Becoming a Saint from the Age of Myth
"It's over!"
Wuxin smiled faintly and directed all three streams of Sekishiki to attack at once.
"Oh no!"
Frantic, Tenma leaped into the air.
But he could dodge for a moment, not forever.
Wuxin hurriedly redirected the Sekishiki, continuing the pursuit into the air.
Already airborne, Tenma had nowhere to dodge. The three streams of Sekishiki struck him immediately, piercing his chest.
His vision seemed to blur, and then he saw his own consciousness wrapped in three silver currents and dragged out of his body.
He struggled with all his might, but it was useless. He could not break free of the Sekishiki's restraints at all.
"Tenma lost!"
Everyone in the stands sighed in unison.
The effects of Sekishiki were far too unusual. Once someone's soul was stripped away, there was almost no room left to resist.
"No-"
"I can still fight!"
Unwilling to admit defeat just like that, Tenma struggled even harder.
"Huh?"
Feeling the powerful force coming from the other end of the Sekishiki, Wuxin was startled.
Tenma's soul power was gradually rising, growing stronger and stronger, and his ability to resist rose with it. Before Wuxin's eyes, he broke free of the Sekishiki's restraints.
Chapter 34: Arena bout (part three)
"Seriously?"
At that moment, seeing Tenma break free of the Sekishiki's restraints, both Wuxin and the many spectators in the stands were dumbfounded.
Everyone knew that Sekishiki was a move specifically targeting the soul.
Generally speaking, when used against someone of the same level, escape was almost impossible.
Even a stronger opponent would find it extremely difficult to break free once Sekishiki ensnared their soul.
Yet Tenma's own strength was considerably below Wuxin's.
Logically, there should have been no way for him to break free of the Sekishiki's restraints under these circumstances.
However, Wuxin and the others soon recalled that this Tenma had a legend of godslaying behind him. He was no ordinary person.
To put it in more xuanhuan terms, Tenma was born with a lofty destiny, a son of fortune for whom fighting above his level and turning misfortune into good fortune were everyday occurrences.
It was not impossible for him to break free of the Sekishiki's restraints.
What bothered Wuxin somewhat was that he had become the opponent someone else fought above their level to challenge.
"That's just completely unreasonable!" he complained helplessly.
Once free of the restraints, Tenma's soul immediately returned to his body, and he attacked Wuxin once more.
"I haven't lost yet. Please take another move from me!"
"Pegasus Ryusei Ken!"
He roared and threw a punch, and countless gleaming silver fist lights manifested, pouring toward Wuxin like a dense rainstorm.
Compared with the previous attack, this rainstorm was noticeably fiercer.
Rumble!
The silver meteor shower fell, instantly blanketing Wuxin's position and leaving deep craters the size of washbasins in the ground.
However, Wuxin was prepared this time. Coupled with the fact that Tenma's move had no further variations, he evaded the attack with ease.
Considering how difficult it was for Sekishiki to restrain his opponent, he did not rashly use the move again. Instead, he accelerated and closed in.
In fact, he still had stronger finishing moves such as Kisoen and Soul Burial Wave at his disposal.
But those moves were too lethal, making them unsuitable for a sparring match.
Left with no choice, he could only wear Tenma down in close combat and look for another opportunity.
"Just what I wanted!"
After missing his attack and seeing Wuxin take the initiative to close in, Tenma did not retreat. Instead, he grew bolder as the fight went on and met him head-on.
Thud, thud, thud!
Amid the sounds of colliding flesh, the two launched into a fierce close-quarters exchange.
A punch from one, a kick from the other-the two fought neck and neck.
Ultimately, however, Wuxin had a slight edge and slowly began to suppress Tenma.
Although he had only truly begun training half a year ago, far less than a young man like Tenma, who had been brought to Sanctuary to train at a very young age, for some reason his talent for combat was exceptional, and he was already highly proficient in using all kinds of fighting techniques.
All he lacked was some actual combat experience.
Fighting Tenma seemed to further unlock his potential and talent, making him increasingly adept at applying his fighting techniques.
