Background / History
Early Life on Ethereal Peak
Bai Fu brought Qiaoqiao from the mortal world to Ethereal Peak when she was five. As a child, she frequently sought excuses to stay close to her aloof master. He subsequently entered a fifteen-year seclusion, during which she grew into a young woman 10 107 108.
Despite being the peak master’s youngest personal disciple, Qiaoqiao attracted little attention. She spent much of her time sleeping, playing, and keeping company with A Xue and her cat, Jade Ball. Her poor trial record eventually brought her position under scrutiny: Elder Ning counted six absences and four failures, and the administrators threatened to demote her to the outer sect if she failed again 1 17.
Dreams and the Decision to Save Her Seniors
Qiaoqiao began experiencing fragmented dreams about Shen Ji and Ziling, followed by visions of her senior sisters’ disastrous futures. Believing these were revelations from the Heavenly Dao, she declared that she had been chosen to stop Ethereal Peak’s disciples from “blackening” 4 7.
Her first encounter with Ziling exposed a protection she did not know she possessed: silver sword shadows erupted from her body when the devil woman took her hostage. Initially mistaking this for her own hidden mastery, Qiaoqiao enthusiastically accepted sword instruction from Shen Ji and began practicing seriously 7 8.
Secret Realm Trial
Facing demotion, Qiaoqiao prepared with help from her master and senior sisters. Wen Zhi’s memory-enhancing pill allowed her to memorize the entire Compendium of Spirit Herbs, while Bai Fu reassured her that he would watch the trial 18 22 24.
Inside the secret realm, she partnered with Yue Tingxi and clashed with Yue Liuqin, who stole a Demon Beast’s killing blow and its points. Qiaoqiao ultimately received instruction from Sword Immortal Liuyun and finished first with 1,000 points, ahead of Yue Tingxi’s 800. She then insisted that Yue Liuqin honor their wager publicly on the Jade Slip forum 26 32.
Her victory also paid off numerous bets made by disciples who expected her to fail. Their Spirit Stones, manuals, and Law Treasures were worth more than ten times her stake 34.
Sect Scandals and Envy Fish City
Qiaoqiao’s knowledge repeatedly exposed misconduct within the cultivation world. She helped uncover Elder Chen’s wrongdoing, earning thirty thousand Spirit Stones, and later led spectators to Elder Chang’s secret tryst. Madam Chang rewarded her with a promise to treat three people 17 39 41.
She also intervened when Fu Fengyuan was bullied and publicly revealed that Mu Ye was not Mu Liuyun’s biological son. During the subsequent Devil Cloud Sect invasion, she fought alongside her seniors before Bai Fu protected her from the Devil Master’s attack 36 38 45 50.
In Envy Fish City, Qiaoqiao used recorded evidence and Liu Xiu’s booklet to expose his affairs and plans to abduct people for the Spirit Transformation Cauldron. She pressed for the booklet to be sealed and investigated jointly by the four great immortal sects, rather than leaving its handling to one party 70 74 77 79.
Four-Sect Tournament
Originally attending as Ethereal Peak’s substitute, Qiaoqiao entered the tournament with complete confidence despite spectators dismissing her Foundation Establishment cultivation. Her opening draw placed her against Fairy Bihua, twentieth on the Azure Cloud Ranking 91.
During the competition, she helped free Yan’er from Brushstroke Immortal, exposed Bugua Zi, and turned Ning Xuan’s hungry spirit beasts against one another with food. In the final, she fought Liu Yu directly with Remnant Snow, broke through to Golden Core, and won with Ask the Heavenly Limit 94 96 103 109.
Her victories and revelations made her famous beyond the sect. Cultivators began treating her as a genuine divination prodigy, and her reputation even inspired sword cultivators to study divination 133.
Demon Realm and the Divine Sword
Qiaoqiao accompanied the group seeking to stop Xiao Tingyu’s wedding to the Demon King. While traveling in the Demon Realm, she appeared as a small cat demon, complete with pointed ears and a tail 144 146.
When the ancient demon lords Qiongqi and Hundun threatened the Human Realm, Qiaoqiao persuaded them to reconsider. She argued that Devil Qi threatened the Demon Realm and that conquering the Devil Realm offered territorial benefits that invading the Human Realm could not. Her intervention defused the impending war 160 161.
After a Divine Pillar collapsed, the divine sword emerged and flew directly into her arms. Its acquisition drew immediate attacks from cultivators who believed a Golden Core disciple had no right to possess it 163 164.
