Background
Ampharos was hatched as a Shiny Mareep specially bred at the Ampharos Lighthouse. Its pink coloration originated from an exceptionally rare mutation in Guang'er's bloodline: Guang'er and its mate were ordinary Ampharos, but their first Shiny Mareep established the lineage of Shiny Ampharos. Amphy cared for Ampharos before it hatched, which Ampharos later remembered upon meeting her. 210 342
It evolved from Flaaffy after Tetsuya used a high-quality Thunder Stone. The stone did not raise its potential beyond Elite Four level, but reinforced its previously weak physical fitness and further enhanced its exceptional Electric Energy talent. 252
At Olivine Ranch, Guang'er became an important mentor. Its guidance helped Ampharos break through to Quasi-Elite Four earlier than Tetsuya expected, while later training under both Guang'er and Amphy led to its Champion-level breakthrough. 343 550
Zapdos later gifted Ampharos a powerful current that fused with Water and Ice energies around the lake crystal. Ampharos chose to endure the painful transformation rather than discharge the energy. The result was a larger, stronger body and life-infused Electric Energy capable of rapid recovery and unusually fine control. 468 469
Appearance
Ampharos is a pink Shiny Ampharos with blue forehead and tail orbs rather than the normal red. It has white markings on its belly, neck, and ears, but lacks the wool it possessed as Mareep and Flaaffy. 252
- Stands 1.66 m tall and weighs 82 kg. 469
- Its blue orbs are its primary energy-conducting organs; the forehead orb was initially sealed and required specialized training to develop. 344
- Its glowing tail can serve as a long-range light source. 309 344
- In Mega Form, it gains flowing white fur around its head, back, and tail; its ears take on a horn-like shape. 690
Personality
Despite its harmless-looking pink appearance, Ampharos is intensely competitive. It routinely adds extra training beyond Tetsuya's schedule and has a tendency to push itself until injured if not supervised. 297 469
It is proud of its progress and enjoys showing off, but is also playful and affectionate with Tetsuya. It becomes jealous when Tetsuya gives attention to other Electric-type Pokémon and has no issue retaliating with an indiscriminate shock. 550 591
Ampharos trusts Tetsuya's commands and values that he understands its intentions during battle. In turn, Tetsuya trusted its decision to continue the dangerous energy fusion caused by Zapdos's current. 297 469
Abilities & Skills
Electric Energy Manipulation
Ampharos possesses unusually powerful Electric Energy, especially after its transformation at Zapdos's lake. Its life-infused current can be controlled with exceptional precision and behaves almost like an extension of its body. 469 481
- Can draw surrounding currents away from other Electric-types, as demonstrated against Electivire. 591
- Can absorb ambient electrical energy through its forehead and tail orbs. 591 764
- Uses Electric Terrain as a protective, hemispherical field rather than only a standard terrain effect. 481
- Its transformed electricity supports physical recovery during battle, though it does not erase its vulnerability to Ground-type attacks. 621 743
Magnetic Field Manipulation
Ampharos can manipulate magnetic fields to levitate and fly, an ability Clair identified as unprecedented among Electric-types outside species such as Magnezone. 475
- Avoided Altaria's Earthquake by taking flight, then finished the match with Thunder. 475
- Uses aerial movement to reposition against Electric-type opponents. 620
- The technique is not especially fast, but is sufficient to evade Ground-type attacks that require contact with the ground. 475
Orb Development
Its forehead and tail orbs are more than light-emitting organs: they are major sources of its power. Guang'er taught it how to activate and control the forehead orb, which most Ampharos never manage to illuminate. 344
- Both orbs can flare simultaneously to amplify attacks such as Thunder. 580 621
- The forehead orb can absorb large quantities of external electricity. 591
- Poor energy control briefly followed its premature Quasi-Elite Four breakthrough, creating a risk of accidental paralysis or burns to allies. 344
Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution changes Ampharos into an Electric/Dragon-type with Mold Breaker, allowing its attacks to ignore certain opposing abilities. 690
- Its Tackle power increased by roughly 60% during initial testing. 690
- Its Electric Energy output nearly doubled. 690
- The form causes heavy energy expenditure and requires restraint; Ampharos collapsed from exhaustion after overusing its power during its first Mega Evolution. 690
Documented Moves
- Electric attacks: Thunderbolt, Thunder, Zap Cannon, Charge Beam, Discharge, Thunder Wave, Electric Terrain, Plasma Shower, and Electric Net. 259 321 481 804
- Coverage and utility: Focus Blast, Iron Tail, Flash, Sleep Talk, Screech, Dragon Pulse, Fire Punch, and Giga Impact. 109 475 621 690
- Defensive techniques: Cotton Guard and Plasma Shower, the latter of which can burn away Powder Moves with charged particles. 321 259
Relationships
- Tetsuya Tamaki — Trainer and trusted partner. Tetsuya coordinates Ampharos's training, understands its battle instincts, and respects its decisions even when they involve significant risk. 297 469
- Amphy — Olivine Gym Leader who cared for Ampharos before it hatched and later arranged its mentorship under Guang'er. 342 550
- Guang'er — Ancestor and mentor. Guang'er is an Elite Four-level Ampharos whose Shiny descendants include Tetsuya's Ampharos; its instruction accelerated Ampharos's breakthroughs. 342 343 550
- Zapdos — Its current initiated Ampharos's major transformation and helped unlock its exceptional life-infused Electric Energy. 468 469
- Togekiss — Fellow team member and occasional partner in mischief; Ampharos returned late from training after spending time with it. 343
Story Role / Major Arcs
Indigo Plateau Conference
Ampharos drew widespread attention during Tetsuya's elimination-round match against Morii Kintaro because of its rare Shiny coloration. It used Plasma Shower to neutralize Butterfree's Poison Powder, overpowered Psybeam with Charge Beam, and followed up with Thunderbolt. 259
It was later sent out as Tetsuya's final Pokémon against a Quasi-Elite Four Rapidash and responded to Tetsuya's command with Zap Cannon despite being injured. 297
Olivine Training and Blackthorn Gym
After meeting Amphy and Guang'er, Ampharos received specialized instruction in orb control and rapidly advanced to Quasi-Elite Four. 342 344
During Tetsuya's battle against Clair, Ampharos defeated Altaria by using Magnetic Field Manipulation to evade Earthquake, then striking with Thunder from the air. 475
Zapdos Transformation
Zapdos's current merged with Water and Ice energies around the lake crystal, placing Ampharos under severe strain. Ampharos persevered through the transformation with Tetsuya's consent, emerging stronger with Champion-level potential and life-infused lightning. 468 469
Champion-Level Battles
As a Champion-level Pokémon, Ampharos drove back a gathering of Ocean Pokémon with a thunder attack powerful enough to leave observers convinced it was Champion-level. 512
It defeated Volkner's Electivire and fought Raichu using magnetic-field movement, maximum-power Thunder, Screech, and Charge Beam. 620 621
Mega Evolution
Bill fulfilled his promise to obtain an Ampharos Mega Stone, allowing Ampharos to become the first Shiny Ampharos documented as capable of Mega Evolution. Its Mega Form reached Quasi-Champion level and gained Electric/Dragon typing. 689 690
Trivia
- All known Shiny Ampharos are stated to descend from Guang'er and its mate's first mutated Shiny Mareep. 342
- Ampharos's pink color repeatedly causes opponents and spectators to underestimate it or view it as a pet rather than a battle Pokémon. 259 396
- Tetsuya has used Ampharos's glowing tail as a light source while fishing. 309
- Its unusual Electric Energy makes conventional species data unreliable for managing its condition. 704
