History

Outbreak of the Second Shinobi World War

Sand and Stone forces attacked Konoha’s camp in the Land of Rain, beginning the Second Shinobi World War. During the conflict, the Sand Ninja controlled most of the Land of Rain bordering the Land of Wind and maintained a defensive line of small outposts 15 49 57.

The conflict initially involved fighting among multiple sides. Later, the Sand and Stone Ninja stopped attacking each other and concentrated on Konoha. Hanzo likewise began targeting Konoha exclusively, leaving it fighting three opponents at once 74.

Pursuit of Yakushi Nonō

Hatake Sakumo’s team crossed the Sand Ninja defensive line while traveling to recover Yakushi Nonō. They eliminated a twenty-one-person outpost, concealed the traces of the attack, and entered the Land of Wind ahead of schedule 49 50 51.

After the rescue, Sand Ninja surrounded the Konoha party in a border town and pursued them toward the Land of Rivers. Reinforcing squads repeatedly joined the chase. Sakumo and the Anbu eventually stayed behind to delay the pursuers while Shin’un’s squad escorted Nonō onward 55 56 57 58.

The pursuit force included children whom Shin’un judged younger than himself, leading him to suspect that Sunagakure’s manpower shortage had forced it to deploy academy students 58.

Southern Land of Rain Campaign

A force of five thousand Sand Ninja pressured Nara Shikahito’s three thousand Konoha defenders in the southern Land of Rain. Nearly a hundred Sand Ninja penetrated the defensive line but were intercepted and killed by Shin’un’s advancing reinforcements 80 81 82 83 84.

Chiyo led a mass frontal assault after treating ninja poisoned in earlier fighting against Hanzo. According to Shikahito, her desire to avenge her son and daughter-in-law, Da and Raku, drove the attack. Despite their numerical advantage, the Sand Ninja withdrew after hours of fighting without achieving a breakthrough 86 88.

Konoha subsequently raided Sand Ninja supply and intelligence outposts. Intelligence recovered by Shin’un’s force enabled Shikahito to launch a sustained offensive; after more than two months, the Sand Ninja were retreating and abandoning strongholds 89 96 97 102.

Giant Puppet Offensive

The introduction of giant puppets disrupted Konoha’s advance. Chiyo deployed a puppeteer unit alongside more than a thousand additional ninja, and Orochimaru’s force suffered seven hundred losses. Shikahito reasoned that concentrating this force had left Sunagakure’s rear defenses vulnerable, so he led fifteen hundred ninja into the Land of Wind while Shin’un reinforced the front 112 113.

The new weapons allowed small Sand Ninja formations to suppress larger Konoha forces. Shin’un nevertheless disabled and dismantled a giant tiger puppet, killing one of its four occupants and capturing the other three 115 118 122.

During a later assault, Shin’un destroyed much of the fortress-type puppet with lightning. Chiyo escaped in the flying Valkyrie Puppet, which severely injured Manda’s tail and forced the summon to withdraw. The One-Tail subsequently rampaged through the Sand Ninja ranks; twenty-three giant puppets and several hundred ninja later gathered near the border to fight it 140 144 147.

Encirclement and Surrender

Shikahito proposed cutting the Sand Ninja’s supply routes and trapping their main force in the Land of Rain to compel Sunagakure’s surrender. Orochimaru supported the plan, leaving Shin’un responsible for containing the enemy while its command was disrupted 144.

Chiyo led a breakthrough attempt using the Chikamatsu Ten Puppets, while the Third Kazekage supported the advance with iron sand. Orochimaru and White Fang knocked the Kazekage from the sky, allowing Konoha Anbu to enclose the three combatants in the Red Yang Formation 150 151.

The Kazekage escaped the barrier, but Chiyo was near death and the remaining Sand Ninja could no longer break through. He signaled surrender with a yellow flare, then fled with her. Most Sand Ninja complied; the few who continued fighting were killed. Sunagakure’s defeat ended the Second Shinobi World War, with the Stone Ninja already withdrawing 155 156.

Prisoners and Postwar Negotiations

Konoha held 2,380 Sunagakure prisoners after the war. Their captivity created a serious security problem: Konoha veterans demanded revenge against specific captives, while Shikahito and Shin’un feared that permitting reprisals would endanger the entire prisoner population 158 163.

Ebizo led Sunagakure’s delegation to the negotiations. Shikahito opened by demanding 230 billion ryo for 2,300 prisoners; this was an opening demand, not a documented final settlement 163.

Sunagakure later delivered supplies for inspection, and its representative was permitted to visit a group of one thousand prisoners. By then, Danzō oversaw prisoner security, and Shikahito stated that the ordinary captives were incapable of fighting. The thousand prisoners were eventually handed over and escorted home by a Sunagakure Jonin, many displaying pronounced fear of their former captors 169 170 172.