Past-Life Memories and the Demon God
Qiaoqiao initially denied being the divine maiden, calling herself a messenger of justice instead. Nevertheless, other cultivators sought to force that role upon her, while the Flowing Cloud Sect declared that it would protect her rather than surrender her to fight the Demon God 168.
Her increasingly vivid experiences included an apparently real illusion in which Bai Fu confessed his love, sheltered her behind a formation for forty-nine days, and transferred protective silver light into her before she lost consciousness. She later remembered her previous life: her seniors’ deaths, Bai Fu exhausting his true spirit, and her own long confinement within the Divine Pillar 169 170 172 191.
Qiaoqiao eventually chose to confront the Demon God for her seniors, Ethereal Peak, and the Flowing Cloud Sect—not for those demanding her sacrifice. Carrying the divine sword and Flowing Cloud Divine Lamp, she entered the mist with Fu Fengyuan and Yue Tingxi. They coordinated attacks against the Demon God, whose black-dragon form proved resistant even to their combined strikes 187 188 189.
A later scene places Qiaoqiao with Shen Ji, Wen Zhi, and Xiao Tingyu after a hundred-year interval. By then, she has recovered enough past-life memories to recognize Song Wuya’s phoenix as the bird that hatched from an egg she once found on Ethereal Peak 193.
Appearance
- Face and build: Clear, bright almond-shaped eyes, exceptionally fair skin, and a slender, delicate build 25 35.
- Hair: Black hair, worn with braids or pale-yellow ribbons 18 107 144.
- Clothing: Appears in pale yellow and apricot-colored robes; later wears a brown cloak when finding Bai Fu by the river 1 18 180.
- Demon Realm appearance: Pointed black cat ears with white tufts and a tail. Zi Yu interprets her as a black-and-white cat demon, though she has not seen an original animal form 144 146.
Personality
Qiaoqiao loves sleep, food, shopping, and watching scandals unfold. Her outwardly sweet, obedient behavior contrasts with a lively inner monologue full of irreverent observations and elaborate self-praise. Even her apparent exclusion from the tournament becomes, in her mind, proof that she is too strong to compete fairly 1 4 55 91.
Her laziness does not override her attachment to her seniors. Their suffering drives her to practice, confront bullies, and challenge powerful elders. She treats an offense against one member of Ethereal Peak as an offense against the entire peak 7 36 38.
She is quick-witted and mischievous, using apparently innocent questions to expose contradictions or deepen an opponent’s embarrassment. Her confidence persists in genuine danger: before facing the Demon God, she privately assumes he cannot possibly defeat her 14 77 187.
Qiaoqiao openly admires beauty, especially Bai Fu’s appearance, but also values kindness. Asked about a potential partner, she says they must be good-looking and treat her well, privately using her master as the standard for both 134.
Abilities & Skills
Revelatory Dreams and Audible Thoughts
Qiaoqiao’s dreams reveal hidden relationships, wrongdoing, and possible tragic futures. Certain people can also hear her unspoken reactions 1 4 7.
- Shen Ji, Xiao Tingyu, Wen Zhi, and Elder Ning hear information she does not necessarily speak aloud 4 13 18.
- Shen Ji can hear her thoughts even while observing her through a water mirror 25.
- Her knowledge is incomplete: her earliest dreams are fragmented and out of chronological order 4.
- She cannot obtain comparable “gossip” about herself, Bai Fu, or Song Wuya 55.
- Others’ belief that she possesses extraordinary divination is a reputation, not a confirmed description of her method 133.
Three Swords of High Antiquity
| Sword Form | Applications and Evidence |
|---|---|
| Slay the Star River | A comprehension-based technique taught by Shen Ji; usable even by beginners and especially effective against Devil Cultivators 8 9. |
| Descending Flower Rain | Cuts apart Teng Yaogui’s devil vines; later manifests as golden, petal-like streams of Sword Qi against the Demon God 137 189. |
| Ask the Heavenly Limit | The third strike, comprehended during the tournament final. Defeats Liu Yu and later serves as a delayed attack in a coordinated assault on the Demon God 109 188. |
- The forms improve sword intent as well as providing attacks 137.
- Repeated demonstrations by three miniature illusory selves give Qiaoqiao continuing, largely passive instruction 134.
- Her integrated sword control becomes precise enough to dislodge exactly ninety-nine plum petals without damaging them during the later illusion 170.
Protective Sword Intent
Bai Fu implanted a strand of sword intent in Qiaoqiao when her deficient Qi and weak meridians prevented cultivation. It automatically unfolds into a Protective Sword Formation when she is endangered 117.
