History
Accepting His Students
Orochimaru initially resists taking responsibility for Hirakawa Shin'un, Shiina Kō, and Uchiha Yūichi, explaining that Hiruzen Sarutobi insisted on the assignment because of one particular student. His glance toward Shin'un identifies the boy as the reason. He makes their acceptance conditional on passing his test, warning that failures will return to Konoha 25.
Before the formal test, he attacks Shin'un's neck with a kunai to assess his reactions. Shin'un escapes with the Body Flicker Technique, impressing Orochimaru: even though he withheld his full strength, ordinary Chunin and weaker Jonin would have struggled to react 25.
The team’s formal challenge is to learn C-rank ninjutsu within three hours and demonstrate it in combat. Shin'un instead modifies Lightning Release: Lightning Wall, attracting Orochimaru’s interest with altered hand seals, increased defensive strength, and an outward-spreading paralysis attack. Orochimaru judges the result an A-rank technique and accepts all three students, appointing Shin'un squad captain 26 29 30 31.
Teaching During the War
Despite his command duties, Orochimaru prepares individual training plans and teaches his students to remain calm, think carefully, and observe their surroundings. He also explains Konoha’s voluntary rewards policy for useful innovations. Shin'un agrees to submit Lightning Release: Lightning Ring Wall for an S-rank mission record and approximately twenty million ryo 31 33.
Orochimaru brings the students along on an operation against a Stone Ninja stronghold specifically to expose them to experienced ninja at work. He instructs Shin'un to restrain his teammates rather than let them charge into combat. During the attack, Orochimaru fights three enemy Jonin simultaneously 33 41.
After Shiina Kō suffers a severe thigh injury, he provides emergency treatment but recognizes that her shattered bone and damaged chakra pathways require a professional medical-nin. He orders an immediate return for treatment. Soon afterward, he delivers Shin'un’s Chunin identification and tells him to gain experience leading missions 45 46.
Fighting Sunagakure
After operations on the Rain Ninja front, Orochimaru leads roughly two thousand reinforcements to Nara Shikahito’s camp and reunites with his students. He also checks on Nawaki at Tsunade’s request, reminding him to write to his sister 90 91 92.
His force later suffers a major defeat when Chiyo attacks with a thousand Sand Ninja and dozens of giant puppets. Orochimaru breaks several ribs but severs Chiyo’s right arm. His report records nearly seven hundred Konoha casualties against roughly two hundred enemy losses, with medical and logistics units almost destroyed. Shikahito accepts responsibility for the forced march that left Orochimaru’s troops exhausted before the ambush 111 112.
Orochimaru studies the enemy puppets and attempts an underground assault on the fortress-type model. The attackers penetrate its five barriers but cannot damage the steel shell beneath; only Orochimaru and one elite Jonin survive. He subsequently avoids the fortress and attacks dispersed Sand Ninja positions, exploiting its inability to cover the entire front 128 130.
To break the stalemate, he organizes an assault using 1,078 Konoha ninja as a distraction while Shin'un approaches the fortress puppet. Shin'un’s prepared lightning attack destroys much of its body, but Chiyo emerges in the airborne Valkyrie Puppet. After Manda is wounded and disappears, Orochimaru evades the Valkyrie’s attack with snakes and disables a damaged puppet’s hands with Lightning Release 133 140 141.
Noticing desert sand leaking from the Valkyrie, Orochimaru deduces that the One-Tail is sealed inside as its chakra source. He proposes turning that threat against the Sand Ninja, then leads Konoha’s withdrawal while the released beast rampages through enemy ranks 142 144.
In the final fighting, Orochimaru and Hatake Sakumo force the Third Kazekage down from the air, allowing Anbu to enclose all three within the Red Yang Formation. The Kazekage eventually escapes and surrenders his remaining forces. Orochimaru and Sakumo tell Shin'un that they never expected to kill him 150 155 156.
Return to Konoha and Hokage Tenure
After the war, Orochimaru helps guard Sunagakure prisoners before returning to Konoha with Tsunade and his students. He admits that years away have made him miss the village. After reporting to Hiruzen, he promptly heads home to consult texts about new research ideas 161 172 173 174.
During the viral outbreak, Shin'un remains within Orochimaru’s barrier until he recovers his human form. Orochimaru subsequently becomes the Fourth Hokage. When vampires appear in Kirigakure, he convenes a Five Kage Summit; the Mizukage attacks during the meeting and is exposed as a vampire 192.
Six years of peace follow. Orochimaru becomes increasingly absorbed in science and resigns, allowing Shin'un to succeed him as Fifth Hokage 192.
Appearance
- Cold expression and intimidating presence: His demeanor repeatedly chills those around him, especially during his first meetings with his students 24 25.
- Distinctive voice: Speaks in a raspy, hoarse voice 25 28.
- Purple eye makeup: Visible when he departs the Land of Rain for Konoha 172.
- Wartime maturation: Three years into the war, his once-youthful face has become colder and more mature 47.
Personality
Orochimaru’s aloof manner conceals a strong sense of responsibility toward Konoha and his students. He provides unrestricted access to his accumulated ninjutsu collection and teaches everything from technique development to command experience and concealment. His students’ anxiety upon learning of his injuries reflects the attachment formed through that instruction 110.
He values rational judgment and practical experience over reckless displays of strength. Rather than encourage his inexperienced students to distinguish themselves in battle, he tells them to observe veterans and become dependable teammates. He is also uncomfortable with inspirational speeches, preferring direct orders to ceremonial encouragement 31 33.
