| Hardening Ability awakened | 5 | Awakened the previous day. His ability coats his body in hard metal, strengthening offense and defense; teachers regard it as highly promising. |

| Full-strength semifinal performance | 25 | Reveals strength described as twice that shown in the previous day's spar. His hardened defenses reflect the force of Xu Jintang's blows, numbing her hands and feet. This reveals previously withheld strength rather than a confirmed breakthrough. |
Background / History
Rivalry and First Challenge
Xu Bohan resented Xu Jintang's repeated successes during the year following her submission of a blank examination paper. He had also lost to her in the previous selection for practical combat class representative. After awakening Hardening, he saw her apparently unimpressive support ability as an opportunity to defeat her and reclaim the position 5 6.
With Huang Binhan's approval, he challenged her before the class. He initially broke through Domain Slow by concentrating mental power, but immediately committed to another attack without guarding against a second activation. Xu Jintang strengthened her domain, moved behind him, and restrained his neck to win. Xu Bohan protested that their abilities made the match unfair, but Huang Binhan identified his lowered guard as the decisive mistake 6.
Winter Training and Team Assessment
Xu Bohan joined Huang Binhan's winter special training and noticed Xu Jintang's absence. By its conclusion, his team had killed three first-tier demonic beasts, and he appeared pleased with his progress 7 9.
He subsequently formed an assessment team with Yao Wenna and Gao Boshan. During simulated combat, they encountered a first-tier beast eight minutes after entering and defeated it in under ten minutes of fighting. Although they earned early dismissal, Xu Jintang's team completed its own mission substantially faster 12 13.
His team continued training in the simulated battlefield, including late sessions before the tournament semifinals. Watching Xu Jintang's victories made both him and Yao Wenna increasingly wary of her abilities 14 15 21 23.
Pre-Semifinal Duel
After the two teams drew each other for the semifinals, Xu Bohan deliberately knocked Xu Jintang's meal onto the floor and accused her of relying on Song Tianqi. The provocation was part of his team's plan to uncover her hidden capabilities before their official match 22 23 24.
During the resulting duel, his metal coating stopped her crossbow bolts, but she exploited his unprotected head and repeatedly struck his nose. He exhausted his mental power after half an hour, while she retained more than half of hers. Both had withheld some strength, and his team revised its tactics afterward 24.
Semifinal Defeat
His team's strategy was to separate their opponents: Gao Boshan would hypnotize Song Tianqi, Yao Wenna would occupy Xu Jintang, and Xu Bohan—the team's strongest combatant—would quickly eliminate Song Duoduo before helping defeat Xu Jintang 26.
Xu Bohan shattered Song Duoduo's datura flowers and offered her the choice of leaving voluntarily or being forced out. After she agreed to leave and turned away, he punched her from behind, knocking her out of the arena and seriously injuring her. He claimed he had feared an ambush. Huang Binhan warned that another such incident would cost his team the match, while Dean Wang condemned the conduct 25.
He then blocked Xu Jintang from reaching Gao Boshan and initially drove her back with his stronger metal defenses. Xu Jintang released her hidden dragon-blood power and punched him out of the arena, leaving him coughing blood and clutching his chest. Yao Wenna and Gao Boshan surrendered, ending the semifinal in defeat 25 26.
Joint Entrance Examination Journey
Xu Bohan later participated in the additional assessment before the joint entrance examination. Song Duoduo observed that both he and Yao Wenna remained in the combat zone longer than she did. She also reported that Yao Wenna had fallen out with him after his attack on her 34.
Personality
Xu Bohan is competitive and deeply sensitive to being overshadowed by Xu Jintang. He initially treats her support classification as proof that she should no longer lead practical combat class, then protests the fairness of their duel when she defeats him. His anger also makes him vulnerable to her taunts 5 6 24.
He nevertheless trains persistently and learns from combat experience. By their second post-awakening duel, he is less reckless and more deliberate about countering her domain. His willingness to provoke opponents and attack a withdrawing classmate, however, alienates spectators, draws criticism from academy staff, and damages his relationship with Yao Wenna 15 23 24 25 34.
Abilities & Skills
Metal Hardening
Xu Bohan coats his body in hard metal to increase both attack power and defense 5.
- Projectile defense: Deflects refined-iron bolts from Xu Jintang's ruby sleeve crossbow 24.
- Close-combat reinforcement: Strengthens his fists and body for direct exchanges 24 25.
- Force reflection: At his semifinal output, his hardened coating reflects the impact of Xu Jintang's attacks back into her limbs 25.
- Coverage limitation: Despite the ability's general description as full-body coating, his head remains unprotected during their pre-semifinal duel 5 24.
- Endurance limitation: Maintaining and using his ability consumes mental power; exhaustion decides his second duel with Xu Jintang 24.
Hardened Iron Fist
A named close-range attack that covers his fists in hard steel before he strikes 6.
- Used in charging and leaping attacks 6.
- Depends on reaching his opponent, leaving him susceptible to movement restriction and evasive counterattacks 6 24.
Mental-Power Resistance
Xu Bohan can concentrate mental power to forcibly break through Domain Slow 6 24.
- Successfully escapes its initial restraint during his first post-awakening duel 6.
- Stronger domain output requires greater expenditure to overcome; escaping once does not prevent Xu Jintang from applying it again 6.

- Song Duoduo — Opposing semifinal competitor whom he seriously injures after she agrees to leave the arena 25.
- Song Tianqi — Tournament opponent who defends Xu Jintang against his provocations and condemns his attack on Song Duoduo 23 25.