Later Losses

The Third Kazekage was later assassinated by Sasori of the Red Sands. Kakuzu also attacked Sunagakure and abducted the One-Tail, depriving the village of both its Kazekage and its tailed beast 192.

Organization and Leadership

Member / Unit Role
Third Kazekage Village leader and battlefield combatant; used Magnet Release to mine gold to finance the war 129 150.
Chiyo Major battlefield commander, puppeteer, and medical specialist who treated ninja poisoned by Hanzo 88 150.
Ebizo Co-commander, intelligence chief, postwar negotiator, and Chiyo’s younger brother 88 163.
Puppeteer force Operated conventional and giant puppets; Sunagakure had roughly one thousand puppeteers at most when the giant weapons appeared 112.
Sensory personnel Included long-range sensory ninja, described as rare among the Sand Ninja 169.
  • Ranks: Documented formations include Genin, Chunin, and Jonin. One border outpost contained three Jonin, ten Chunin, and eight Genin 49.
  • Wartime recruitment: Sunagakure hastily promoted large numbers of young Jonin to replace losses 102.
  • Economic limits: Its desert economy left it short of funds, while prolonged warfare strained supplies and manpower 113 129.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

  • Used wind blades, compressed-air projectiles, defensive wind barriers, and gusts carrying sand and dirt to obstruct vision 58 82.
  • Coordinated Wind Release allowed numerically superior Sand Ninja to pressure Shin’un’s raiding force in a direct ninjutsu exchange 97.
  • Individual proficiency varied considerably, from highly capable Jonin to Chunin whose techniques Shin’un judged poorly formed 82 104.

Puppetry

  • Puppeteers controlled their weapons through chakra threads 112 122.
  • Giant puppets combined thick metal armor, mobility, close-range weapons, and large-scale Wind Release attacks 115 127 134.
  • Chapter 112 describes a giant puppet requiring nine operators; the tiger puppet later dismantled by Shin’un contained four occupants 112 122.
  • Chiyo’s personal arsenal included the Chikamatsu Ten Puppets and the flying Valkyrie Puppet 140 150.

Fieldcraft and Sensing

  • Maintained outpost networks, patrols, guarded intelligence stores, and barrier-protected command facilities 49 96 97.
  • Used persistent pursuit, ranged harassment, kunai, and explosive tags to slow retreating opponents 57 99.
  • One long-range sensor used a breeze-associated technique to perceive approaching ninja several kilometers away 169.

Equipment and Weapons

Giant Puppets

Type Documented Features Limitations / Fate
Beast-type Often over ten meters tall; armored and highly agile. Examples used large-scale Wind Release and long tails tipped with spiked hammers 115 127 134. Shin’un melted part of a tiger puppet’s forepaw before dismantling it 118 122.
Humanoid-type Carried a close-combat long blade and a hollow-tubed weapon that discharged powerful, long-range Wind Release 127. Constant movement helped prevent Konoha squads from coordinating attacks against weak points 134.
Fortress-type Six-legged artillery platform with a thick steel shell, five barrier layers, and the ability to release numerous large-scale Wind Release attacks 130 134. Slow-moving; only one was available. Shin’un’s lightning attack melted nearly half its body 130 140.
Valkyrie Puppet Flying puppet controlled by Chiyo; evaded Manda’s tail strike and nearly severed the tail 140. Carried Chiyo out of Shin’un’s attack range during the fortress battle 140.

Other Equipment

  • Kunai, shuriken, and explosive tags: Used in ordinary combat, pursuit, and ranged attacks from behind giant puppets 57 99 115.
  • Puppet scrolls: Stored deployable puppets, including Chiyo’s Chikamatsu Ten Puppets 122 150.
  • Yellow flak jackets: Worn by Sand Ninja defending the camp attacked by Orochimaru 134.

Tactics

  • Outpost defense: Small garrisons formed a continuous defensive line near the Land of Wind 49.
  • Conventional engagements: Large battles opened with coordinated ninjutsu before fighters dispersed into individual or squad-level combat 115.
  • Mobile-fortress formations: Ordinary ninja sheltered behind an armored giant puppet and attacked at range, intervening together whenever enemy attacks threatened to immobilize it 115.
  • Breakthrough formations: During the final escape attempt, Chiyo cleared the path while other ninja clustered around their Jonin and advanced without lingering 150.
  • Strategic weakness: Giant puppets did not solve Sunagakure’s manpower shortage. Concentrating troops at the front exposed rear strongholds and supply routes to Konoha attacks 113 144.
