Background / History
Founding the Day After Tomorrow Society
Bai Jing and Hou Chen were among the earliest Awakened, surviving an era overrun by Polluted Beasts. Bai Jing was a physically weak Physician, while Hou Chen was a decisive Warrior. After the Great Cataclysm, the two friends founded the Day After Tomorrow Society 291.
Their followers eventually divided into opposing factions: some supported another term for Hou Chen, while others nominated Bai Jing to replace him. Although the two men continued trusting each other, thirty years of political conflict pulled them apart and eroded their belief in the “Child of Hope.” Hou Chen ultimately went mad, killed numerous opponents, and committed suicide. Bai Jing could save none of them. He left the society after losing his friend, comrades, and faith in humanity’s future 292.
Life on Garbage Mountain
Bai Jing lived in a tiny shack near Garbage Mountain, wearing patched clothing and eating inexpensive wild vegetable powder. His medical ability made him indispensable to the surrounding refugees, despite his lack of an organized force. Rumors claimed that he had been exiled after offending someone important in Ink City, but the refugees could not verify them 8 52 79.
He rescued the fever-stricken girl whose body Song Xiaozhu inhabited, using three bottles of antibiotics. After taking her in, he demanded thirty bottles in repayment and required her to earn her own living through scavenging. Song Xiaozhu later recognized that his apparently harsh demands had helped teach her to survive independently 2 59.
Treating Liu Family Village
Bai Jing left the community after seeing a villager’s bite-like wound and accompanied him to Liu Family Village. Faced with large numbers of wounded patients, he exhausted his antibiotics while treating people in the Golden Temple 12 70.
Among his patients was Xiaohua, a young girl whose lower body had rotted beyond recovery. When she begged him to stop the pain, he gently reassured her before ending her life with his needle-tipped finger. He accepted her mother’s accusation without defending himself 71.
Seeking more antibiotics, he escorted Xiao Tong to District Chief Hu’s office. When Hu pretended to be absent, Bai Jing waited outside with the young chief for seven or eight hours until her aide finally admitted them 76 79 80 83.
Song Xiaozhu’s Medicine
After returning to his shack, Bai Jing detected traces of blood and learned that Song Xiaozhu had killed Shang Bao. His immediate response was to offer to dispose of the body. Her explanation also revealed her unusual crafting abilities, which he identified as those of an exceptionally rare All-Purpose Craftsman. He supported her use of “Engineer” as a less revealing professional title 84 87.
Her ability to produce medicine from foxtail grass astonished him. He treated the injured Xiao Tong with her hemostatic powder, helped arrange bulk medicine production, and brought the resulting supplies to Liu Family Village 89 90 96 97 101.
Rather than relying solely on his initial assessment, Bai Jing observed patients over several days and recorded how the anti-inflammatory tablets affected different degrees of illness. He reported that they worked even for severely ill patients, though they remained less effective than treatment administered by a Physician 102.
Beast Tide and the Undead
Bai Jing continued treating villagers in the temples, including children with everyday illnesses. During the beast-tide crisis, he remained at the Earth Temple day and night; his treatment and Song Xiaozhu’s supplies were credited with Liu Family Village’s initial “zero casualties” outcome 143 144 184 192.
When five hundred guards were later killed, he examined their bodies and confirmed their deaths. He understood that Song Xiaozhu’s Human Transmutation would consume her life force, but did not stop her after she resolved to proceed 270.
After the guards returned as Undead, Bai Jing visited their homes individually. These examinations reassured both the revived guards and their families, reducing fear of their new condition. He stressed that they were not truly immortal and that their lifespans depended on Song Xiaozhu’s 279 280.
Final Assistance and Decision to Live
Bai Jing gave Song Xiaozhu his Bodily Transmission Stone as a means of securing one intervention from Wen Changye of the Day After Tomorrow Society. Wen later recognized from the stone that his adoptive father was still alive 239 288.
Before Song Xiaozhu departed to rescue Qiu Shuyu from the Han-Tang Group, Bai Jing admitted that he had suspected the danger but withheld his suspicions to keep her from rushing into Li Shijian’s control. He entrusted her with a brocade pouch to open after waking Qiu Shuyu if Li forced them to fight 291.
