The man with no memory / The unidentified assassin (part one)
Becoming a Saint from the age of myth
Author: Huisu
Synopsis:
(New book, "The Sword Cultivator's Path Beginning with the Tide of Demons," is out. Please take a look.)
When he opened his eyes again, he discovered that he had left modern society behind and arrived in an age of myth, a world belonging to the Saints.
Strangely, however, he discovered gaps in his memory. He had forgotten everything about himself, including his name.
Yet he remembered everything about the Saints.
He resolved to join Sanctuary, search for his past, and explore the root of it all.
But when he truly became involved, he discovered to his horror that more and more unknown enemies were appearing, making this Holy War increasingly complicated and difficult.
"Is this really still the 'Lost Canvas' I know?" he questioned.
Chapter 1: The man with no memory
Like a candle suddenly flaring in the darkness, a hazy consciousness abruptly awoke, involuntarily letting out a soft groan.
"Mm-"
Then his tightly shut eyes instinctively opened, and a pale ceiling came into view. A young man lying on a stone bed had awakened.
"What... happened... to me?"
Holding his groggy head, he slowly sat up.
"You're finally awake?"
An elderly voice came from his right.
He looked toward the voice. An old man wearing a white robe and a green scarf, with red, dot-shaped eyebrows, appeared in his field of vision. Beside him stood a tall young woman with the same red, dot-shaped eyebrows.
"You're... Sage?"
"No, you're not Sage. You're Hakurei?"
After a little thought, his muddled consciousness gradually cleared, and he reached a more accurate conclusion.
"And you're Crane Yuzuriha!" He looked at the woman beside the old man and identified her as well.
Yet as his awareness grew clearer, his expression suddenly changed.
"No... that's not right..."
"My voice..."
"Why can I speak this language?" He was terrified.
The language he was speaking now was not his familiar native tongue, but another, stranger language.
More frighteningly, he could not only speak this strange language, but understand it completely, as though it had been engraved into his soul, something he had been born knowing.
Meanwhile, the old man whose identity had abruptly been exposed was also startled. After that brief surprise, however, he laughed heartily. "I rarely receive visitors here. Even in Sanctuary, few people truly know me."
"I'm curious, young man. Why do you recognize me?"
As he spoke, he folded his arms and began scrutinizing the young man before him.
Beside him, Yuzuriha seemed to share an unspoken understanding with him. She quietly took two steps and blocked the room's only exit.
Seeing this, the young man immediately understood that unless he explained himself properly, this would probably not end well.
He thought for a moment, climbed out of bed, and first bowed respectfully to the old man before slowly speaking. "Lord Sage was the previous Cancer Gold Saint and is now Sanctuary's Pope. Barring exceptional circumstances, he wouldn't readily leave Sanctuary."
"Especially at a time like this!"
He stole a glance at Crane Yuzuriha, who was blocking the door.
Judging by her age, this was the era of the Lost Canvas, and war between the Underworld and Sanctuary was about to break out.
"So you, my lord, can only be Pope Sage's twin elder brother, Lord Hakurei, the previous Altar Saint!" he added.
"So that's how you distinguished me from that old fellow Sage!"
Hakurei nodded, but his expression abruptly changed, becoming even more serious. "However, you still haven't answered the most important question!"
"Why do you recognize us?"
"I sense no fluctuations of Cosmo from you. You don't seem to be from Sanctuary!"
"As someone from outside Sanctuary, you shouldn't know these things!"
Sanctuary seldom communicated with the outside world. Even within Sanctuary, few knew these things, let alone outsiders.
"Who exactly are you?" the old man demanded sternly. A terrifying aura burst from him, pressing straight toward the young man.
In an instant, he felt as though an invisible hand were pressing down on him. Even the air seemed to have been compressed, making it difficult to breathe.
At the same time, faced with the old man's questioning, he instinctively prepared to answer.
"I'm..."
As he instinctively thought, fragments of memory stirred, rising from the depths of his sea of memories and unfolding vividly before his eyes.
Yet something strange happened.
He searched through all his memories, but there was simply no information about his own origins.
"Sorry... there seems to be something wrong... with my memory..."
"I... don't know... who I am either..." Under the oppressive weight of the old man's aura, he answered with difficulty, bitterness filling his heart.
He only knew that he came from another world and had inexplicably appeared in this world that had originally existed only in a story.
He must have transmigrated.
He clearly remembered everything about this world, yet had forgotten only who he was.
Faced with such an extraordinary experience, he could not feel the slightest happiness.
"Huh?"
Hearing this answer, Hakurei was somewhat taken aback.
After a moment's hesitation, he withdrew his oppressive aura.
Judging by his heartbeat, breathing, and various microexpressions, he felt that the young man before him did not seem to be lying.
Especially since he was only an ordinary person, it was almost impossible for him to deceive the keen senses of a Saint of Hakurei's strength.
However, that did not mean he would set his doubts aside.
After all, the appearance of such a strange person at a time like this was enough to put him on guard.
"His body still looks very weak. You'll look after him for the time being!" After giving his disciple Yuzuriha this instruction, Hakurei left the room.
"Phew-"
Free of the old man's pressure, the young man breathed a small sigh of relief.
In that brief span, his back had already become soaked.
But he also knew perfectly well that he was only temporarily out of danger. The so-called care Hakurei had arranged was, in essence, surveillance.
Any strange action on his part would bring unpredictable consequences.
"What's your name? Surely you haven't forgotten even that?" Crane Yuzuriha walked over and asked, making no attempt to conceal her suspicion.
"I'm very sorry!"
He gave a bitter smile and sighed. "I don't remember a single bit of anything about myself."
"Including my name!"
"You even forgot your name?"
Yuzuriha gave him a dubious look and raised an eyebrow. "Then what should we call you? We can't just call you 'hey, you'!"
"Well..."
He found this something of a headache too.
Although a name was only a label, it was still necessary, a marker of a person's identity.
He had to give himself a new name.
"Wuxin. From today onward, my name is Wuxin!" After a brief moment of thought, he gave his answer.
"Wuxin? As in seeking your original heart and exploring your true self?" Yuzuriha's expression eased a little.
Judging by the name's literal meaning, Wuxin really had forgotten himself and was not deliberately lying.
"Yes!"
Wuxin did not deny it.
Moreover, as he settled on this new name, he also set himself a new goal.
He would search for his lost memories and investigate the mystery of his transmigration.
He had a strong premonition that the two were probably not entirely unrelated.
For now, however, his most pressing task was to win Hakurei and Yuzuriha's trust. Otherwise, he would find it impossible to take a single step here.
Fortunately, both came from Sanctuary and had their own principles, so they would not readily act recklessly. Had he fallen into the hands of Hades' Army, he feared his life would already be worse than death.
Chapter 2: The unidentified assassin (part one)
At the thought of Hades' Army, an idea stirred in Wuxin's mind, and he immediately spoke. "I've heard that Saints possess a supernatural power called Cosmo, allowing them to tear apart the sky and earth with their fists and perform all manner of incredible feats."
"I wonder whether I might have the honor of joining you, becoming a member of Sanctuary, and fighting to protect peace on earth?"
Fighting for this so-called peace on earth was, of course, only an excuse. Having only just arrived, he did not yet possess such profound conviction. His pursuit of supernatural power, however, was utterly sincere.
In his original world, supernatural power existed only in people's imaginations. Here, however, supernatural power had become real.
No one could resist the temptation of turning fantasy into reality.
At the same time, mastering the power of Cosmo would give him a little more strength to protect himself in this war-torn world.
