Background / History

Guardian of Flying Peak

Xiluo governed Flying Peak, an isolated mountain near human villages. Unlike most mountain and river gods, who avoided the complications of dealing with humans, she was intensely curious about them 2.

A thousand years before Li Boyang’s birth, she had been a companion of Wu Yao, the Witch of the Huai River, whom she called her elder sister. After Wu Yao’s death, Xiluo remained Flying Peak’s visible guardian, while Kunwu—the Sea-Calming Cauldron Wu Yao left behind—guarded it from the shadows 73 167 345.

Her loyalty extended to defending Wu Yao’s remains. When Ruifu demanded the corpse, Xiluo confronted him in her crimson leopard form. She later tried to kill Ruifu herself before Li Boyang could deliver the final blow, knowing that the killer would inherit his curse and Sha Qi 6 7.

Protecting Li Boyang’s Birth

Xiluo witnessed a golden sword defeat a strange old man and enter Chen Yun’s unborn child. Initially treating the encounter as a curiosity, she became concerned when Chen Yun weakened under the demands of carrying a divine fetus 2.

What changed her attitude was the sword pellet’s attempt to reduce its demands on its mother and protect her from danger. Xiluo subsequently helped Li Boyang come into the world and secretly supplied meat to Chen Yun’s household 19 22.

Black Cloud Marsh and the Roaring Heaven Clan

The old man’s death left an evil ghost in Black Cloud Marsh. When its expanding mist began affecting even her emotions, Xiluo withdrew and sought Li Boyang’s help. She gave him a Spirit Rhinoceros Horn so they could communicate 15 16 19.

Following Li Boyang’s explanation of heated air currents, she raised the temperature of a valley pass to create an updraft that pushed the mist back. During the later assault on the Ghost King, she used a temporary explosive increase in strength, but her effectiveness fell sharply once the initial burst ended 31 34 39.

When Li Boyang opposed the Roaring Heaven Clan, Xiluo helped secure divine support for his weather-changing ritual. Despite her complaints, she persuaded the Gods of the Hundred Lands to establish the One Hundred and Eight Earthly Baleful Nodes Circulating and Yang-Raising Grand Formation 66 357.

Cultivation and Protection of Yunmeng Marsh

Under Li Boyang’s cultivation system, Xiluo developed far beyond her original reliance on fire. She manifested her Wu Yao-shaped Primordial Spirit, petrified Hei Chi, and resisted the ghost gods struggling against their seals at Ghost God Cliff 169 171.

Her protectiveness became especially apparent when Kunwu considered leaving. Refusing to let him sacrifice himself as the Sea-Calming Cauldron, she ordered the God-Binding Cord to keep him on Flying Peak—even if protecting him meant conflict with Great Xia 345 357.

After the expedition to Guixu, she began deliberately practicing new skills, including close combat performed through her feather robe’s ribbons. She also secretly advanced to Path of Spirit Perfection 415 440.

Independent Dao Proving

Xiluo began bringing newborn gods of the Hundred Lands Mountain Range under a common order, resolving problems for them in exchange for submission. Privately, she told Pan Hu that she was preparing to achieve Dao Proving 497.

She later practiced Attaining the Dao in Dreams. One unusually rewarding dream brought her to the threshold of Refining Spirit and Returning to Emptiness, after which she planned to withdraw to the Six Desire Heavens to digest her gains 557 567 573.

Her attempt to become the leader of divine spirits attracted opposition from beings whose own paths would be constrained by her authority. During the attempt, she discovered that the Heavenly Mandate had chosen her as its agent after failing to influence Li Boyang. She struck her own Primordial Spirit with the Power of the Five Punishments, broke its control, and entered the Yunmeng Jade Pool Realm to attain her own Dao 587 592 594.

The Heavenly Mandate’s will was separately reset into a demon king called the Queen Mother of the West. This entity is distinct from Xiluo, who also bears that title in later eras 594 674.

