Background / History

Mountain Spirit and Trader

Before meeting Li Boyang, Deception Rabbit wandered among human states, matching wits with humans and gods. In the Hundred Lands Mountain Range, he became notorious for talking incessantly and provoking other spirits. He claimed that stronger creatures drove him away on sight, while weaker ones avoided him entirely 12 372.

He approached Big Girl after watching her gather rare medicinal herbs, copied her appearance, and proposed trading meat or Guifang currency for her finds. Although cautious enough to remain ten paces away, he soon became friendly with her and Li Boyang. He recognized the infant's unusual Life Primordial Qi and dangerous Sha Qi rather than mistaking him for a defenseless child 11 12.

His access to books, ores, and unusual materials concealed a deeper connection to Guifang: under the identity of the Deceiver, he was the Tufang Clan's sole personally acknowledged priest. He had received neither the clan's divine power nor formal Guifang training, and the kingdom and Gods of the Five Directions did not recognize his appointment 135 147 149.

Saving Nüman

Deception Rabbit had known Granny, later identified as the Spring God Nüman, for decades. When she confronted Guifang's slave-catching forces, he investigated despite suspecting that Xiao'e was maneuvering him into helping. He subsequently declared himself willing to oppose the Roaring Heaven Clan regardless of whether Granny remained alive 59 64.

After finding her shattered corpse, he used Xiluo's Silk Fur Robe to restore its appearance for burial. The robe did not revive her. He also urged the bereaved mountain folk to seek help in Gao Village Town and Li Household Village instead of following their families in death 69.

Determined to retrieve Nüman's captive divine soul, he enlisted Li Boyang's help against Guifang. Together they infiltrated its ancestral shrine and stole the sealed jar holding her. Deception Rabbit protected the vessel through the ensuing divine battle and refused to surrender it to the Spider Queen afterward 74 77 86.

His efforts eventually produced a self-aware pale-green ring of light that behaved like a newborn and clung to him. Unsure whether this being was truly the old Granny, he hid her existence from Li Boyang out of concern that she might become the subject of dangerous research. Xiluo discovered the reborn Nüman and intervened 121.

Defender of the Mountain Range

At Flying Peak, Deception Rabbit studied under Li Boyang while guarding Nüman's rebirth. He concentrated on the Breathing Method and Thousand Transformations rather than attempting to master every technique available. His progress allowed him to resist the Green Wood Clan's attempt to take him back to Guifang, though his uncontrolled Black Dragon transformation endangered him and led to further refinement in the Imprisoned Soul Cauldron 149 150 158.

He became one of Li Boyang's most effective hunters of dangerous spirits and ghost gods. His recorded achievements included battling the Three Evils, hunting the Five Monsters, and slaying Fierce Earl. Mountain villages eventually enshrined him as the Thousand Transformations Divine Lord 205 256.

During the flood conflicts, he protected Li Jingshu, fought Flower Mantis, and accompanied the Heaven-Eroding Lord to Thread of Sky. There he recognized the Blood Demon as You Chong, whose vengeance targeted the forces flooding the mountain range 192 193 213 217.

Journey West and Return

Deception Rabbit pursued Huoji as far as Kunlun's Guixu. After witnessing the Celestial Emperor's daughter confront the Huai Calamity Dragon Maiden, he abandoned the pursuit and headed home. Wu Yi's subsequent attack on Heaven plunged the outside world into disasters, and Deception Rabbit delayed his return to rescue afflicted humans and surviving gods 257 259 372.

These rescues brought him into repeated conflict with Great Xia's shamans and spread a legend of an Ominous Deity traveling south. While saving the injured goddess Xuansu Shi, he fought Wu Zhen for days and nights before escaping. He later acknowledged that Wu Zhen's desire to capture rather than kill him had helped him survive 372.

Xuansu Shi and Yinglong

Deception Rabbit and Xuansu Shi became lovers during their journey. With her nearing childbirth and unable to travel, he returned to seek Li Boyang and Xiluo's help. Li Boyang exposed her use of the rabbit as a means of securing protection, and she admitted that the pregnancy had been intended to help her control the Red Eye Cauldron 372 376 385.

Despite understanding her deception, Deception Rabbit remained determined to save their child. Xiluo sheltered the couple and warned that the divine fetus and cauldron could provoke a heavenly tribulation that endangered both mother and child 385.

After Yinglong's birth, Deception Rabbit devoted much of his time to childcare, even at the expense of cultivation. He built Xuansu Shi a bamboo house on Hidden Dragon Island and later intervened when her confrontation with Yinglong threatened the family 412 435 453.

Teaching and the Averted Death

At Hundred Lands University, Deception Rabbit became an unusually open instructor: even students outside his shapeshifting class could receive instruction if they asked. Nüwa was counted among his students 799 848.

Li Boyang warned him that a future female student would inherit and surpass his art, lead most of his students onto the Demon Path, and establish the Myriad Transformations Demons. Deception Rabbit would die trying to stop her, and his death would push her fully into demonhood. Recognizing that Li Boyang had come to change this fate, he thanked his old friend 801.

That death no longer formed part of his current future. Nevertheless, he remained wary when Dove People exchange students arrived from the Mystic Sculpture Nation and later avoided teaching them. Yinglong clarified that his reluctance arose from a personal issue, not racial discrimination 813 848.

Appearance

• Original body: A rabbit; before his cauldron refinement, his body was described as tiger-sized 192.
• Post-refinement body: Roughly three meters tall, with an upright, nearly human build, long ears, arms extending below his knees, and a crimson mark between his brows 192.
• Later bearing: Retains the same large build but acquires the presence of a battle-hardened veteran, with metal fittings on his hands, feet, and joints 370.
• Common alternate appearances: A human youth, various birds, composite beasts, and a five-clawed Black Dragon 69 74 86 192.

Personality

Deception Rabbit is curious, overfamiliar, mischievous, and compulsively talkative. His early reputation rests more on boasting, exaggerated stories, intrusive “surprises,” and poor boundaries than on strength. Li Boyang initially judges him to be clever but simple: a timid troublemaker with an enormous appetite for conversation 12.

His caution does not prevent acts of courage. He maintains escape distance when meeting strangers and trembles during the shrine infiltration, yet still risks divine retaliation for Nüman. He is appalled by Guifang's senseless human sacrifices and later repeatedly endangers himself to rescue disaster victims and dying gods 11 43 64 77 372.

He is also more perceptive than his unreliable manner suggests. He refuses Flower Mantis's attempt to shame him into abandoning useful equipment, recognizes Xuansu Shi's manipulation, and can restrain his curiosity when necessary. As a father, he takes pride in the prospect of Yinglong surpassing him and says he stopped boasting to outsiders to set his son a good example 217 385 386 412 813.

Thousand Transformations Divine Ability

His innate bodily transformation ability develops from copying fixed forms into freely designing living bodies 12 148 302.

A powerful Ominous Deity form, initially sustained through Li Boyang's Sha Qi and later used independently 79 150 192.

• With Earth Sha Qi support, gives him confidence to continue wearing down Huoji despite the latter's incomplete heavenly-deity breakthrough 257.
