Background and History

Root and the Hokage Ambition

Danzo was a student of the Second Hokage and an old teammate of Hiruzen Sarutobi. He resented his teacher’s decision to choose Hiruzen rather than himself as Hokage, and continued pursuing the position throughout his leadership of Root 12 23 144.

Root handled covert work that ordinary Anbu could not undertake. Danzo forcibly recruited gifted members of Konoha’s clans and had them trained into emotionless operatives whose loyalty to him superseded their other orders. These practices earned him enemies throughout the village 7 125 175.

His operations also extended beyond Konoha. He cooperated with Hanzō against the original Akatsuki in a plot that led to Yahiko’s death. The Land of Fire’s daimyo supported Root as a counterweight to the Twelve Guardian Ninja 96 209.

Destruction of the Senju Clan

Root attacked the Senju household in the Land of Fire’s capital, but Naoki Senju escaped through a secret passage. Danzo received a report that seventy-three of the household’s seventy-four bodies had reached Root’s research base. Learning that Naoki had joined Tsunade, he ordered every available Root member in Konoha to finish exterminating the clan and kill Tsunade if an opportunity arose 12.

At this point, Danzo was suffering painful backlash from implanted Hashirama cells, which he blamed on Orochimaru. Despite their cooperation, Orochimaru identified Danzo as the person controlling Naoki and Tsunade’s attackers rather than accept responsibility for the attack himself 12 23.

A spy later informed Danzo that Orochimaru was sheltering the pair and that Naoki had awakened Wood Release. Danzo briefly recognized Naoki’s potential value to Konoha, then rejected that consideration because Naoki’s return threatened both Root and his Hokage ambitions. He sent separate messages to Hanzō and Akatsuki, while the exposed hideout’s occupants relocated 36 37.

Failed Assassinations and Political Opposition

Danzo launched the Fire Hunt Plan, assigning Sai to replace Shin after Sai had killed him. The operation failed to eliminate Naoki and cost Root eleven operatives, including Sai 114 125.

Hiruzen publicly attributed the assassination attempt to failed oversight within Root. He ordered an internal investigation and confined Danzo for three months—a punishment Tsunade and Naoki regarded as little more than political theater 119 120.

Danzo nevertheless dispatched three clan jonin—Hyūga Hoheto, Ryūhei Akimichi, and O Inuzuka—against Naoki. He arranged distractions to occupy Tsunade, Hiruzen, Might Guy, and Kakashi, denying the target likely rescuers 125.

The conflict helped unite Konoha’s major clans behind Tsunade. Furious that this alliance threatened his prospects, Danzo accepted Orochimaru’s conditions for the Konoha Crush Plan, demanded its execution within six months, and insisted that both Tsunade and Naoki be killed. Hiruzen subsequently restricted Root’s activities 128 130 134.

War Preparations and Root’s Dissolution

When Kumogakure, Kirigakure, and Iwagakure began recalling their jonin, Danzo brought the intelligence to Hiruzen. He advocated canceling the Chunin Ninja Exams, recalling Konoha’s forces, and imposing wartime command. Hiruzen accepted the need to mobilize but rejected canceling the exams, recognizing that Danzo also wanted wartime authority to settle political scores 144.

Before his death, Hiruzen revealed that every member of Konoha High Command except Danzo had signed a resolution dissolving Root. Its actions would be attributed to Danzo rather than the deceased Hokage 160.

Confrontation with Kakashi

After Tsunade became Fifth Hokage, Kakashi led Anbu to seal off Root and bring Danzo in. Danzo refused, claiming that Root was conducting a classified mission 172 173.

He then threatened Konoha through explosive tags planted at important sites, including the Hokage Building, Hokage Rock, the hospital, and the school. His intention was to prevent an immediate arrest, regroup with Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu, and eventually remove Tsunade from office 173 174.

When Kakashi’s Sharingan transformed into a Mangekyō Sharingan, Danzo attempted to steal it. Kamui destroyed his left forearm, prompting him to unseal his right arm and reveal ten implanted Sharingan. He survived successive fatal attacks through Izanagi, while Inoichi Yamanaka helped Kakashi identify the connection between each revival and a permanently closing eye 174 175 176 177.

Defeat and Death

Naoki joined the battle and used Futsunomitama to inflict wounds on Danzo’s soul. He restrained Danzo with Wood Release and sealed his right arm, preventing him from voluntarily activating Izanagi to escape the torture 177 178.

Danzo used Shisui Uchiha’s Kotoamatsukami in an attempt to control Naoki and obtain Kakashi’s eye. The target was a Wood Clone, leaving the real Naoki free to attack. Danzo’s explosive-tag threat also failed: Anbu had removed the charges while Kakashi delayed him 179 180.

A Root operative’s suicide explosion allowed Danzo to escape through another use of Izanagi. Hyuga Hiashi and Hyuga reinforcements intercepted him; his attempt to take Neji hostage failed when Neji injured him with Rotation. Naoki then caught up with him 180 181.

Danzo repeatedly restored his injuries and chakra with Izanagi, but could not overcome Naoki’s sand defenses or Deep Forest Emergence. His final resistance left him exhausted, with Hashirama-cell growth breaking through his right arm. Naoki then triggered the accumulated soul wounds left by Futsunomitama, causing damage that Izanagi could no longer permanently undo 182 183.

