Background / History
Meeting Argus Grindelwald
Draco first meets Argus while accompanying Lucius to a Malfoy-owned manor being considered for purchase by Argus and Vinda Rosier. Initially irritated at having to attend, Draco becomes enthusiastic upon discovering that Argus will also be starting Hogwarts. He immediately asks about Quidditch and broomsticks 4.
After the purchase, Draco stays overnight at Argus’s invitation and accompanies him to Diagon Alley. Argus privately regards Draco as an accessible route into Britain’s pure-blood society, unlike the more calculating Lucius. A gathering hosted by Draco subsequently introduces Argus to other pure-blood children and, through them, their families 5 8.
Changing His Views
At Madam Malkin’s, Draco meets Harry Potter but jeopardizes their budding friendship by insulting Hagrid’s occupation and mixed ancestry. Argus challenges him to judge nobility by character rather than bloodline and points out that insulting a friend’s companion is itself discourteous 7.
Although initially defensive, Draco accepts the criticism and asks Argus to accompany him while he apologizes. He sincerely apologizes to both Hagrid and Harry, who forgive him. His later behavior shows a partial change: he stops invoking pure-blood superiority in every argument, though his hostility toward the Weasleys remains 7 10.
Early Hogwarts Life
On the journey to Hogwarts, Ron accuses Draco of stealing Neville’s toad, Trevor, after finding him searching the compartments with Crabbe and Goyle. Argus summons Trevor from a nearby compartment, establishing Draco’s innocence. Neville apologizes, and Ron is eventually made to apologize as well 10 11.
In Slytherin, Draco joins Pansy and Daphne in leading a group of pure-blood first-years during a confrontation with rival students. He later explains the house’s chief-ranking system to Argus and enthusiastically supports his challenges against older students 16 17.
Flying Accident and Quidditch Selection
During Flying Class, Draco pursues Ron after Ron steals Argus’s textbook. When Ron throws the book away, Draco abandons the chase to retrieve it. His worn school broom snaps under the strain, sending him falling toward the ground. Argus transforms the grass into mattresses and saves him; despite his injuries, Draco’s first concern is returning the recovered book 25 26.
Draco receives treatment in the Hospital Wing, where numerous students visit with gifts. Madam Pomfrey expects his bruises to improve enough for him to resume classes the following day 27.
His flying during the incident attracts Marcus’s attention and earns him a place as Slytherin’s youngest Seeker. Lucius rewards his selection with a Nimbus 2000 39.
Trophy Room Duel
Ron’s claim that Draco only made the team because of his broom prompts Draco to arrange an 11:30 p.m. duel in the Trophy Room. He asks Argus to serve as his second, but boasts about the supposedly secret encounter so widely that other Slytherins gather to cheer them on 39.
Harry accompanies Ron, leaving Draco hurt by his friend’s choice. After Ron attacks Argus, Draco confronts Harry over repeatedly defending Ron while overlooking his mistreatment of their other friends. Draco then duels Harry and decisively overwhelms him 39 40.
Although Draco fears punishment when Mrs. Norris and Filch arrive, Filch instead praises him and Argus for restraining Harry and Ron. At the subsequent meeting in Dumbledore’s office, Arthur Weasley personally apologizes to both Draco and Argus 40 41.
Appearance
- Platinum-blond hair, recognizable enough for Ollivander to identify him as a Malfoy 6.
- Aristocratic bearing, which Ollivander associates with his pure-blood upbringing 6.
- Green Slytherin robes during his first-year flying lessons 26.
Personality
Draco is talkative, excitable, and intensely enthusiastic about Quidditch. He eagerly seeks companionship with children of comparable standing, but is restless during prolonged study. His vanity persists after Argus begins mentoring him: he repeatedly recounts Gryffindor students asking Argus for help, exaggerates his confrontation with Ron, and publicizes his midnight duel 4 5 8 22 34 39.
His inherited blood prejudice is not immovable. Although pride initially prevents him from admitting fault over Hagrid, he responds to Argus’s criticism with genuine remorse and a sincere apology. His loyalty can also override self-preservation: he risks a dangerous aerial pursuit to recover Argus’s book and remains concerned about returning it after his fall 7 26.
Abilities & Skills
Flying
Draco is an exceptionally talented flyer for his year 26.
- Catches Ron despite beginning his pursuit later.

Dueling
His pure-blood family education provides a foundation that is strengthened by Argus’s instruction 40.
- Uses Rictusempra, Tarantallegra, and Incarcerous against Harry.
- Forces Harry onto the defensive so thoroughly that Harry cannot effectively retaliate.
- Understands the role of a dueling second and initially considers taking Goyle when he cannot locate Argus 39 40.

- School broomstick — Used during his pursuit of Ron; its worn condition causes it to snap during intense flying 26.
Relationships
- Argus Grindelwald — Close friend, mentor, and protector. Argus initially cultivates the friendship for access to pure-blood society, but is genuinely moved by Draco’s determination to recover his book. - Daphne Greengrass — Childhood acquaintance who forcefully defends him against Ron’s accusation and worries about his dangerous aerial chase 11 26.