- Wounds Ziling, blocks poisoned darts, and stops a curse character 7 93 103.
- Nourishes her meridians and improves her perception of sword intent, accelerating her progress once she begins serious study 109.
- Creates a protected domain within her State of Mind against darkness and resentment 117.
- Takes Bai Fu’s appearance within that mental domain; this manifestation is his sword intent rather than his physical presence 117.
- Can gradually become Qiaoqiao’s own through assimilation and advancing swordsmanship 117.
Investigation and Persuasion
- Evidence gathering: Records incriminating footage with the Zhaowu Mirror and preserves Liu Xiu’s booklet for investigation 70 79.
- Public questioning: Exposes inconsistencies in Elder Bing’s claims and challenges the Heavenly Secrets Pavilion’s failed investigation 77 131.
- Improvised tactics: Distracts Ning Xuan’s beasts with meat and induces them to fight over the final plate 103.
- Negotiation: Redirects Qiongqi and Hundun’s ambitions by explaining the different properties of Spiritual Qi, Yao Qi, and Devil Qi 160 161.
Awakening the Flowing Cloud Divine Lamp
According to the divine sword, Qiaoqiao alone can awaken the Flowing Cloud Divine Lamp to dispel the demonic mist 187.
- The cleared area is limited.
- She can bring at most two companions into the mist with her 187.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wooden sword — Her early practice weapon; capable of wounding Ziling when used with Slay the Star River 8 9.
- White plum branches — Gifts infused with Bai Fu’s sword intent. One forms a shield and destroys gu insects; once its sword intent is exhausted, it becomes an ordinary bare branch. Qiaoqiao calls it her “Plucking Leaves and Flying Flowers Sword” 10 76.
- Remnant Snow — A sword formerly used by Bai Fu, given to Qiaoqiao before the tournament final 108 109.
- Zhaowu Mirror — Reveals otherwise invisible traces of Spiritual Qi and can record images 70.
- Madam Chang’s white jade token — Entitles her to treatment for three people, with no expense spared 41.
- Divine Maiden’s Sword Scabbard — Obtained after the tournament; resonates with something within her and precedes her dream contact with the divine sword 116.
- Divine sword — Calls to her in dreams and ultimately flies into her arms when released from the Divine Pillar 116 152 163.
- Flowing Cloud Divine Lamp — Carried into the decisive battle to clear demonic mist 187 188.
- Defensive Law Treasures — Supplied by Xiao Tingyu; absorb a powerful blow from the Demon God but shatter in doing so 189.
Relationships
- Bai Fu / Immortal Venerable Wanghan — Master, childhood guardian, and source of her protective sword intent. Qiaoqiao feels safe with him and deeply admires him; he explicitly confesses romantic feelings during the later illusion, while recognizing that she has not yet fallen for him 100 117 169 170.
- Shen Ji — Eldest senior brother and first teacher of Slay the Star River. He repeatedly protects her, including following her into the Devil Realm 8 50 182.
- Xiao Tingyu — Second senior sister. Qiaoqiao seeks to avert her tragic future; Xiao Tingyu protects her and supplies treasures for the final battle 7 50 189.
- Wen Zhi — Third senior sister. Helps her prepare for the trial and checks that her rapid breakthrough has not destabilized her cultivation 22 24 114.
- Fu Fengyuan — Fourth senior brother. Qiaoqiao confronts his tormentors and encourages his recovery; he later accompanies her against the Demon God 36 38 41 188.
- A Xue — Bai Fu’s contracted crane and Qiaoqiao’s constant companion. Shares her enjoyment of leisure, fiercely defends her, and helps punish Fu Fengyuan’s bullies 1 4 7 38.
- Yue Tingxi — Trial partner and ally. Places second behind her in the secret realm and supplies Spiritual Qi during the fight against the Demon God 32 189.
- Elder Ning — An elder who hears her thoughts, recognizes her kindness beneath her mischief, and advises her when demotion threatens 1 4 17.
- Mu Liuyun — Sect master who secures her another chance at the trial and later refuses to let others force her into confronting the Demon God 17 168.
- Yue Liuqin — Rival whose mockery and interference culminate in a lost wager and public humiliation 24 26 32.
- Song Wuya — A figure Qiaoqiao instinctively distrusts and cannot read through her usual gossip knowledge. His coercion of Bai Fu in an illusion deepens her hostility 55 139.
- Phoenix — Initially rejected because of its association with Song Wuya. After recovering her memories, Qiaoqiao recognizes it as the phoenix that hatched on the day of her past-life death 98 193.
