and Ned consider ways to intervene, though she initially objected strongly to a plan involving Robert 27 28.
Ghost departed without saying goodbye in person, leaving Lyanna a letter. Wanting to help her friend, Lyanna endured her dislike of Robert and asked him to intervene. He readily agreed and fought Brandon in Petyr’s place. Petyr survived, though injured, and was subsequently sent home 29.
Before leaving, Petyr secretly gave Lyanna a bronze family badge bearing a giant’s face. She forwarded it to Ghost with news of the duel, hoping the connection might someday help her. Robert’s cooperation and improved conduct also softened Lyanna’s opinion of him slightly 29.
Role in Ghost’s Plans
Lyanna’s rescue and friendship make her one of the principal people Ghost hopes to protect. Based on her knowledge of the original story, Ghost expects Lyanna to meet Rhaegar at the Tourney at Harrenhal and later die in childbirth at the Tower of Joy. These are anticipated events, not events shown happening to this Lyanna 16 21.
Preventing Lyanna and Rhaegar from meeting becomes a central reason for Ghost’s journey to King’s Landing. Even after growing attracted to Rhaegar, Ghost continues to connect her own choices with Lyanna’s survival and the possibility of averting the Stark family’s wider tragedy 21 36 50.
Appearance
- Build: Taller than most girls her age, with long, straight legs and a developing, graceful figure 15.
- Hair: Long brown hair, described as tawny or dark brown, with distinctive natural burgundy strands 13 15.
- Eyes: Gray-blue, repeatedly compared to clear northern ice or lake water 13 15.
- Face: House Stark’s long, pointed face, a small high-bridged nose, pale pink lips, and spirited features 13 15.
- Distinguishing styling: Deliberately draws her thick eyebrows heavily; wears practical hunting clothes when visiting Ghost in the stables 13 15.
Personality
Lyanna is energetic, headstrong, and sometimes reckless. She rushes toward a child’s cry before her companion can stop her and refuses to abandon the wounded wolf despite his objections. Her compassion also extends to Petyr, whose likely death concerns her even though she barely knows him 13 27 28.
She wants passionate, devoted love and resents being expected to accept Robert’s womanizing as a minor flaw. Her resistance to the marriage is not simply dislike of duty: she specifically objects to his affairs, drinking, and failure to show consideration for his betrothed 13 15 25 28.
With those she loves, Lyanna is affectionate, playful, and protective. She fusses over Ghost’s food and cleanliness, teases Ned about his feelings, and shares long private conversations with her friend. Her willingness to approach Robert for Ghost’s sake shows that loyalty can outweigh her personal resentment 16 22 28 29.
She is also fascinated by legends and the supernatural. As a child, she pestered Luwin for stories of heroic kings; later, she greets Ghost’s claim of possible foresight with excitement rather than disbelief 14 28.
