Background / History
Gluttony and the Pleiades Watchtower
The Authority of Gluttony stole Rem’s name, erasing other people’s memories of her. Subaru remained the only person who remembered her, leaving Ram and the others dependent on his accounts of their relationships with her 20 44.
The Sky Curtain shows Rem’s earlier condition at the Pleiades Watchtower: unconscious, breathing faintly, and resting on a flower-covered grass bed in the green room. Although the room’s spirit heals injuries and illnesses, it cannot awaken her. Finding answers to her condition is one of Subaru and Ram’s reasons for challenging the tower 35.
Subaru regularly visits the sleeping Rem and confides in her. Ram also watches over her, treating the tower’s trials as obstacles to recovering her younger sister 35 41 42.
Awakening and Life in Guaral
After awakening without her memories, Rem finds herself in Subaru’s arms in an unfamiliar place. His overwhelming miasma makes him seem repulsive and untrustworthy to her. She flees him, later encounters him again, is captured by the imperial army, and is rescued amid smoke and flames before reaching Guaral 12 14.
Subaru and Rem pose as husband and wife when entering Guaral, where they become acquainted with Flop and his sister. This cover identity accounts for Flop addressing Rem as Subaru’s wife 16.
While staying with Priscilla, Rem struggles to establish an identity independent of her missing past. She comes to believe Subaru is not deliberately deceiving her, but cannot readily accept his account of their relationship. By the time she reaches the imperial capital, she has accepted “Rem” as her name 12 18.
The Battle of Guaral
During the flying dragon attack, Rem treats injured residents in a mansion functioning as a field hospital. Priscilla, Kuna, and Holly insist that protecting her is essential because her healing can keep others alive. Rem resolves to stop undervaluing herself and concentrate on that responsibility 14.
Rem discovers an injured, horned girl in the courtyard and attempts to help her. The girl lashes out while disoriented, and Flop pushes Rem aside to take the attack himself. Rem then confronts the attacker and insists on treating his near-fatal wounds with healing magic 16.
The attacker identifies herself as Madelyn Eschart, the Empire’s First General. Recognizing Madelyn’s need to keep Flop alive, Rem uses her position as his healer to negotiate despite being seized by the throat. Subaru’s example of confronting stronger opponents helps her resist intimidation. Madelyn accepts the terms, and Rem’s intervention is credited with saving Guaral at its moment of crisis 16 20.
Captivity and the Sky Curtain
Rem is subsequently held in a guarded manor in the imperial capital. Berstetz describes her as valuable both as a healer and as an oni, expressing interest in bringing her to his side. Despite assurances of comfortable treatment, she remains a prisoner, with guards outside and a window she cannot open 18 42.
Watching the Sky Curtain exposes Rem to Subaru’s repeated deaths and to bonds she cannot remember. His suffering causes physical distress and unexplained tears. After watching him protect Ram, she wonders whether the foul presence she sensed around him might reflect accumulated suffering rather than merely a repulsive smell 4 24.
By the time the Curtain shows Subaru’s amnesia, Rem understands that Ram is her elder sister and acknowledges Subaru as trustworthy and dependable. Nevertheless, seeing his companions question his reliability makes her fear that Ram might likewise distrust her because of her own memory loss. She remains amnesiac through these events 44 47.
Appearance
- Hair: Bright blue 44.
- Eyes: Pale blue 42.
- Family resemblance: Looks almost identical to Ram, her elder twin sister 2 20.
- While unconscious: Retains rosy, pink-tinged cheeks, with faint breathing indicating that she is alive 35.
- Mobility aid: Uses a crutch during the events in Guaral 16.
Personality
Without her memories, Rem approaches her own identity as something she must discover rather than simply accept from others. She retains general knowledge learned before her amnesia, but lacks the personal experiences that would explain her relationships. This leaves her caught between wanting Subaru’s help understanding herself and feeling unable to face him until she knows who she is 12 18.
Rem is compassionate enough to approach an injured stranger without first recognizing the danger, yet forceful when a patient’s life is threatened. During Flop’s treatment, she challenges Madelyn despite exhaustion and overwhelming fear. Her resolve grows from rejecting self-pity and choosing to save as many people as possible 14 16.
Her concern for Subaru often emerges through complaints about how troublesome he is. As she learns more about him, suspicion gives way to respect, though she remains uncomfortable with dependence and worries that relying on someone else would burden them 12 44.
Abilities & Skills
Healing Magic
Rem can use healing magic to treat severe injuries. Its scarcity in the Vollachian Empire makes her valuable, but also places her at risk of becoming a target 10 18.
- Treats casualties during the flying dragon attack, reserving magic for patients who cannot otherwise be saved 14 16.
- Undertakes treatment of Flop’s near-fatal claw wounds after ordinary care proves insufficient 16.
- Suffers substantial mana expenditure and exhaustion after treating multiple critically injured people 16.
- Draws on Priscilla’s advice to look beyond wounds and consider the life within the patient 16.
Miasma Detection
Rem can perceive the terrifying miasma surrounding Subaru. This sensation is a major obstacle to trusting him after she awakens 12.
- Initially associates Subaru with an unbearable foul smell 14.
- Later questions its meaning after witnessing his repeated deaths; her interpretation that it reflects suffering is a personal hypothesis, not an established explanation 24.
Earth Dragon Handling
Rem is skilled at handling an earth dragon. Ram’s expert control of Joseph is explicitly described as equal to Rem’s 4.
Negotiation Under Pressure
Rem can identify leverage against an overwhelmingly stronger opponent and act on it despite fear 16.
- Recognizes that Madelyn needs Flop alive and therefore cannot freely dispose of his healer.
- Refuses to yield even while Madelyn grips her throat.
- Secures an agreement credited with saving the city 16 20.
Equipment / Items
- Crutch — Used for mobility in Guaral; knocked from her hand when Flop pushes her out of Madelyn’s attack 16.
Relationships
- Natsuki Subaru — The only person who remembered Rem after her name was stolen. His devotion contrasts sharply with her initial distrust after awakening. The Sky Curtain helps her recognize his reliability and the importance he must have held for her former self 12 44.
- Ram — Elder twin sister. Although Gluttony erased Ram’s memories of Rem, she remains deeply committed to finding and awakening her. Rem eventually learns their relationship through the Sky Curtain and longs to reunite with her 20 24 44.
- Priscilla — Host and source of guidance in Guaral. Rem argues with her openly, considers her more sensible than her dangerous remarks suggest, and remembers her advice about healing while treating Flop 12 16.
- Flop O’Connell — Companion who suffers a near-fatal wound protecting her. Rem immediately fights for the opportunity to heal him; he continues to hope for her reunion with Subaru 16 42.
- Kuna and Holly — Shudrak women assigned to protect her during the battle of Guaral. Their encouragement helps her recognize the importance of her work as a healer 14.
- Madelyn Eschart — Attacks Flop after Rem approaches to help her. Rem subsequently negotiates with her by using Flop’s treatment as leverage 16 20.
- Berstetz — Explains her value to the imperial authorities while keeping her under observation in the capital 18.
- Emilia — Recognizes how deeply Subaru cherishes Rem and regards her as a rival for his romantic attention 34.
- Louis — Subaru connects Rem’s memory loss to Louis’s actions as Gluttony, yet also regards Louis as the remaining tenuous connection between himself and the amnesiac Rem 10.