Naoki removed Shisui’s eye before Danzo’s soul finished disintegrating. He ordered the remaining Sharingan sealed in the Anbu archives and Danzo’s corpse displayed at Konoha’s gate for three days, charging him with betraying the village and attempting to pass vital intelligence to Kirigakure 183 184.

Aftermath

Kakashi absorbed Root’s personnel, intelligence network, research facilities, ninjutsu records, and wealth into Konoha’s administration. Root’s money alone amounted to ten years of Konoha’s fiscal revenue 184.

Without Danzo’s protection, the Shimura Clan suffered retaliation from the clans he had antagonized. Its members were killed over the following two months, and the clan was erased from Konoha 247.

Appearance

  • Aged features: An elderly man with a withered right arm and an intimidating face 144 173 176.
  • Cane: Habitually walked with a polished wooden cane 12 173.
  • Bandages: Appeared with half his body bandaged; wrappings concealed his transplanted right eye 119 179.
  • Implanted right eye: Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan bore a four-pointed shuriken pattern 179.
  • Modified right arm: Carried ten Sharingan beneath a heavy, sealed metal restraint 174 175.

Personality

Danzo justified ruthless methods as necessary for Konoha’s protection. He treated Root’s results as more important than its means, yet repeatedly placed his pursuit of the Hokage position above the village’s interests. Hiruzen still trusted his loyalty, while acknowledging that personal ambition could override it 144 175.

He was harsh toward subordinates and willing to sacrifice allies. He wounded a reporting operative with a thrown pen, ordered Root members into lethal combat against their own clans, and injured his summon Baku during an attack without hesitation 12 174 177.

His ambition was particularly vulnerable to the Senju legacy. Naoki’s Wood Release and Tsunade’s political support provoked fear and resentment because they threatened the position he believed his sacrifices had earned him 36 130 182.

Danzo remained calculating when arranging assassinations and exploiting political leverage, but became increasingly reckless when cornered. His desire for Kakashi’s Mangekyō Sharingan overrode concern for Root’s survival, and his final battle deteriorated into indiscriminate attacks sustained by Izanagi 125 174 182.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

Wind was Danzo’s original chakra nature and remained his specialty after he developed other elements. His mastery ranked among Konoha’s best 220.

Technique Applications and Limits
Vacuum Blade Extended a roughly thirty-centimeter short sword to about one meter with Wind Release chakra 178 277.
Vacuum Great Sphere Fired compressed wind projectiles capable of leaving craters approximately three meters across and over a meter deep 175.
Vacuum Serial Waves Cut through trees in a nearly continuous line; one use also gravely wounded Baku 177.
Vacuum Sphere A B-rank attack that failed to stop Naoki’s Water Dragon Jutsu 182.
Chaotic Vacuum Blades An S-rank technique that shredded surrounding Wood Release growth, but imposed a severe physical burden 183.
Other techniques Used Vacuum Wave, Wind Stream, and Vacuum Wild Wave 179 182.
  • Could coat kunai in sharp wind-nature chakra 175 183.
  • Sustained a nearly ten-minute barrage before exhausting his chakra and restoring it with Izanagi 182.

Izanagi

Danzo used the Uchiha forbidden technique to reverse fatal injuries and other unfavorable conditions at the cost of a Sharingan 175 176.

  • Fatal-injury reversal: Survived a pierced heart, destruction of much of his head, and dismemberment 175 176 182.
  • Recovery: Restored lost limbs, healed injuries, and replenished expended chakra 175 182.
  • Limited uses: Each activation permanently closed one implanted eye 175 177.
  • Sealing vulnerability: Naoki’s Sand Waterfall Seal prevented voluntary activation, though a previously prepared death-triggered activation could still function 178.
  • Soul-damage limitation: Futsunomitama’s wounds persisted beneath Izanagi’s restoration and could be reopened to destroy his soul 183 184.

Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan

Danzo stole Shisui Uchiha’s eye and implanted it as his concealed right eye 174 179.

  • Kotoamatsukami: Attempted to rewrite Naoki’s perceptions and turn him into an obedient weapon 179 180.
  • First use: Danzo had not previously found a suitable target; Hiruzen’s protection prevented a safe opportunity to cast it on him 179.
  • Failed target identification: His attempt affected a Wood Clone rather than the real Naoki 180.

Hashirama-Cell Augmentation

Danzo’s implanted Hashirama cells required ten Sharingan to suppress their power 177.

  • Suffered persistent pain and backlash early in the story 12.
  • Risked losing control as he consumed the Sharingan supporting the implant 176.
  • Developed visible wooden spikes through his right arm during his final battle 183.

Summoning, Seals, and Intelligence Work

  • Baku: His summon was forced to withdraw after being wounded by Danzo’s own Wind Release 177.
  • Restraining cursed seal: Immobilized Kakashi before another attempt to steal his Sharingan 176.
  • Cipher design: Personally devised the code used by a spy within Orochimaru’s organization 36.
  • Operational planning: Coordinated surveillance, infiltrators, assassination squads, and distractions targeting potential rescuers 12 36 125.
