Background / History
Childhood and Exile
Jenny was the daughter of Earl Weide and his second wife, and Keane’s elder sister. Her father’s principal wife, Lady Weide, expelled the siblings and their mother from the city lord’s manor when Keane was six. They spent the following eight years in a small country town 13 17.
With their mother in poor health, Jenny took responsibility for nursing her, raising Keane, and doing household work, including washing clothes, cooking, and chopping wood. After their mother died, the siblings returned to Chier County City to pursue her dying wish: that Keane reclaim his inheritance as their father’s surviving son 13 14.
Escort to Chier County City
Jenny first encountered Linley while traveling in a caravan. During a bandit attack, McKinley ordered his men to seize her, but Linley killed him with a single sword strike. At Lambert’s urging, Jenny subsequently requested Linley’s protection for the remaining journey, offering ten thousand gold coins payable after Keane inherited. Linley accepted just one gold coin as a deposit 12 13.
Assassins targeted the siblings in Blackstone City. Jenny disclosed the succession dispute and offered to release Linley from their agreement rather than expose him to further danger. He refused to abandon them. With Bebe and Haeru helping guard the siblings, the group survived further ambushes and Holmer’s poison attack before reaching Chier County City 14 15 16.
Regency
At Lady Weide’s welcoming banquet, Jenny challenged the claim that Keane had to wait until adulthood to inherit. She cited imperial law and demanded a written order supporting Lady Weide’s authority. Linley proposed Jenny as acting city lord, but Lady Weide rejected the arrangement and continued plotting the siblings’ deaths. Linley subsequently killed Lady Weide and her two brothers 17 18.
A month later, the Jax Clan formally appointed Keane city lord and ordered Jenny to assist him. She handled government business alongside Lambert, but discovered that the treasury could barely pay the troops and Lady Weide’s fingerprint-bound Magic Crystal Cards were unusable. Linley supplied eight unregistered cards and valuables from Holmer’s estate, worth nearly ten million gold coins 19.
The Five-Year Promise
Jenny’s gratitude toward Linley developed into affection. She brought him homemade meals while he cultivated outside the city, but he discouraged visits that interrupted his training. When he decided to leave for the imperial capital, she asked to accompany him. He refused initially, then promised to return within five years and accept her decision if she still wished to follow him 19 20.
Before leaving, Linley returned the original deposit coin for her to keep until his return and revealed his full name, Linley Baruch. Jenny preserved the coin throughout their separation 20 30.
When Linley returned, Keane was governing independently with help from his wife, Ailin. Jenny offered the coin and the outstanding escort payment; Linley accepted only the coin. He also made clear that he regarded her as a younger sister, not a romantic partner. Jenny nevertheless chose to leave, explaining that her years of administration had changed her and that she wanted to see the world beyond Chier County City 30.
Joining Linley’s Household
Jenny completed her final Jax Clan gathering as regent and handed her remaining responsibilities to Ailin. She then joined Linley at the Naier Hotel in Basil Provincial Capital. Albert, whose advances she had repeatedly rejected, pursued them and cooperated with Radiant Church agents attacking Linley 30 31.
During the Six-Pointed Angel Battle Formation ambush, Linley ordered Haeru to carry Jenny away. She initially resisted leaving him, but accepted that remaining would distract him. After returning to the battlefield, she blamed herself for his injuries; Linley explained that the Church would have attacked regardless of her presence. She carefully bandaged his broken chest before accompanying him to Yunfeng Town, where she joined his household 32 33.
Chaotic Territory Campaign
Jenny later accompanied Linley’s expedition to the Chaotic Territory, offering to handle military accounts, territorial administration, and everyday affairs. Following the seizure of Blackstone City, she arranged the takeover of household registers and granary accounts 52 53.
Over the next half year, she supervised civil administration, provisions, and military pay. When Linley launched his expansion campaign, he granted her full authority over supplies, civilian labor allocation, and proclamations reassuring conquered populations. She continued assisting with the cities’ defenses and remained among those entrusted with administration when he traveled south with Reynolds 54 56.
Appearance
- Face and hair: Delicate features and long hair, initially worn loose behind her shoulders 13.
- Clothing: Repeatedly wears pale-blue dresses; after the five-year separation, her hair is pinned behind her head 13 30 54.
- Hands: Thickened knuckles and thin palm calluses from years of household labor distinguish her from a sheltered noblewoman 13.
- Later bearing: Her youthful innocence gives way to a gentler, more mature expression, followed by a composed, capable air of authority as an administrator 30 54.
Personality
Jenny is gentle and attentive, particularly toward Keane, whom she has cared for since childhood. Her concern extends beyond her family: she offers to release Linley from his escort contract for his safety and is distressed by the innocent knights killed during Holmer’s attack 13 14 16.
Although initially shy and easily embarrassed around Linley, she is firm when defending her brother’s rights. At Lady Weide’s banquet, she maintains a steady voice despite her nervousness and openly challenges the legal basis of the older woman’s authority 17.
Her decision to follow Linley becomes increasingly independent of gratitude or romantic hope. After five years of government work and rejected marriage proposals, she insists on choosing her own future even after Linley explicitly rules out a romantic relationship 30.
