Childhood and Arrival at Xavier’s School

Clarice grew up moving from place to place with her adoptive father. Their poverty and unsettled life interrupted her education after only two years of schooling. They eventually lived on the outskirts of a city in Arizona, where she experienced hostility toward poor and nonwhite people 3 6 13.

A group of attackers broke into their home and killed her adoptive father. Terror, grief, and anger triggered her first teleportation, allowing her to escape. She hid around the city until hunger left her faint; the X-Men found her and brought her to Xavier’s School 3.

Isolation and Friendship

Clarice initially remained isolated even among other mutant students. Bernard had pressured classmates to avoid her while pursuing her romantically, hoping loneliness would make her accept him. She repeatedly refused to become his girlfriend 2 4.

Chen Xiao, known at school as Vitas Chen, approached her at lunch and became her friend. When Bernard demanded that he “give her up,” Chen Xiao defended her right to choose her own company. While Chen Xiao was away, Clarice’s security system detected vehicles approaching the manor under suspicious circumstances. Klaus reached the laboratory entrance in his Yellowjacket Suit, but Clarice trapped him behind its spatial protection and destroyed him by collapsing the surrounding space 156 157.
