Background / History
Orochimaru trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya, eventually becoming one of the Sannin. He later served as Konoha’s commander-in-chief during the Third Shinobi World War and was considered a leading candidate for Hokage. His position gave him access to mission records and portions of the Scroll of Seals 23 40 89.
His human experimentation eventually came to Hiruzen’s attention through evidence supplied by Root. Hiruzen sent Anbu to apprehend him but softened at the decisive moment, allowing his former student to escape 155.
By Konoha’s fifty-sixth year, Orochimaru had also defected from Akatsuki after Itachi defeated him with a single glance. He was traveling, abducting children, and gathering the personnel needed to establish the Sound Ninja Village 4.
Appearance
Orochimaru’s familiar appearance combines deathly pale skin, golden eyes with vertical snake-like pupils, and purple eyeshadow extending toward the sides of his nose 23 26.
- Long scarlet tongue: Frequently flicks out or licks his lips when something interests him 23 138.
- Serpentine body: Can replace his legs with a snake’s tail and transform his arms or tongue into snakes 27 28.
- Variable build: Soft Physique Modification allows him to change his height and proportions for disguises 68.
- Female host: After Living Corpse Reincarnation, he has a delicate, beautiful face and a conspicuously feminine figure; Tsunade initially recognizes him chiefly through his chakra 87.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues immortality because he considers wealth, influence, and ordinary power temporary. Endless life would give him the time to investigate every secret and seek the world’s underlying truth. Scientific discoveries excite him more than political schemes, particularly when they concern cell division, natural energy, rare bloodlines, or the origins of chakra 34 38 138 261.
His research is inseparable from his ruthlessness. He experiments on living prisoners, regards death as meaningful when it can be put to use, and judges followers by their continuing value. Even Kimimaro’s exceptional talent does not prevent him from being viewed as a disposable tool and potential replacement body 32 88 141.
He is courteous, calculating, and capable of attracting intensely devoted followers. Naoki recognizes his skill at winning people over, while Tsunade distinguishes his frightening reputation from the teammate she once knew—though she still warns Naoki never to underestimate his cruelty 14 25 26.
His cooperation does not amount to obedience. He fundamentally trusts himself, and growing power can make him arrogant enough to leave openings for an opponent such as Black Zetsu 269.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Transforms his tongue or limbs into attacking snakes; variants can overwhelm an opponent or bind a reincarnated ninja 27 54 155.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Limbs: Sends small snakes into an opponent’s clothing to immobilize their joints 27.
- Hidden Snake Hell: Fills a large area with snakes, denying an opponent safe footing 27.
- Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes: Produces a mass of snakes from his mouth to engulf a battlefield 53.
- Giant summons: Uses snakes for combat, transport, carrying prisoners, and marking locations 23 27 40 163.
- Sage-level snake: Conducts negotiations inside the digestive tract of an enormous Ryūchi Cave snake, using its constricting muscles and acid as a trap 260 275.
- Countermeasure: Katsuyu’s splitting, medical ninjutsu, and corrosive acid make her especially effective against his snake summons 24.
Orochimaru-Style Substitution
- Sheds a damaged body and emerges intact from the discarded shell, surviving poisoned penetration, bisection, and severe burns 26 27 156.
- Requires no hand seals and is described as capable of evading most ninjutsu, including Amaterasu 26.
- Ordinarily consumes enormous chakra, but the text explicitly exempts Orochimaru himself from that drawback; against Rasa, its cost is negligible 26 146.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
- Transfers into another person’s body to escape the lifespan limit of a single host 25 87.
- Preserves his identity and largely preserves his chakra signature despite a radically different appearance 87.
- Saves him after the ambush by the self-proclaimed Madara 88.
- His female host lacks an outstanding kekkei genkai and causes recurring pain and several days of weakness each month, strengthening his interest in Kimimaro as a future vessel 141.
- Repeated use is described as causing practically negligible loss of soul power 162.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Revives dead ninja and retains access to their distinctive abilities, including the Third Kazekage’s Iron Sand 54.
- Uses sealing tags inserted into the revived bodies to suppress resistance and enforce control 54 157.
- Documented reincarnations include the Third Kazekage, Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and Nagato; he also possesses a reincarnated Madara body before Black Zetsu steals it 54 156 259 269.
- Hiruzen interrupts the attempted summoning of the coffin marked “Fourth” during the Konoha attack 156.
- Itachi exploits the technique’s dependence on its caster by placing Orochimaru under genjutsu and compelling him to dismiss the Third Kazekage 58.
- By the negotiations with Obito, Orochimaru claims the technique can restore the dead in their strongest state and offers an army of former Kage, Jinchūriki, bloodline users, and deceased Akatsuki members 259 275.