Teaching Across Time

Xiluo took Luo Lan and Xiao Ling as cultivation students partly out of competitiveness: she wanted to win against the person behind their connected misfortunes. She recognized enough potential in Luo Lan to consider him capable of becoming a Dao Assimilator 674 675 676.

She also taught Jinhong divination after Goddess Milun’s death. Although she explained that his mother’s death was a crucial historical turning point, she could not persuade him to abandon revenge. After spending five hundred years with him, she carried deep guilt over watching him descend into the Evil Dao despite her warnings 702 706.

In the newborn universe, Xiluo helped establish Yuan Qi and stabilize the world with her major treasures. She then used dozens of Law Treasures, including the Heaven-Overturning Seal, to flatten and compact the ground 741.

Dao of Immortals and Li Boyang’s Departure

Fearing that Li Boyang’s preparations for transcendence would destroy him, Xiluo allied with Wangshu, Jinjiao, and others. Her plan to prove the Dao of Immortals included sharing authority with other Dao Proving Ones and gathering enough strength to stop him 940 943.

She eventually chose Li Boyang’s side despite her fear of losing him. At their final farewell, she accepted his revelation that he came from another world and asked him to promise that he would return 978 979.

His departure erased her memories of him. She claimed the shattered Stele of the Great Dao as the “Treasure Distribution Rock,” while civilization continued through successive epochs. In the later Heavenly Court Epoch, Li Boyang returned, restoring the Dao Proving Ones’ memories and reuniting with her 979.

Appearance

Xiluo shifts between feline, human, and half-human divine forms. Her habitual crimson coloration remains visible across several transformations 2 169 325.

  • Wildcat form: A russet or scarlet mountain cat, small enough to perch on roof beams or lie on Li Boyang’s head 2 19 345.
  • Leopard form: A crimson leopard commonly accompanied by flames and fiery clouds 15 313.
  • Ominous Deity form: Half-human and half-beast, with loose crimson hair, exposed fangs, sharp claws, and a leopard tail that lashes like a steel whip. Its face resembles Wu Yao 169.
  • Primordial Spirit: Initially appears exactly like the Goddess of War enshrined in Flying Peak’s temple. Later manifests with Xiluo’s own appearance but markedly greater wisdom and composure 169 440.
  • Human form: Resembles an immortal maiden in her feather robe, though her rough posture and unconcerned behavior initially contrast with that appearance 439.
  • Later public bearing: After Dao Proving, she becomes more conscious of her image and rarely reveals her ferocious Ominous Deity form unless truly angered 977.

Personality

Xiluo is curious, outspoken, sharp-tongued, and easily drawn to an entertaining spectacle. She freely admits to laziness, dislikes prolonged study, and initially struggles with human terminology badly enough for Li Jingshu to call her “half-illiterate” 19 90 151 674.

Her kindness is selective rather than indiscriminate. Early on, she refuses to retrieve Deception Rabbit because she considers him an outsider and has no personal interest in his trouble. Once she accepts someone as her own, however, she is fiercely persistent in protecting them 151 345 357.

She is particularly sensitive to being underestimated. Wu Luo’s suggestion that she needed Law Treasures to challenge him provoked her into attacking with her own claws and Qi of the Five Punishments. Her competitive streak also influences her decision to take disciples 340 675.

Although she repeatedly claims to have accepted Wu Yao’s death, traces of grief and hope remain. Li Boyang recognizes that she cannot entirely suppress the desire for her elder sister’s return 416.

Her ambition comes in bursts. Guixu inspires serious training, and Dao Proving drives sustained preparation, but she later returns to enjoying the present rather than laboriously rewriting history. Even so, she tries to make her Elixir of Immortality widely available instead of keeping it secret 415 497 600 662 927.

Abilities & Skills

Flame Control

Xiluo’s original divine nature favors Flame Primordial Qi, allowing her to command fire and fiery clouds 403.