His central intellectual ambition is to understand every ninjutsu. At the beginning of his teaching career, he has not begun pursuing immortality or become obsessed with the Sharingan. Even after the war, his knowledge has limits: he and Shin'un cannot establish the principles needed to transform a human body into lightning 25 30 160.
He occasionally reveals dry humor, particularly when teasing Yūichi about past disciplinary measures. His affection for Konoha also becomes explicit when he returns after years on the battlefield 126 173.
Abilities & Skills
Ninjutsu Research and Instruction
Orochimaru began independently studying ninjutsu in his teens and maintains a personal collection accumulated over more than a decade 29 110.
- Identifies changes in hand seals, chakra consumption, range, and practical effectiveness when evaluating Shin'un’s modified Lightning Wall 29 30 31.
- Helps Shiina Kō adapt Water Release and assists Yūichi in improving Fire Release 102 110.
- Gives all three students unconditional access to his collection, which includes Lightning Release: Lightning Tiger Massacre 61 110.
- Studies captured giant puppets and their weapons in a dedicated research tent 127 128.
- Cannot complete the theoretical basis of Body Transformation into Lightning; he and Shin'un shelve it after tentatively linking it to Yang Release 160.
Snake Techniques
Hidden Shadow Snake Hands releases living snakes from his sleeves for attacks and maneuvering 141 150.
- Anchors snakes to a damaged giant puppet to pull himself out of an aerial attack’s path 141.
- Uses giant snakes as whips to knock the Third Kazekage toward the ground 150.
Summoning: Manda
Orochimaru summons the enormous purple snake Manda to engage giant puppets and powerful opponents 134 150.
- Provides a platform from which Orochimaru can attack elevated targets 150.
- Can occupy giant puppets, but has previously been overwhelmed and injured by them 111 140.
- Is difficult to control: Manda disregards Orochimaru’s warning against the Valkyrie Puppet and disappears after suffering a severe tail wound 140.
Lightning Release
- Lightning Release: Lightning Spear: Precisely destroys the joints of a giant puppet’s approaching hands, disabling them 141.
- Technical analysis: Quickly recognizes the relationship between electrical output, paralysis, lethality, and chakra cost in Shin'un’s techniques 30.
Medical Ninjutsu
Orochimaru uses green, vitality-bearing Yang Release chakra to treat injuries 45.
- Improves Shiina Kō’s wound and stops the bleeding before bandaging her thigh 45.
- Recognizes that embedded bone fragments and damaged chakra pathways exceed his treatment capabilities and require specialist care 45.
Mobility and Combat
- Body Flicker Technique: Repeatedly uses the technique at high speed during elite operations and the return journey to Konoha 132 172.
- Close-range speed: His restrained kunai attack is fast enough that ordinary Chunin and weaker Jonin would struggle to evade it 25.
- Multiple opponents: Fights three Stone Jonin at once during the stronghold raid 41.
Battlefield Command and Analysis
- Directs reconnaissance, watch arrangements, troop movements, and coordinated attacks 34 35 133.
- Reports the giant puppets’ assembly requirements, energy limitations, and vulnerable joints 111.
- Switches to dispersed attacks when a direct assault on the fortress puppet proves untenable 130.
- Deduces the One-Tail’s role as a puppet power source from leaking sand and prior intelligence 142.
Barrier Ninjutsu
- Maintains a barrier around Shin'un while he recovers from his monstrous transformation; its name and operating limits are not specified 192.
Equipment / Items
- Kunai and ninja tool pouch — Carries conventional ninja tools, including the kunai used in Shin'un’s reaction test 25.
- Ninjutsu scrolls — Supplies training techniques and later gives Shiina Kō Wind Release: Great Breakthrough 26 126.
- Personal books and ninjutsu collection — Research and teaching resources shared with his students 110 128.
- Sealing scroll — Stores his books when preparing to return to Konoha 172.
- Captured humanoid giant puppet — Keeps it in an enormous tent for examination; his living quarters occupy a smaller tent inside 127 128.
Relationships
- Hirakawa Shin'un — Student, appointed squad captain, research collaborator, and eventual successor as Fifth Hokage. Orochimaru recognizes his unusual combat instincts and increasingly relies on his Lightning Release 25 31 130 160 192.
- Shiina Kō — Student whose Water Release development he supports. He provides emergency treatment after her battlefield injury and later supplies a Wind Release scroll 45 110 126.
- Uchiha Yūichi — Student whose Fire Release and mental condition he monitors. His disciplinary methods include enforced reading 110 126 172.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher who arranges Shin'un’s assignment to him. Their teaching lineage makes Shin'un Hiruzen’s grandstudent 25 65.
- Tsunade — Teammate and fellow battlefield leader. Orochimaru checks on Nawaki at her request 45 46 92.
- Jiraiya — Teammate and fellow Sannin. Jiraiya’s focus on writing leaves Orochimaru carrying much of the Land of Rain command’s administrative workload 46 90.
- Nara Shikahito — Fellow commander and intelligence coordinator. Shikahito accepts responsibility for exhausting Orochimaru’s force before Chiyo’s ambush 92 112.
- Nawaki — Tsunade’s younger brother, who addresses him as “Big Brother Orochimaru” 92.
- Hatake Sakumo / White Fang — Battlefield ally who fights the Third Kazekage alongside him 150 156.
- Chiyo — Enemy commander and puppeteer. Their clashes leave Orochimaru with broken ribs and Chiyo without her right arm 111.
- Manda — Powerful but uncooperative summon whose temperament limits Orochimaru’s control 140.
