Background / History
Dumbledore once shared an intensely emotional relationship with Gellert Grindelwald. Seeing Argus at his Sorting recalls a valley and two months of infatuation, prompting Dumbledore to whisper Gellert’s name 14.
According to Argus’s private account, Dumbledore helped establish Grindelwald’s original goal and slogan, but later broke their Blood Pact and fought him. Argus blames Dumbledore for his father’s confinement in Nurmengard, making their shared past a source of resentment as well as emotional leverage 12 15.
By Argus’s arrival in Britain, Dumbledore possesses enough influence for Argus to regard the country as his territory. Dumbledore has also planned Harry Potter’s development from birth through his arrival at Hogwarts, viewing him as the future hope against Voldemort 5 30.
Appearance
- White hair and beard, identifying him immediately to Argus at the Hogwarts staff table 12.
- An aged, deeply lined face, with his furrowed brow repeatedly reflecting concern over Harry and Argus 15 30.
- Carries a wand, which he uses like a conductor’s baton during the school song 14.
Personality
Dumbledore’s commitment to peace coexists with a strong desire to direct other people’s choices. Even Argus acknowledges that he has devoted his life to peace and is willing to sacrifice himself, not merely others. Argus nevertheless condemns his tendency to impose his own ideas on everyone around him 15.
His management of Harry shows this controlling side clearly. He arranges encounters intended to encourage Harry toward Gryffindor, selects Ron as a prospective companion, and asks Snape to protect Harry’s development from Argus’s influence. When Snape resists, Dumbledore invokes Lily Potter’s memory to secure his agreement 13 30.
Dumbledore remains deeply vulnerable to memories of Grindelwald. Argus’s calculated remarks leave him red-eyed, oblivious to hot tea spilling onto his hand, and so distracted that he temporarily forgets why he summoned the boy 15.
He also enjoys playful eccentricity: he opens the feast with four nonsensical words, enthusiastically conducts the school song, and offers sweets during serious conversations 14 41 47.
Abilities & Skills
Magical Power
- Described as the strongest living wizard; Argus recognizes that his own abilities remain far below Dumbledore’s level 2 39 48.
- Remains composed while Vinda Rosier points a wand at him, with his confidence explicitly grounded in his formidable strength 47.
- Makes the feast’s remaining food disappear and produces dancing musical notes while conducting the school song 14.
- Despite his reputation, considers his age a serious obstacle to confronting a resurrected Voldemort 30.
Legilimency
- Recognized by Argus as a master of Legilimency 5.
- Cannot uncover Argus’s true thoughts through his Occlumency; Dumbledore explicitly acknowledges this limitation to Snape 30.
Planning and Political Influence
- Coordinates Harry’s early environment, school arrival, and intended support network 13 30.
- Reassesses potential companions when Ron proves unsuitable, considering temperament, talent, family backing, and existing loyalties 41.
- Possesses substantial influence over Britain’s Ministry and pure-blood society, but cannot freely override families when their fundamental interests are threatened 47 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Argus’s Admission and the Sorting Ceremony
Dumbledore hesitates after Argus’s name appears in the Book of Admittance, but ultimately sends his Hogwarts acceptance letter. He expects the boy to choose Durmstrang instead. At the welcoming ceremony, Argus’s blond hair, blue eyes, and surrounding supporters immediately remind him of Grindelwald 12.
The Sorting reveals that Harry’s social circle is not developing as Dumbledore intended. Neville’s placement in Hufflepuff puzzles him, while Harry’s prolonged indecision alarms him. Dumbledore suspects Argus has counteracted his efforts to present Gryffindor as Harry’s natural choice; he visibly relaxes only when the Hat finally announces Gryffindor 13.
First Private Meeting
After the feast, Dumbledore sends Snape to bring Argus to his office. Argus turns the conversation toward Grindelwald, deliberately exploiting Dumbledore’s regret and longing. Snape’s return—with news that the Slytherin first-years will obey only Argus—reminds Dumbledore of his original concern and exposes the extent of the boy’s influence 14 15.
Harry’s Companions and Snape’s Assignment
Ron’s conduct forces Dumbledore to question his choice of companion for Harry. He had expected the Weasley family’s abilities and connections to provide valuable support, but fears Ron’s jealousy and showing off may instead lead Harry astray 30.
When Snape reports Argus’s unwilling encounter with Quirrell, Dumbledore concludes that Argus may have detected Voldemort’s attempted Legilimency. He asks Snape to pay closer attention to Argus, citing both his resemblance to Grindelwald and his proximity to Harry. Snape accepts only after Dumbledore appeals to his feelings for Lily 30.
Agreement with Argus
Following another dispute involving Ron, Harry, Draco, and Argus, Dumbledore privately apologizes to Argus for his experiences at school. He then proposes that Argus offer Harry appropriate guidance at important moments, rather than remain constantly at his side 41.
Dumbledore reaches this compromise reluctantly: Neville seems too timid, Seamus lacks the necessary backing, Hermione is devoted to Argus and hostile toward Harry, and Draco is unsuitable. Argus agrees in exchange for Dumbledore handling pure-blood opposition to his forthcoming Diagon Alley shops 41.
Diagon Alley Opening
Dumbledore attends the opening and meets Argus privately after a confrontation with Vinda. Argus presents the list of businesses covered by their agreement, revealing a much larger undertaking than Dumbledore’s expected five or six shops 47 48.
The list leaves Dumbledore facing conflicts with powerful families over their core interests. Argus presses him to honor his promise; after repeated hesitation, Dumbledore takes the parchment and vanishes without retracting the agreement 48.
Relationships
- Gellert Grindelwald — Former intimate companion and later opponent. Memories of their relationship remain powerful enough to overwhelm Dumbledore during encounters with Gellert’s son 14 15.
- Argus Grindelwald — Student, suspected threat, and reluctant bargaining partner. Dumbledore distrusts his influence over Harry but eventually recruits him to provide limited guidance 30 41.
- Harry Potter — His principal hope against Voldemort. Dumbledore carefully engineers Harry’s surroundings and insists that nothing compromise his development 13 30.
- Severus Snape — Trusted operative who reports on Quirrell and Argus. Their exchanges are strained by Snape’s objections to monitoring a child and Dumbledore’s use of Lily’s memory 30.
- Ron Weasley — Initially chosen as Harry’s supporting companion. Repeated misconduct causes Dumbledore to conclude that Ron should no longer be Harry’s closest friend 30 41.
- Aberforth Dumbledore — His brother and the owner of the Hog’s Head. Aberforth knows Albus’s youthful abilities well enough to judge that Argus’s combat performance exceeds what Albus could manage at the same age 44.
- Voldemort — The enemy whose return Dumbledore seeks to prevent. Dumbledore also repeatedly refused his earlier ambition to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts 24 35.
