Background / History
Tianliang and concealed allegiance
Yun Ranyi is introduced as the celebrated beauty of the Yun Clan in Five Willows City. The clan patriarch, publicly identified as her father, is reportedly a Spirit Transformation cultivator. Her reputation combines exceptional beauty with the apparent misfortune of being unable to cultivate because of blocked meridians 14.
Behind this respectable identity, Yun Ranyi and Xiao Yuan belong to the Extreme Dao Sect. Their affiliation is sufficiently well concealed that even Qin Poxu did not anticipate it. Their private conversation also indicates that Yun Ranyi possesses something not yet unsealed, while her later thoughts distinguish herself as a deity rather than a mortal 15 47.
Voyage to Heavenly Prefecture
The Yun Clan leaves Tianliang after fighting between the Resounding Sword Sect and Extreme Dao Sect near Five Willows City. Yun Ranyi permits Qi Yan to board their ship under his assumed name, Yue Jinjiang, despite already knowing his real identity. She subsequently considers recruiting him because he practices Witchcraft, rejecting Xiao Yuan’s suggestion to dispose of him immediately 14 15.
The voyage doubles as a planned hunt. During an attack, Yun Ranyi keeps her invisible guard from intervening when Qi Yan comes to her aid. He shields her from sword qi and helps her escape the cabin before a black dragon breaks the ship apart. After the attackers are defeated, she arranges a separate lifeboat for him and departs aboard the clan’s airship 16.
Yun Ranyi explains that she maintained their cover partly because a powerful female cultivator was secretly watching Qi Yan. Before leaving, she promises that they will meet again 16.
The Illusory Dream Spirit Butterfly
After settling in Bright Jade City, Yun Ranyi visits the Ye Clan in Changshui City, where Qi Yan encounters her during his investigation into weakened spirit-pet hatchlings. She presents her visit as a search for working spirit pets, but her concealed objective is the Illusory Dream Spirit Butterfly 29 30 32.
Qi Yan persuades her to assist his investigation. Ye Jingshan’s premature acceleration of the butterfly’s emergence disrupts her plans, and he attacks the group. Qi Yan again protects Yun Ranyi while she signals her hidden guard to remain inactive. Xiao Yuan captures both Ye Jingshan and the butterfly, which then voluntarily settles in Yun Ranyi’s palm 31 32.
When Qi Yan challenges her secrecy, Yun Ranyi acknowledges that she had treated him as a potential opponent. She accepts his criticism but does not answer his request that they stop guarding against each other. She nevertheless warns him that the butterfly’s birth may indicate an approaching divine descent connected to his master’s pursuit of communion with the divine 32 33.
As payment for his help, she gives him a phoenix earring that functions as a flying treasure. Afterward, she insists that her own plans for the demonic abyss formation must proceed without relying on him 33 34.
Alliance with the Heavenly Evolution Sect
During a disputed mineral-vein purchase, Yun Ranyi negotiates rather than using the Yun Clan’s powerhouses to suppress the opposing factions. She then offers the Heavenly Evolution Sect ten percent of the mine’s proceeds in exchange for protection, later raising the offer to twenty percent during her meeting with Jiang Jinyue 46.
Her larger aim is to establish the Yun Clan securely in Heavenly Prefecture and create an aboveground foothold for the Extreme Dao Sect. She anticipates that supporting the Heavenly Evolution Sect in a regional conflict could yield resources far exceeding the value of the disputed mine 46.
Jiang Jinyue instead asks the Yun Clan to occupy two hostile factions when needed—and demands that Yun Ranyi stay away from Qi Yan. Yun Ranyi accepts, privately regarding the personal restriction as easily broken and denying that her favorable impression of Qi Yan amounts to romantic love 46 47.
Appearance
Yun Ranyi’s beauty is renowned throughout Tianliang, and her appearance briefly silences a busy street. Qi Yan is particularly struck by her refined, well-bred bearing 14.
- Graceful demeanor: Maintains a serene, cultivated manner even during probing conversations 15 30.
- Clothing: Wears flowing, cloudlike sleeves and embroidered shoes 15 30.
- Jewelry: Possesses paired phoenix earrings; after giving one to Qi Yan, she continues wearing the other 33 34 46.
- Natural beauty: Qi Yan observes that her appearance does not seem to result from cultivation 15.
