Background / History

Wen Zhi grew up in the same village as Liu Xiu, who was more than ten years her senior. A timid child afraid of rejection, she watched the other children play rather than joining them. Her admiration for Liu Xiu began when he defended her from bullies, wiped the mud from her face, and offered to help her whenever she encountered trouble. After he entered the Profound Heaven Sect, she resolved to cultivate so that she could one day approach him openly as a friend 63.

As Wanghan’s third disciple, Wen Zhi spent most of her time secluded in pill research. Fairy Peilan was her only friend for a hundred years, but secretly profited from her medicines while spreading rumors that she was arrogant, ill-tempered, and difficult to approach. This helped establish her reputation among other disciples as an eccentric who made unwanted pills 18 19 21.

Wen Zhi later discovered that her paternal grandfather was the supposedly lost child of Glazed Sea leader Liu Xian and a mortal scholar surnamed Wen. The child had survived in a thousand-year-old mother clam before the scholar raised him away from the Glazed Sea’s conflicts. Wen Zhi accepted Liu Xian as her great-grandmother but chose not to become involved in her ancestors’ disputes, reaffirming her ambition to become a top alchemist 113.

Appearance

  • Build and complexion: Tall and slender, with a jade-like complexion and a face compared to a hibiscus 18.
  • Eyes and bearing: Shimmering eyes likened to autumn waters; a gentle, gracious demeanor 18.
  • Family resemblance: Resembles Liu Xian closely enough to attract Elder Bing’s attention and inspire Liu Xiu’s fixation on her as a substitute 61 113 130.
  • Scent: Carries a faint, fresh fragrance of medicinal herbs 168.

Personality

Wen Zhi is sincere, gentle, and initially reluctant to approach others. She recognizes that she easily becomes attached to people who show her kindness, making her vulnerable to manipulation. Qiaoqiao’s encouragement helps her question Peilan’s treatment of her and recognize that her unusual medicines have value even when ordinary buyers have no use for them 19 63.

Her kindness does not prevent her from setting firm boundaries once she understands someone’s intentions. She ends her friendship with Peilan, rejects Liu Xiu’s advances, and eventually watches his death without lingering affection. Rather than sacrifice herself for romance, she chooses her own life and the Dao of Alchemy 20 63 130 134.

Wen Zhi is particularly protective of Qiaoqiao: she shields her from Peilan’s accusations, gives her precious medicines, and discreetly investigates possible threats to her health. Her dedication to medicine can also verge on single-mindedness—after being rendered unconscious by demon mist, her first concern upon waking is the prescription she has finally found for Madam Rushui’s throat 20 21 134 139.

Abilities & Skills

Alchemy

Wen Zhi specializes in unconventional pills whose usefulness often depends on finding the right patient or buyer. Her Clear Void Pills, dismissed by Peilan as unsellable, are especially valuable to Immortal Venerable Changyun because of his unusual cultivation method 18 19.

Pill / Formula Effects and applications
Yawning Pill Makes the recipient yawn a hundred times within the time it takes an incense stick to burn 18.
Fragrance and Stench Pill Reverses the perception of pleasant and foul smells after ingestion 18.
Clear Void Pills Convert clear Qi into turbid Qi, making them useful to Changyun, who cultivates with turbid Qi 19.
Truth Pill Compels truthful speech. Resisting its effects through circulating cultivation causes abdominal pain; its effects eventually wear off 19 20.
High-grade Spirit Recovery Pills Heal severe injuries; Wen Zhi states that they can save someone who still has a breath remaining. She gives Qiaoqiao her only bottle, made from extremely precious ingredients 20 21.
Memory-enhancing pill Temporarily improves memory. Qiaoqiao experiences photographic recall for a month and memorizes the entire Compendium of Spirit Herbs 24.
Beauty Nourishing Pills Used for beauty and nourishment; Wen Zhi gives her supply to Qiaoqiao 80.
Envy Fish City plague formula Cures the city’s epidemic and earns Wen Zhi public recognition as the “Miracle-Hand Alchemist” 85.
Pill for Xiao Tingyu Fully restores Xiao Tingyu’s awareness after the Pure Sage Pearl has partially weakened a controlling formation 155.

Medical Diagnosis and Treatment

Wen Zhi uses pulse examination, medicinal research, and tailored prescriptions to treat both humans and demons 80 114 139.

  • Epidemic investigation: Connects Qiaoqiao’s observations to the possibility that discarded pill liquid contaminated Envy Fish City’s water or soil 80.
  • Cultivation monitoring: Checks Qiaoqiao after a sudden breakthrough to ensure that her realm has not become unstable 114.
  • Demon medicine: Finds a prescription for Madam Rushui’s throat after earlier spirit medicines prove incompatible with her demonic constitution 139.
  • Control diagnosis: Identifies a formation as the likely cause of Xiao Tingyu’s unresponsive behavior and researches how to break its influence 150 152.
  • Limits: A healthy pulse does not explain Qiaoqiao’s visible “Darkening Value,” despite Wen Zhi consulting numerous medical texts 134.

