Chapter 7
Seeing that afternoon tea had become a complete mess, Su Wanqiao decided not to stay and get on Chen Muyu's bad side. She prepared to take her leave.
Chen Muyu immediately stopped her. "You there... wait a moment."
"Mom, I'm Su Wanqiao."
Su Wanqiao answered helplessly.
Chen Muyu nodded. She wanted Su Wanqiao to stay so she could hear more of her thoughts. She had also arranged for someone to investigate the Gu Family, and she still needed to compare the findings with Su Wanqiao's thoughts, so she forced a friendly smile.
"Wanqiao, don't leave just yet. It's been so long since I last saw you. I've missed you a little."
"..."
Su Wanqiao screamed inwardly, goose bumps rising all over her. The idea of Chen Muyu missing her was more shocking than Mars crashing into Earth.
She even suspected that Old Madam Fu had been possessed by a ghost and spoken those words in a delirium. Then something suddenly occurred to her.
[Come to think of it, Old Madam Fu has been taking slow-acting poison for years. Could it have damaged her brain? That stuff isn't fit to eat...]
"!!!"
Chapter 7
At those words, Chen Muyu's face went white for a moment, and she immediately began to panic. The words "slow-acting poison" had made her very heart tremble.
The revelations appearing above Su Wanqiao's head had already been shocking enough, and now more "terrible news" had arrived. For Chen Muyu herself, this was an even greater blow. The emotional shock alone was almost more than she could bear.
Without showing anything on her face, Su Wanqiao thought again.
[Old Madam Fu has heart disease. For years, she's been taking an imported special medication from overseas. Although it really can treat her heart condition, its main ingredients aren't safe and are somewhat toxic to the human body. Taking it for a short time won't cause any noticeable problems, but long-term use will affect the brain. And these problems won't show up in a physical examination at all.]
[A doctor Chen Muyu sees overseas recommended this medication to her. In fact, that doctor was bribed long ago to do this deliberately. Later, after the court auctions off all the Fu Family's assets, leaving them penniless and deeply in debt, Old Madam Fu suddenly becomes mad and witless. Everyone thinks she lost her mind because she couldn't take the shock. It never occurs to them that she ended up that way because she was poisoned.]
[What a pity. Old Madam Fu was wise and decisive when she was young. After her husband died early, she managed the Fu Group and made it flourish. Yet a series of schemes and her disappointing children brought down the company three generations had worked so hard to protect. In her later years, her muddled mind leads her to keep sneaking out, and she gets separated from the other children of the Fu Family. In the end, she's reduced to a destitute, witless beggar on the streets. It's truly awful.]
The thought filled Su Wanqiao with anguish. She really did not understand why the Fu Family had been written such a tragic ending. However glorious their lives were now, before bankruptcy, their eventual fate would be just as wretched. Her feelings were deeply conflicted.
Chen Muyu's face turned ashen for a moment. Clutching her chest, she found it even harder to breathe, and her heart could not help trembling. Even now, she carried that heart medication in her pocket at all times. Because it worked well, she had been taking it for many years.
She had never imagined that this medication actually contained toxic ingredients. If she kept taking it, she might suffer irreversible brain damage, just as Su Wanqiao had said, and ultimately become a witless madwoman.
And after the Fu Family went bankrupt, the fate awaiting her was to become separated from her children because of her witlessness and end up begging on the streets.
Chen Muyu could not believe she would fall into such circumstances. Everything that had happened today was simply too inconceivable.
And if all of this was true, the consequences would be unthinkable.
Thinking of how her eldest daughter, Fu Siyao, would be treated if she really married into the Gu Family, it was not impossible that the Gu Family was deliberately plotting to bankrupt the Fu Family.
As for this heart medication, having its ingredients tested would establish exactly what was wrong with them.
Chen Muyu seemed to realize something all of a sudden. If she and her daughter had not heard Su Wanqiao's thoughts, they would have known nothing of these schemes. She would probably still be discussing the marriage with Madam Gu, falling into their trap without anyone being any the wiser, completely unguarded.
At that thought, anger surged in her heart again.
She thought.
Investigate.
Investigate every last detail and find out what exactly is going on.
Su Wanqiao, meanwhile, had been asked to stay by Chen Muyu, who said that everyone in the Fu Family would be coming home for dinner that evening, so she did not leave.
Chen Muyu should have been very cold toward her, but instead, she even prepared a luxurious room for her to rest in.
[Hmm, what a strange mother-in-law, but she's quite nice.]
"..."
Chen Muyu stiffened. She could hardly be considered to have treated Su Wanqiao well in the past. This girl was far too easily satisfied.
An hour later, two documents containing the investigation results were gently placed on the living room table. The first was the test report for that special heart medication.
When she saw the words marked on it, her pupils abruptly contracted.
One of the ingredients detected was a drug called Bukalimin. This drug had not yet been approved domestically because its composition was unsafe and contained toxins.
Short-term use would not cause any problems, and it could treat heart disease. But if someone kept taking it year after year, even if they did not go mad, they would become witless. Moreover, this condition was irreversible. If it really became that severe, no amount of money could cure it.
Cold sweat broke out across Chen Muyu's back, and panic swept through her entire body. Because the medication had helped her heart condition, she had trusted that overseas doctor far too much. She had looked at the ingredient report only once, decided there was nothing wrong, and continued taking it.
But ingredient reports could be falsified.
Besides, her physical examinations over the years had revealed no signs of illness, so she had never suspected that anything was wrong with this special medication.
Now she felt her hair stand on end. Without realizing it, she had spent all these years taking slow-acting poison. If mind-reading had not appeared today, she would probably have continued taking it until she went mad and became witless, without ever knowing how someone had plotted against her.