Nearly two years after the contest among the God-Favored, Bai Jing was barely alive when Song Xiaozhu and Qiu Shuyu returned. Although exhausted by his long life, he accepted the offer to become an Undead because he could not stop worrying about them. He intended to remain with Song Xiaozhu and oversee the Undead until the end of her life 301.
Appearance
- Elderly form: Thin, stooped, white-haired, and deeply wrinkled, with yellowed, cloudy eyes at his introduction. His frail appearance becomes especially pronounced after tiring treatment sessions 2 70 89.
- Force-active form: Returns to the youthful condition in which he awakened, appearing roughly twenty or thirty to Song Xiaozhu. His back straightens, his wrinkles disappear, and his hands become slender and pale 87.
- Clothing: Usually wears old, patched garments; in the Golden Temple, he is described in hemp clothes washed pale 79 101.
- Distinguishing possessions: A long-stemmed pipe and white cloth shoes 2 11.
Personality
Bai Jing is abrasive, sarcastic, and reluctant to express affection directly. He mocks Song Xiaozhu’s ideas, calls her “Shopkeeper Song” when her business prospers, and refuses to soften his manner even for frightened children. Song Xiaozhu eventually recognizes that his sour expression reflects his dislike of the world rather than contempt for individual patients 96 144 192.
His actions repeatedly contradict his harsh speech. He offers to protect Song Xiaozhu after Shang Bao’s death, quietly considers subsidizing her generosity, and devotes himself to wounded villagers without seeking comfortable living conditions. He also insists that innocent patients should not suffer because of political hostility between their communities 76 79 84 92.
Bai Jing understands awakening as a burden as well as a source of power. He describes fixed professions as lifelong compulsions that can reduce people to “a tool without a soul.” Despite his loss of faith after Hou Chen’s death, his attachment to his students ultimately gives him a reason to keep living 152 292 301.
Abilities & Skills
Physician’s Force
- Needle transformation: Uses white mist to transform a finger into a slender syringe, drawing up medicine and injecting it directly into patients 71.
- Enhanced antibiotics: Catalyzes medicine and guides its action against bacteria. The text illustrates the difference as an ordinary injection having an effectiveness of 10 compared with 100 for his treatment 71.
- Hemostatic treatment: Correctly applies and activates Song Xiaozhu’s hemostatic powder with Force before bandaging Xiao Tong’s wound 89.
- Limits: His medical ability does not make every injury curable. Xiaohua’s extensive decay was beyond recovery, and he could not revive the five hundred fallen guards through ordinary treatment 71 270.
Medical Examination and Research
- Medicine analysis: Examines tablets and powder using fine threads of Force, identifying their medical properties 87.
- Clinical observation: Keeps written records of patient responses to support detailed dosage and usage instructions 101 102.
- Biological sensitivity: Detects old traces of blood through a Physician’s heightened sensitivity to biological information. This is explicitly distinguished from a Scout’s investigative abilities 83 84.
- Undead care: Evaluates regeneration and advises patients on rest, food, training, and the dangers of overusing their healing ability 279 280.
Temporary Rejuvenation
- Effect: Returns to his condition at awakening while using Force; resumes his elderly appearance after withdrawing it 87.
- Nature: This is a general property of Awakened bodies, not a unique rejuvenation technique 87.
- Limit: It does not eliminate his age or accumulated exhaustion; his frailty and fatigue remain evident afterward 89 301.
Knowledge of Awakening and the Creator
- Awakened professions: Explains awakening, fixed professional compulsions, Bodily Transmission, and the transformation of dead Awakened into Awakening Stones 85 87 152.
- Advancement: Knows how Force indicates levels and why advancement beyond level three requires a Breakthrough Stone 144.
- Creator and test sites: Explains the competing beliefs surrounding the Creator and confirms that All-Purpose Category Awakened, including Song Xiaozhu and Fan Cang, contain Hearts of the Creator 193.