  • Burns corrupted beasts with flames combined with claw attacks 15.
  • Heats terrain to create air currents capable of redirecting Black Cloud Marsh’s mist 31.
  • Produces flames hot enough to evaporate lake water instantly during her fight with Wu Luo 339.
  • Temporarily amplifies her combat strength through an explosive technique; its effectiveness declines sharply after the initial burst 34 39.

Primordial Spirit and Divinity Mask

Her Primordial Spirit and Cognitive Spirit combine spiritual capacity with accumulated thought and memory. This allows her to manifest Wu Yao as Xiluo understands her, rather than resurrecting the original Wu Yao 169 440.

  • Reproduces her remembered impressions of Wu Yao’s knowledge and abilities 169.
  • Can express knowledge that the original Wu Yao lacked, provided Xiluo believes Wu Yao could have understood it 169.
  • Uses a Divinity Mask born under Wu Yao’s name to exceed her ordinary capabilities 440.
  • Does not replace Xiluo’s identity; she explicitly states that she remains herself 440.

Premonition and Heavenly Mandate Divine Abilities

Despite initially disliking divination study, Xiluo develops powerful perception of fate, history, and hidden circumstances 90 169 674.

  • Uses Premonition to reveal the past as well as the future, including in her petrification of Hei Chi 169.
  • Can sense attention directed at her through her identity or name 674.
  • Teaches that Premonition is needed to judge whether a divination is accurate 702.
  • With divination and a compass, can ordinarily perceive roughly one thousand years into the past and future; more distant investigation is obscured and dangerous 662.
  • Her predictions are not grounds for blind trust. Li Boyang warns her against relying entirely on fate, citing Wu Yao’s death 573.

Ominous Deity Combat

Her half-human divine form combines physical strength, flight, claws, and the Power of the Five Punishments 169 340.

  • Matches much of Wu Luo’s strength and toughness despite being considerably smaller 340.
  • Uses aerial hit-and-run attacks, claw projections, and Qi of the Five Punishments gathered on her claws 340.
  • Controls the Baleful Force of the Five Punishments remotely through Primordial Spirit-derived power 340.
  • Later combines direct attacks with feather-robe ribbons used as numerous striking arms 407 415.

Movement and Divine Travel

  • Fiery clouds: Her customary flight method; crimson leopard form allows particularly fast travel 313 465.
  • Shrinking the Earth to an Inch: Becomes proficient enough to receive Li Boyang’s praise 440.
  • Shrine travel: Moves a thousand li almost instantly through her own shrines and temples at relatively low cost. Its practical range is limited by her faith’s spread within the Hundred Lands Mountain Range 480.
  • The Ends of the Earth Within Reach: Uses this Divine Ability to bring her Primordial Spirit to Mount Kunlun during a dream battle 567.

Dream Cultivation

Xiluo practices Attaining the Dao in Dreams to accumulate experience, recruit deities, and prepare for Dao Proving 567 573 591.

  • Can stop and rewind her dreams, though inhabitants who awaken to their true circumstances can repeatedly oppose her 567.
  • Adds divine names to the Jade Pool Heavenly Book through her dream experiences 573.
  • Rehearses the conceptual backlash associated with becoming leader of divine spirits 591.
  • Reshapes Jade Pool Heaven so that her thoughts and will determine its local rules and environment 582.
  • Recognizes and treats an aftereffect of a dream becoming real and influencing reality 555.

Law Techniques and Immortality Cultivation

Xiluo distinguishes cultivated Divine Abilities from Law Techniques, which she can use by borrowing the corresponding gods’ power 440.