Personality
Yun Ranyi combines impeccable courtesy with calculated secrecy. She offers hospitality, pours tea herself, and negotiates politely, yet initially regards Qi Yan as someone to recruit or kill according to his usefulness. She is pragmatic rather than vindictive: she dismisses his role in the destruction of an Extreme Dao Sect base as minor compared with Lü Xiang’s provocations 14 15 30.
Her strongest principle is self-reliance. She refuses to entrust important plans to outsiders, believing that dependence places one’s life at the mercy of another person’s changing thoughts. Nevertheless, she admits that this very distrust makes the experience of being protected especially tempting 34.
Qi Yan interests her because he treats her as a vulnerable person worth protecting, unlike those who worship her or covet her beauty. She teases and flirts with him, but later insists to herself that a deity would not develop romantic feelings for a mortal 30 33 47.
With Xiao Yuan, her elegance gives way to affectionate bickering, petting, and occasional physical reprimands. Their private exchanges are considerably less formal than their public mistress-and-maid presentation 15 16 30 34.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Perception and Sealed Nature
Yun Ranyi can assess whether she senses a “resonance of divinity” in another person. Her own divine nature remains distinct from ordinary cultivation 15 47.
- Finds no such resonance in Qi Yan when Xiao Yuan suggests he might possess something unsealed like her 15.
- Has no demonstrated cultivation or personal combat technique in the supplied appearances; her physical vulnerability during the ship attack is genuine 16 34.
Political Analysis and Negotiation
Yun Ranyi recognizes that Heavenly Prefecture’s powers may consider the Heavenly Evolution Sect a more immediate threat than the concealed Extreme Dao Sect 30.
- Suspects Mu Xunzhen is pursuing the taboo path of the Arbiter of Fate 30.
- Uses trade, protection agreements, and anticipated factional conflict to seek a secure regional foothold 30 46.
- Offers mine revenue as an opening for alliance negotiations rather than demanding protection outright 46.
Concealment and Operational Planning
Yun Ranyi uses her respectable clan identity and genuine lack of cultivation to conceal her allegiance and objectives 15 16.
- Participates in the prepared maritime hunt while maintaining the appearance of a fleeing clan heiress 15 16.
- Directs hidden guards to remain inactive during Qi Yan’s rescues 16 32.
- Keeps the demonic abyss formation plan from Qi Yan even after their discussion about honesty 34.
- Her predictions are not infallible: she does not anticipate the butterfly’s accelerated emergence 32.
Tea Preparation
- Brews tea that Xiao Yuan explicitly prefers to her own 15.
- Uses tea-serving as part of her hospitality toward Qi Yan 15 30.
Equipment / Items
- Phoenix earrings / phoenix carriage — Paired jewelry associated with a powerful flying treasure. Yun Ranyi gives Qi Yan one earring; its riding form consumes little magical power, flies steadily, and provides a protective barrier. His cultivation is insufficient to activate its full carriage form 33 34.
- Illusory Dream Spirit Butterfly — Her concealed objective at the Ye Clan. After Xiao Yuan captures it, the butterfly circles Yun Ranyi and voluntarily rests in her palm 32.
Relationships
- Qi Yan — A prospective recruit who becomes a useful collaborator and a source of personal fascination. He twice protects her without knowing her true allegiance. Their growing familiarity remains complicated by her secrecy and his demand for greater trust 15 16 30 32 34.
- Xiao Yuan — Cat companion, publicly presented as her maid, and a powerful protector. Their relationship includes close familiarity, teasing, and frequent petting; Yun Ranyi explicitly values her above the phoenix carriage 15 16 30 34.
- Jiang Jinyue — Investigator, political negotiating partner, and rival over access to Qi Yan. Yun Ranyi provokes her with suggestive references to an acquaintance in the Heavenly Evolution Sect, then accepts her demand to keep away from him 34 46 47.
- Mu Xunzhen — A powerful figure whose goals and potential conflicts Yun Ranyi studies closely. Despite their differences, Yun Ranyi seeks cooperation with her sect as a means of establishing the Yun Clan’s position 30 46.
- Meng Ming — Hidden protector whom Yun Ranyi orders not to intervene during Qi Yan’s rescues; he later warns her that their residence is being watched 16 32 34.
- Yun Clan patriarch — Publicly identified as her father and reportedly a Spirit Transformation cultivator. She addresses him as “Father” while requesting arrangements for the sinking ship’s sailors 14 16.
Notable Quotes

“It’s precisely because I dare not depend on anyone that I crave it all the more... that fleeting, illusory moment.” 34
