Background / History

Transmigration and Return to Basketball

Shirasawa awakens in the life of Yo Aoki, a wealthy family’s eldest son with a reputation for skipping school and fighting. After recognizing the world of Slam Dunk through a magazine, he accepts his new identity and resolves to conquer the nation through basketball before considering a return to China 272 273.

His basketball knowledge predates his transmigration: he previously received professional training and remembers players, tactics, and events from the manga. Memories of illness also make him particularly protective of his new opportunity to live actively and play basketball 274 276.

As a third-year at Eda Middle School, he joins the basketball team despite captain Naoto Shirota’s objections. Coach Hisaishi accepts him primarily to discipline him, assigning scoreboard duty and punishing conditioning rather than game time. Aoki persists because developing his new body matters more to him than playing immediately 273 274.

He later doubles Hisaishi’s prescribed workload, supplements it with aerobic and flexibility exercises, and joins Fire Phoenix after defeating Yamada three baskets to none. Alongside training, he raises his grades enough to enter Takezato High School with Shirota 274 275 276.

Becoming Takezato’s Ace

Aoki earns A grades in all four of Takezato’s initial basketball tests. After joining the official first-year roster, he dominates a scrimmage against the second-years through three-point shooting, steals, interior defense, and a powerful dunk. His performance gives the upperclassmen renewed hope of reaching nationals 277 278.

He also begins reshaping Takezato’s offense. Working first with Tomoya Imamura, he introduces pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop variations, then recommends more passing, movement, and screens to compensate for the team’s weaker individual talent 281 282 286.

In a practice game against Shoyo, Aoki leads a late comeback. His final basket ties the game rather than winning it because the referee rules it a two-pointer. Afterward, he records both the team’s weaknesses and his own shortcomings in a notebook 290.

Street Attacks and Recovery

Aoki intervenes when a knife-wielding robber attacks a schoolgirl. He knocks the robber down with his basketball, disarms him, and subdues him before the police arrive. The officers identify the attacker as the “Wolf of the Moonlit Night,” who had also stabbed convenience-store clerk Asatani 280.

The rescued girl is connected to the Ichibishi Group. When its representatives ask Aoki to keep the incident private and offer him an envelope, he agrees to discretion but rejects the payment and their condescending attitude 281.

A later confrontation with Mitsui, Ryu, Matsumoto, and their companions leaves Aoki with a knife wound across his forearm. Mitsui warns him of the attack, and Aoki subsequently lets him leave before the police arrive. He also withholds Matsumoto’s involvement, while warning Matsumoto not to confuse restraint with weakness 291 292.

Although initially told he would be unable to play for about a month, Aoki recovers quickly. Coach Akai restricts him to supervised footwork until he can resume full training 292.

Prefectural Qualifiers

Against Ryonan, Aoki announces himself with a dunk over Jun Uozumi that bends the hoop. He pressures Sendoh defensively and later helps Takezato exploit Uozumi’s poor free-throw shooting through deliberate fouls, rebounds, and fast-break three-pointers. Despite Aoki’s individual performance, Takezato loses 297 302 305 314.

Against Shohoku, he takes charge of the ball, targets Akagi’s limited offensive variety, and uses Takezato’s screens and spacing to create chances. In the final seconds, Sakuragi puts Shohoku ahead 70–68. Aoki’s answering dunk comes after the buzzer and is disallowed 306 309 310 313.

Aoki subsequently challenges Kainan through physical drives, dunks, and playmaking against Shinichi Maki. A deformed right ring finger forces him off the court, but he persuades Akai to let him return for Mizuki’s final game. The injury damages his shooting accuracy, leaving him to contribute through passing, movement, and steals 316 320 321 322.

At the end of the qualifiers, Aoki is selected among Kanagawa’s top five players alongside Maki, Akagi, Sendoh, and Rukawa 324.

Captaincy and Team Rebuilding

After the summer qualifiers, Aoki helps Sakuragi with shooting and core-strength training under Coach Anzai. Returning to Takezato as captain, he evaluates eight newcomers with Shirota and identifies Terashima Ya’s all-around ability and Akio Wakamoto’s exceptional speed 328 329.

Akai approves Aoki’s “Seven-Nine-Zero” playing-style proposal, built around coordinated movement, cuts, shooting, and passing. Aoki explicitly recognizes that Takezato cannot reach nationals by relying on him alone 329.

Kanagawa Representative Team

Aoki advises Anzai on breaking Sannoh’s full-court press, then travels to Hiroshima to watch Shohoku’s victory. He later joins the combined Kanagawa squad preparing for the Autumn National Sports Festival 332 335 339.

During the training period, Kainan offers him a school place, living allowance, and guaranteed admission to Kainan University. He refuses because he wants a sense of belonging at Takezato 342.

In the warm-up against Chiba’s representatives, Aoki replaces the injured Kiyota, dunks over dirty-playing Akama, and subsequently draws an offensive foul by exaggerating Akama’s attempted elbow strike 346 347.

Kanagawa travels to Osaka on October 6, with Aoki rooming with Rukawa. Although he is not among the announced tournament starters, he starts the second half against Shizuoka with instructions to defend and distribute without scoring. His repeated steals and assists force Shizuoka to change ball handlers 349 352.

Appearance

  • Tall build: His height is repeatedly remarked upon, though no exact measurement is provided 273 280 344.
  • Former delinquent styling: Originally has dyed blond hair and earrings 273.
  • Basketball-focused makeover: Dyes his hair black, adopts a crew cut, and throws away his earrings after joining Eda’s team 273.
  • On-court mouthguard: Wears a red-rimmed mouthguard during the Kainan game 316.

Personality

Aoki is unusually disciplined. He continues exhausting training without the promise of playing time, maintains his basketball schedule while preparing for entrance examinations, and volunteers for extra practice even during Kanagawa’s severe training camp. Eventually, Maki is the only player still able to keep up with those additional sessions 273 276 342.

His confidence often becomes theatrical arrogance. He calls himself a full-fledged star, promises to crush opponents, and deliberately provokes Kainan to disrupt its composure. Nevertheless, watching Sendoh play forces him to acknowledge that prior-life experience alone will not let him dominate high-school basketball 274 291 297 317.

He is generous with instruction and proud of others’ improvement, even when they are opponents. He teaches Sakuragi because he admires his talent—and privately remembers him as a childhood idol—and briefly catches himself looking pleased when Sakuragi scores against Takezato 285 310 344.

His loyalty can become recklessness. He insists on returning against Kainan because Mizuki’s final game matters to him, despite the pain and risk to his finger. His attachment to Takezato also outweighs Kainan’s substantial recruitment offer 322 342.

  • Passing: Finds cutters, throws alley-oops and long outlet passes, and creates openings by drawing multiple defenders 309 310 335 352.
  • Opponent-specific plans: Targets Uozumi’s free throws and Akagi’s importance to Shohoku’s cohesion 302 317.
  • Scouting: Writes reports, keeps a notebook of weaknesses, and evaluates recruits’ practical strengths 286 290 329.
  • Psychological tactics: Uses taunts to provoke opponents and foul-drawing theatrics against Akama 317 347.

  • A school-year inconsistency appears in his introduction to Asatani: he calls himself a second-year, although his enrollment and later class reference identify him as a first-year 276 314 329.