  • Uses clouds, rain, and sweet dew to clear the lingering ice and fire Sha Qi left by Ruifu 7.
  • Initially lacks common mountain-god techniques such as Mountain-Moving and Earth Escape 224.
  • Cultivates Peaches of Immortality and pursues wider production of the Elixir of Immortality 600.
  • Faces severe production limits: even the lowest-grade peaches require three thousand years to ripen and constant watering with spirit milk and Jade Pool water 600.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spirit Rhinoceros Horn — Gives it to Li Boyang to enable communication. Using it consumes substantial vital Qi while his Sword Pill is separated from his body 15 19.
  • Celestial Maiden’s Feather Robe — Originates from Yin Fei’s robe and grants Guhuo Bird and Night-Wandering Woman forms. Li Boyang adds yin-yang markings to reduce its effects on the wearer’s mind; it also possesses a cleaning function 325 326 820.
  • Feather-robe ribbons — Extend like numerous arms for striking, binding, and sealing. They are described as another form of the God-Binding Cord 407 415.
  • Baleful Force of the Five Punishments — A remotely controlled weapon used in aerial combat and large-scale attacks 340 407.
  • Hairpin / jade sword — Her hairpin transforms into a jade sword; a later stroke tears through the starry sky and Milky Way 949 977.
  • Divine Firmament Sword — Wields it while confronting hostile Dao Proving Ones 977.
  • Jade Pool Heavenly Book — Records gods’ names and helps gather divine support for her Dao Proving 573 582.
  • Diagram of Mountains, Rivers, and the Land; Taiji Diagram — Uses them with the Jade Pool Heavenly Book to establish Yuan Qi and stabilize the newborn world 741.
  • Heaven-Overturning Seal — One of dozens of Law Treasures used to flatten and compact the newborn world’s ground 741.
  • Bagua Compass — Uses it when beginning Jinhong’s divination lessons 702.
  • Treasure Distribution Rock — Claims the shattered Stele of the Great Dao under this name after losing her memories of Li Boyang 979.

Relationships

  • Li Boyang — Her ward, cultivation guide, longtime companion, and frequent target of complaints. She helps bring him into the world and becomes his first Dao protector; their closeness also produces recurring conflict over his secrecy and dangerous ambitions 19 276 943 966 979.
  • Wu Yao / Witch of the Huai River — Her deceased elder sister and former companion. Xiluo guards her legacy and models her Primordial Spirit on her, while acknowledging that the original Wu Yao cannot return 73 169 416.
  • Chen Yun — Knows her from childhood, when she found the lost girl near a river and tricked her out of candied hawthorn. Later secretly supplies food during her pregnancy 22.
  • Li Jingshu — A familiar companion with whom she exchanges insults and threats. Despite their teasing, Xiluo objects when Li Boyang permits her to enter a dangerous gorge 151 480.
  • Li Xi — Greets her affectionately, brings presents, and offers to obtain a children’s bicycle for her. Their reunion contrasts with Xiluo’s earlier wariness of the girl’s unusual background 416 556.
  • Kunwu — Fellow guardian of Flying Peak and a surviving connection to Wu Yao. Xiluo refuses to let him leave to sacrifice himself as the Sea-Calming Cauldron 345 357.
  • Rain Master Shang Yang — Friend who distinguishes his relationship with Xiluo from his separate history with Wu Yao 183.
  • Heaven-Eroding Lord — Blames him for betraying Wu Yao and indirectly causing her death. They remain antagonistic, though he later rescues her from Hao Jun’s remnant body 73 110 408.
  • Luo Lan and Xiao Ling — Cultivation students she takes on while investigating the forces behind their misfortunes 674 675 676.
  • Jinhong — Divination student and companion across several hundred years. His pursuit of revenge and descent into the Evil Dao leave her with lasting regret 702 706 726.
  • Lü Yan — Protects him from would-be masters and helps him prove the Dao of Sword Immortals, completing her Dao of Immortals 851 940.
  • Wangshu and Jinjiao — Allies in her effort to consolidate the Dao of Immortals and prevent Li Boyang from pursuing a potentially fatal transcendence 940 943.
  • Lu Huaijin and Wu Zhen — Distrusts both as dangerous influences; Li Boyang considers some of her hostility prejudiced 416 439.
