For some reason, the moment she heard Bo Yan's voice, Wen Ning suddenly wanted to cry.
The musclehead folded his arms across his chest and signaled his lackey with a look. The lackey immediately delivered their signature kidnapper line.
"Bo Xubai, right? We've got your woman..."
Wen Ning gritted her teeth. You fucking idiots, do you even know you kidnapped the wrong person?
Bo Yan fell silent on the other end for a moment. "A scam?"
"Fuck," the musclehead swore, snatching the phone from his lackey. He grabbed Wen Ning by the hair and roared, "Talk!"
Wen Ning felt as if her scalp were being ripped off. She wanted to kill these kidnappers.
She had no idea whether Bo Yan had guessed her situation, so she could only test the waters by calling him "honey."
On a secluded path outside the warehouse.
Hearing that slightly trembling "honey" over the phone, Bo Yan tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his throat going dry.
He had heard Wen Ning's muffled grunt of pain before she called him honey.
These idiots had kidnapped the wrong person, and they still dared to lay hands on her!
A sinister darkness filled Bo Yan's eyes.
He asked in a low voice, "How much do you want?"
They named a figure, then added, "Don't try to be clever and call the cops. Otherwise, the next time you see your woman, she'll be nothing but a corpse."
Bo Yan stared at the warehouse ahead, his expression dark as he listened to the kidnappers' wild, celebratory laughter.
Scenes like this were nothing new to Bo Yan. Huyang Town was a lawless place, and people cornered him every few days.
He had nothing to fear. All he had to do was beat them.
But Wen Ning was different. He didn't know what kind of life she had led before coming here, but it certainly hadn't been anything like his.
She would be scared.
After waiting ages without an answer from "Bo Xubai," the musclehead threatened to kill the hostage again.
To his surprise, a mocking laugh suddenly came from the other end. "Oh, then go ahead and kill her."
The kidnappers froze on the spot.
Wen Ning froze too.
But instinctively, she felt that now Bo Yan knew she really had been kidnapped, he wouldn't stand by and do nothing.
Even if he didn't care about her, he had to consider the Wen Family.
If anything really happened to her, he would have a hard time answering to his father.
As her mind raced furiously, she heard Bo Yan scoff again-
"What, don't tell me you don't dare?"
"Or are you scared?"
"Are you that useless? Want me to teach you?"
"Take a knife and draw it lightly across her artery-bang, blood everywhere. How's that? Sounds fun, doesn't it?"
Inside the dark, damp warehouse, the kidnappers listened to Bo Yan calmly describe the murder scene, their hair standing on end.
How was that old bastard's son even crazier than the old bastard himself?!
But the musclehead soon realized he was being belittled and threatened. His grip on Wen Ning's hair tightened again as he roared, "You really fucking think I won't do it?!"
The pain in her scalp snapped Wen Ning back to her senses.
Her eyes reddened as she shouted into the phone, "Bo Xubai, how can words that cold come out of your thirty-seven-degree mouth?! Keep this up and you won't have a wife anymore!"
The musclehead impatiently slapped her. "Get to the fucking point!"
Fuck!
Wen Ning cursed inwardly!
Using the slap as cover, she quickly scanned her surroundings and began begging Bo Yan to hurry over and save her. "There are five or six of them, so many, and they have knives. Honey, I'm so scared. They really will kill me. Hurry and save me, boohoo..."
She sobbed so hard she hiccupped, looking utterly terrified.
The musclehead was finally satisfied. "Hear that? You've got two hours. If you don't show up, I'll mail her corpse back to you!"
With a beep, the musclehead hung up.
Pretending to be frightened, Wen Ning lowered her head and quietly sniffled.
One kidnapper grew irritated by her crying. Using lookout duty as an excuse, he took his cigarettes outside for a smoke.
The warehouse belonged to an abandoned factory that had gone out of business a few years earlier. A moss-covered wall over two meters high surrounded the factory grounds.
When Bo Yan climbed over the wall, he spotted a tall, skinny man smoking and pissing in a corner.
Bo Yan crept up behind him, clamped a hand over his mouth, and, without so much as blinking, delivered a vicious chop to his neck.
The tall, skinny man went down before he could struggle.
Bo Yan unbuttoned his shirt and stripped the tall, skinny man's clothes off...
The warehouse stood on the shaded side, dark and damp.
The musclehead and his gang were already squatting around, smoking and playing cards out of boredom.
Seeing that Fourth, who had gone out to keep watch, had returned, the musclehead told him, "Shut that woman up. Cry, cry, cry, she's fucking annoying."
Before Fourth even came over, Wen Ning immediately shut her mouth and stopped acting.
Only her shoulders were still shaking.
The moment Bo Yan entered the warehouse, he saw Wen Ning tied to a chair, her head lowered and her shoulders trembling as she cried. He looked at the musclehead as though he were already dead.
He made little effort to disguise himself. As if he had walked onto his own turf, he headed straight toward Wen Ning with a baseball bat in hand.
A pair of leather shoes suddenly appeared beneath her lowered gaze. Wen Ning froze, then her heart began pounding wildly.
She suppressed the urge to look up and pretended she was dazed from crying, leaning her head forward slightly to rest it against the man standing before her.
After about three seconds, Wen Ning sat back.
Bo Yan's lashes trembled.
He understood that she was telling him, in her own way, that she knew he was here.
Just as she had understood his hint ten minutes earlier and, between sobs, told him how many kidnappers there were and what weapons they had.
After a moment's thought, Bo Yan raised a hand and pressed it against her head.
The touch was light, but immensely reassuring.
Bo Yan wasted no time. After briefly telling her not to be afraid through his gestures, he moved behind her, took a dagger from his pocket, and cut the ropes around her hands.
Just then, someone beside the musclehead suddenly called out-
"Fourth, get over here and play some cards, fuck! What are you doing-wait! Boss, that's not Fourth!"
Everything changed in an instant!
Realizing the man who had just entered wasn't Fourth, the musclehead and his gang charged with their weapons in hand!
Wen Ning's pupils jolted. She hurriedly pulled off the ropes around her hands and grabbed the chair she had just been sitting on, looking ready to fight them to the death herself!
Despite the tension of the moment, Bo Yan suddenly felt like laughing.
He grabbed her wrist and pulled her behind him. Reaching back with his other hand, he pushed the baseball bat into her palm. His eyes remained fixed coldly on the kidnappers, but his words were for her.
"Find somewhere to hide. Whatever happens outside, don't come out."
Wen Ning knew she ought to listen and hide now. Bo Yan should be able to handle them alone, but-
Before she could get anywhere with that "but," she saw Bo Yan tilt his head slightly.
The dim warehouse light divided his face into light and shadow.
Part of him lay in the light, while part melted into the darkness.
The side he left facing Wen Ning was the one in the light.
Then Wen Ning saw a faint smile suddenly surface in those usually dim peach-blossom eyes.
A low voice, gentle enough to deserve the word, came from above her head.
"Wen Ning, be good."