Spirit-Herb Identification

Wen Zhi knows every spirit herb in the Flowing Cloud Sect and teaches Qiaoqiao to identify them for the secret realm trial 22.

  • Explains different herbs’ identifying characteristics and approximate trial-point values 22.
  • Recognizes a seventh-grade Yang-Restoring Grass near Hidden Plum Peak, where she had previously found nothing above fifth grade 22.
  • Identifies the golden toad’s skin as valuable pill-refining material 130.

Saint Pill Research

Wen Zhi determines that the supposed Saint Pill is not a shortcut to ascension, but an essence condensed from large quantities of medicinal liquid in the Heaven-Melting Cauldron 187.

  • Finds its ingredients similar to those of the Immortality Pill, but with greater potency 187.
  • Recognizes it as condensed resentment capable of absorbing resentful thoughts and reversing a Slaughter Dao Heart 192.
  • Establishes that two identical pills are needed to dispel the resentment and killing aura suppressing Bai Fu’s vitality 192.
  • Warns that revival also requires rare spiritual treasures of specific ages, some believed lost from the three realms 192 193.

Unusual Perception and Techniques

  • Hearing Qiaoqiao’s thoughts: Receives information Qiaoqiao does not speak aloud, including Peilan’s fraud, Liu Xiu’s intentions, and her own ancestry 18 19 63 113.
  • Seeing the Darkening Value: Observes “Qiaoqiao, Darkening Value: 55” above her junior sister’s head 130.
  • Silencing Technique: Silences Liu Xiu after his transformation into a paper character 84.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Pure Sage Pearl — Given to her by Xiao Tingyu during the Envy Fish City epidemic. Neutralizes poison, wards off evil, and produces a protective barrier large enough to cover Wen Zhi and Qiaoqiao 79 80 155.
  • Storage ring used to imprison Liu Xiu — Holds his bound paper body separately from her belongings. He later breaks its seal and escapes 84 127.
  • Borrowed invisibility cloak — A Xiao Household Law Treasure lent by Xiao Tingyu; conceals Wen Zhi and Qiaoqiao while they investigate Liu Xiu and Elder Bing 65.
  • Saint Pill research sample — Entrusted to her by Qiaoqiao; becomes central to her proposed method of reviving Bai Fu 187 192.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Exposing Fairy Peilan

Qiaoqiao’s thoughts reveal that Peilan sold Wen Zhi’s Clear Void Pills for 100,000 Spirit Stones, returned only 100, and told Changyun that their alchemist was dead. When confronted, Peilan continues belittling Wen Zhi’s work and discouraging her from contacting Changyun herself 19.

Wen Zhi gives Peilan a Truth Pill disguised as a Beauty Nourishing Pill. She then supports a bluff that Peilan has been poisoned, obtaining a public confession before revealing that no poison was involved and ending their friendship. The confession clears Wen Zhi’s reputation, attracts customers, and encourages her to consider making new friends 20 21.

Saving Envy Fish City

Wen Zhi volunteers to examine the epidemic’s victims, but Elder Bing refuses to lend her a Water-Avoiding Pearl. Liu Xiu later offers his own, only for Qiaoqiao’s thoughts to warn that he would steal credit for Wen Zhi’s cure and draw her into a fatal relationship. Wen Zhi refuses his offer and resolves to pursue alchemy rather than die for him 62 63.

After witnessing more of Liu Xiu’s conduct, she recognizes how little she truly knew him. Protected by the Pure Sage Pearl, she examines patients and develops a cure. During her research, the resurrected Liu Xiu attempts to kill her and turn her into a puppet, but Qiaoqiao’s companion A-Qi stops him 65 79 80 82.

The townspeople publicly thank Wen Zhi as their savior and call her the “Miracle-Hand Alchemist.” Unlike the future Qiaoqiao foresaw, Wen Zhi receives credit for her own formula. Changyun also begins trading with her directly after learning the truth about Peilan 85 93.

Protecting Her Fellow Disciples

After noticing Qiaoqiao’s Darkening Value, Wen Zhi searches medical texts and checks her pulse under the pretext of showing her a hairpin. She finds Qiaoqiao physically healthy but remains unable to explain the warning 130 134.

She then joins Qiaoqiao and Fu Fengyuan in traveling to the Demon Realm to rescue Xiao Tingyu. Despite being briefly incapacitated by demon mist, she helps infiltrate the palace, diagnoses Xiao Tingyu’s condition, and secretly administers the pill that restores her awareness before the wedding confrontation 135 139 149 152 155.

Finding a Way to Revive Bai Fu

Following Bai Fu’s sacrifice, Wen Zhi interrupts the group’s mourning with a possible means of saving him. His true spirit has not dispersed, leaving a thread of life, but lingering resentment suppresses his vitality. Her Saint Pill research provides a way to remove that obstruction, and a second identical pill is found beside the Divine Pillar 192 193.

Wen Zhi lists the additional ingredients needed, privately estimating that collecting them could take at least three thousand years. A hundred years later, she and Xiao Tingyu visit Qiaoqiao together 193.