After a hundred and twenty-three exchanges, Wuxin caught an opening in Tenma's defense.
Thud!
He unleashed a punch that struck Tenma squarely in the right side of his chest, sending him flying once again.
"That should do it!"
"Sekishiki Meikai Ha!"
He unleashed his finishing move once more. Three silver currents flew from his fingertips and rushed toward Tenma.
By now, their close-quarters battle had drained a great deal of Tenma's energy, so his resistance to the Sekishiki's restraints would certainly be considerably weaker.
"Again?"
Noticing the Sekishiki sweeping toward him, Tenma was deeply troubled too.
He knew full well that he would probably have a hard time breaking free this time.
But he still did not give up, quickly rising to dodge.
Unfortunately, he had expended too much energy in close combat, and his speed was considerably slower than before. He had barely run any distance before the three streams of Sekishiki caught up and pierced his chest.
Immediately afterward, Tenma's translucent soul was also dragged out of his body by the Sekishiki.
"I haven't lost yet!"
"I still have a chance!"
Tenma struggled desperately once again, but this time his struggles were much weaker.
Nor did he repeat his earlier miracle. After struggling for quite some time, he completely ran out of strength and could only remain tightly ensnared by Wuxin's Sekishiki.
"Looks like I won!"
With the outcome decided, Wuxin immediately released the restraints, letting Tenma's soul return to his body.
"This new Saint Candidate is strong!"
The many Saints in the stands nodded silently.
The full-fledged Saints were fine, but the Saint Candidates did not look so pleased.
The appearance of a powerful competitor meant their chances of obtaining a Cloth would be greatly reduced.
Wuxin's Underworld Wave in particular was almost impossible to guard against. Once it hit, the outcome was practically decided. It was truly terrifying.
They then left the stands with heavy hearts.
In the arena, Tenma said excitedly to Wuxin, "I never expected you to know how to use Sekishiki too. Are you Lord Cancer Manigoldo's disciple?"
"No!"
Wuxin shook his head and said, "Manigoldo is my senior brother. My teacher is Lord Altar Hakurei, Pope Sage's elder twin brother!"
"The Pope has an elder twin brother?" Tenma was astonished.
Despite having been in Sanctuary for so long, this was the first time he had heard of it.
Wuxin explained with a smile, "My teacher lives in seclusion in Jamir year-round rather than in Sanctuary, so very few people know about him."
"So that's why!" Tenma understood.
"By the way, how have things been in Sanctuary lately?" Wuxin asked, changing the subject.
"Not very good!"
Tenma shook his head and led Wuxin out of the arena, saying gravely, "With Hades's revival, the Specters have been gradually awakening too. Some have even infiltrated Sanctuary and attacked it."
"Although they haven't broken through the defenses of the Twelve Golden Temples yet, quite a few Apprentice Saints below the Sacred Mountain have already died at the Specters' hands."
"There have even been casualties among the Bronze Saints."
"It looks like the situation really doesn't give us much reason for optimism!" Wuxin sighed as well.
Time was growing increasingly short. He had to obtain a Cloth of his own as soon as possible.
He chatted with Tenma for quite a while longer. Only when they saw it was getting late did the two say goodbye and part ways.
After dinner, Wuxin found an unoccupied stone hut, spread out a pile of dry grass, and lay down on it.
Conditions in Sanctuary were rather austere, so he could only bear with them.
Fortunately, he had already awakened his Sixth Sense and mastered the power of Cosmo. He no longer feared heat or cold, so there was nothing wrong with sleeping in somewhat crude conditions.
This was also why he had not fallen ill while training in a desolate place like Jamir.
Meanwhile, after returning to Sanctuary, Cancer Manigoldo soon reported the situation concerning The Defiler to his superiors.
Unfortunately, the other party had deliberately concealed information, leaving them knowing very little. Even after consulting a large amount of material, they still could not deduce the other party's identity or the presence hidden behind the scenes.
Left with no choice, Sanctuary's higher-ups could only set the matter aside for the time being.