Cursed Seals and Natural Energy
- Derives the Cursed Seal from an individual whose body constantly absorbs natural energy while retaining human form and consciousness 138.
- Describes the seal as a means of granting others a form of “Sage Mode” 138.
- State One: Can strengthen a genin to chunin level, but has a low success rate and may shorten the recipient’s lifespan 138.
- Cultivation limit: Despite developing State One, he cannot perceive natural energy himself and reluctantly acknowledges the White Snake Sage’s judgment of his aptitude 139.
- Can borrow natural energy from the Sound Four’s seals because their power originates from him; this does not establish that he has mastered independent Sage Mode 162.
Biological Research
- Previously cultivated the artificial Wood Release user Tenzo, also known as Yamato 29.
- Studies Hashirama cells, cell-division limits, and the effect of Naoki’s Wood Release chakra on lobster, Hashirama, and Katsuyu samples 25 33 34.
- Identifies a limit of three hundred portions from an original Hashirama-cell sample before further divisions become ordinary cells, and suspects Wood Release chakra can overcome that limit 33.
- Obtains tissue from Black Zetsu and values it as material connected to Kaguya’s chakra, hoping to understand both kekkei genkai and her immortality 261.
Infiltration, Deception, and Other Techniques
- Soft Physique Modification: Changes his body’s shape and helps him withstand Jiraiya’s punch without injury 68 133.
- Vanishing Facial Copy Technique: Uses human-skin masks for impersonation, including having Kabuto act as his double against Itachi. The stolen skin lasts no more than three days 55.
- Earth and shadow clones: Uses substitutes to misdirect opponents, including the clone seized by Hiruzen’s Reaper Death Seal 27 160.
- Triple Rashomon: Summons three defensive gates that break through Naoki’s encircling trees 29.
- Banshō Ten’in: Counters Obito’s gravitational pull with a stronger use of the same technique 259.
- Eight Branches Technique: Identified as one of his selected forbidden techniques and a trump card 231.
- Barrier infiltration: Retains a route that allows Naoki to bypass Konoha’s detection barrier 138.
- Sealing limitation: Recognizes the compound seal containing Rōran’s Ryūmyaku but cannot undo it 40.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Drawn through a snake emerging from his mouth; easily cuts apart Naoki’s chakra-infused wooden staves 28.
- Control-tagged kunai — Inserted into reincarnated bodies to complete control over them 54 157.
- Human-skin masks — Used with body modification to impersonate officials and other ninja, including Nobunaga Kamishiro and the Fourth Kazekage 68 69 147.
- Uzumaki-hair cord — Temporarily seals Futsunomitama’s invisible blade. Orochimaru estimates that the cord will last two to four years 163.
- Futsunomitama, temporary possession — Subdues the soul-cutting sword using sacrificial souls, then gives it to Naoki after losing their ownership dispute through rock, paper, scissors 163.
- Research facilities — Maintains multiple hideouts. His early six-floor base contains a prison, storage floors, smaller laboratories, and a large biological laboratory protected by a seal 33 50.
Relationships
- Naoki Senju — Research partner and covert collaborator. Orochimaru admires his Wood Release and intelligence, while their alliance remains grounded in mutual benefit and deterrence rather than trust 29 33 141 269.
- Tsunade — Former teammate and scientific collaborator. She repeatedly warns him away from treating Naoki as research material; he declines her offer to return to Konoha with his past forgiven 24 33 50 65.
- Jiraiya — Former teammate whose habits and attachments he knows well. Persuades him to consider returning to Konoha by invoking danger to the village and Minato’s son 133.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher who once allowed him to escape. Orochimaru later attacks him during the Chunin Exams and becomes the officially designated killer of the Third Hokage 155 164.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Trusted operational assistant who handles laboratory preparation, intelligence, disguises, and reincarnation control tools 26 55 88 139 259.
- Kimimaro — Devoted subordinate valued for his Shikotsumyaku. Orochimaru considers him a potential host, provided his bloodline disease can be treated 138 141.
- Guren — Subordinate assigned to watch the surrounding area and later given instructions at his base 23 24.
- Sound Four — Subordinates tasked with battlefield barriers, Cursed Seal use, and less prestigious duties such as catching escaped snakes 30 155 160 162.
- Shimura Danzō — Partner of convenience. Orochimaru readily exposes Root’s responsibility for the attack on Tsunade and Naoki rather than accept the blame 23.
- Uchiha Itachi — Obsession and recurring opponent. Orochimaru covets his Sharingan but repeatedly struggles against his genjutsu 4 54 58.
- Obito Uchiha — Adversary turned transactional partner; Orochimaru exposes his identity and bargains reincarnated forces for the other Rinnegan 259 260 275.
- Black Zetsu — Target of interrogation and biological research who later steals Madara’s reincarnated body and severs Orochimaru’s control over it 260 261 269.
