Background / History
Four Hundred Years of Guard Duty
Flugel gave Shaula her name and left her to guard the Pleiades Watchtower. She watched the surrounding sand sea every day for four hundred years, attacking approaching travelers under his orders. During that time, she never left the tower, while her name became famous outside it as that of the legendary “Sage” 34 35.
Shaula knew both Reid Astrea and Volcanica before their separation. She remained unaware that Reid had died of old age until Subaru’s companions told her. Although distressed by the news, she retained bitter memories of his treatment of her 34 36.
Meeting Subaru
Shaula’s defensive fire killed Subaru twice during his attempts to cross the dunes. Later, she saved him and his companions underground by annihilating a regenerating witchbeast with white beams. Emilia identified the rescuer as Shaula while watching the Sky Curtain 24 35.
Upon meeting Subaru, Shaula immediately embraced him and identified him as her master, the Great Sage Flugel. Subaru did not recognize her and could not reconcile himself with that identity. At his instruction, she abandoned her enforced silence toward the other visitors and began answering their questions 34.
The Library Trials
Shaula explained that the Watchtower was originally the Pleiades Great Library and welcomed Subaru’s arrival as her master’s return. She agreed not to harm him or his companions, but later revealed that the tower’s restrictions could override that promise 35 38.
She could not help identify the supposed hero she had killed in Taygeta’s trial. Subaru eventually established that the question referred to the scorpion of the Orion legend rather than Shaula herself. On reaching the second-floor trial, Shaula became terrified of Reid Astrea and fainted before participating in any fight 36 40.
Afterward, Shaula offered little useful information about Reid’s weaknesses and suggested that Subaru simply remain in the tower with her. When Subaru lost his memories, she continued treating him as her master and insisted that he had not changed 42 44 45.
Subaru’s Recollection
Before the tower scenes were replayed, Subaru remembered Shaula’s unconditional trust, her declaration of love, and her dissolution into starlight because of a contract. Despite his regret over other unfulfilled promises, he remained convinced that he would keep their promise to meet again 1.
Appearance
- Hair: Long black hair tied into a high ponytail, which she insists is a “scorpion tail” 35 40 41.
- Eyes: Green irises containing several tiny points of red light 35.
- Build: Curvaceous, with long legs, long eyelashes, and well-proportioned features 34 41.
- Clothing: A black bikini and hot pants 44.
Personality
Shaula is exuberant, flirtatious, and physically affectionate toward Subaru. She clings to him, seeks praise and head pats, and interprets even his scolding as affection. Her revealing appearance contrasts with a childish, puppy-like eagerness for attention; her sulks can disappear within seconds 34 36 42 44.
Her devotion is absolute but carries dangerous assumptions. She believes her master cannot die, treats herself proudly as his “tool,” and shows no guilt over killing intruders on his orders. Her willingness to obey does not make her a dependable ally: she withholds important information, and the tower’s rules take precedence over her personal promises 35 38 39.
Loneliness underlies her cheerful behavior. She fears her master disappearing again and is willing to wait days, years, or further centuries while Subaru completes the trials. She would prefer him to stay with her rather than leave the tower 34 42.
Abilities & Skills
Hell’s Snipe
Shaula fires lethal white beams to eliminate targets approaching the Watchtower 35.
- Killed Subaru twice during his journeys through the dunes 35.
- Destroyed the regenerating underground witchbeast that threatened Subaru’s group 24 35.
- Used the attack throughout her long watch; she says she stopped counting her victims after one hundred 36.
Superhuman Strength
Shaula possesses strength far beyond her slender appearance 34 35.
- Carried a dragon carriage and a ground dragon to the tower’s lowest floor 35.
- Carries Meili effortlessly, including while climbing stairs 35 39.
- Holds Subaru so firmly that he cannot pry himself free; her frightened embraces cause him pain 34 40 41.
Longevity
- Remains youthful after at least four hundred years of guard duty 35.
- Explicitly denies being a spirit when Subaru asks whether she resembles Beatrice 38.
Rule Enforcement
Shaula can sense when the tower’s conditions are broken. She states that neither she nor the challengers can deceive this enforcement mechanism 39.
- A violation turns her into what she calls a “heartless killing machine,” compelled to attack the challengers 38 45.
- This obligation overrides her promise not to harm Subaru’s party 38.
- Her personal affection does not exempt Subaru from the restrictions 42.
Limitations
- Illiteracy: Cannot read and therefore cannot assist with searching Taygeta’s books 45.
- Poor recall: Cannot supply a useful answer about the “hero destroyed by Shaula,” though her memories of Reid’s bullying remain vivid 36.
- Fear of Reid: His appearance causes panic and fainting despite her formidable combat abilities 40 41.
- Restricted knowledge: Initially says she has never been above the fourth floor and cannot direct the party to the second-floor stairs 38.
Tower Restrictions
Shaula discloses four rules after Anastasia deduces that she is concealing internal conditions 38.
| Rule | Restriction |
|---|---|
| 1 | Challengers must not leave before completing the trials. Reaching the first floor, Maia, allows them to leave 38. |
| 2 | Breaking the trials’ rules is forbidden 38. |
| 3 | Disrespecting the library is forbidden 38. |
| 4 | Destroying the tower is forbidden 38. |
| Suspected fifth rule | Shaula pauses before denying that another rule exists. Vincent and Otto interpret this as deliberate concealment; its content is not revealed in the supplied scenes 38 39. |
- Merope: Shaula confirms the existence of floor zero, completed after her master’s departure, but forbids Subaru from accessing it because the necessary conditions have not been met 35.
- Earlier orders: Her master instructed her to ignore questions or kill the questioner. Subaru’s permission allows her to begin speaking openly with his companions 34.
Relationships
- Flugel — Master and namesake-giver. Shaula regards him as the only person worthy of the title “Sage” and dedicates four centuries to awaiting his return 34 35.
- Natsuki Subaru — Identifies him as Flugel and directs her love and loyalty toward him. Subaru is troubled by the identification but recognizes that she saved him; he later promises to meet her again 1 34 35 36.
- Meili — Friendly companion whom Shaula carries and plays with. Meili says being beside her feels calming and later lets the unconscious Shaula rest on her lap 35 39 41.
- Reid Astrea — An old acquaintance whom she remembers as a bully. She calls him “scum,” fears him intensely, and knows no weakness she could have used for revenge 36 40 42.
- Volcanica — An old acquaintance she calls a cynic. On learning of Reid’s death, she remarks that Volcanica deserved to die first 34.
- Emilia — Sympathizes with Shaula’s long wait and believes that learning Subaru is not her master need not make Shaula their enemy 35 36.
- Beatrice — Shaula calls her “little one number one,” with Meili designated number two. Beatrice recognizes no malice in the nickname but warns Subaru about relying on Shaula’s mistaken identification 35 39.
Notable Quotes
“Let me say it again. Welcome back, Master.—I, Shaula, have long awaited the return of Flugel the ‘wise man’ with all my heart.” 35
“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, as long as you complete the ‘trials.’ I’ll stay here and watch—days, years, even another few hundred years would be fine.” 42
Trivia
- Subaru explains that Shaula is the name of a star in his homeland and means a scorpion’s “stinger.” This connection helps him solve Taygeta’s Orion riddle 36.
- Despite her worldwide reputation as the Sage, Shaula does not understand why the title became attached to her. The Sage depicted on the silver coin is a man she identifies as her master 34.
- She claims that her mother chose her appearance, without providing further details about her in these scenes 36.
