Background / History
Abbot of Cloud Dragon Lower Court
Zhiyuan spent decades managing the Cloud Dragon Lower Court and developed an extensive knowledge of Yunyang’s clans, gangs, religious institutions, and influential figures. Although he administered the court competently, his greed caused resentment among its middle- and lower-ranking members 118.
When Zhou Wuji came before him, Zhiyuan questioned him about Li Yiyuan’s death. He praised Yiyuan’s talent and swordsmanship but believed his excessive determination to excel had contributed to his downfall 16.
After witnessing Zhou Wuji’s apparent Northern Emperor’s blessing through the Heart-Questioning Mirror, Zhiyuan ordered him and Yiping to keep it secret. He awarded Zhou Wuji ten Golden Yang Pills and free Law Technique lessons 18. Later, he helped arrange Zhou Wuji’s ordination and official registration as the lower court’s conflict with the Five Dragons Gang intensified 84.
At Zhou Wuji’s register-bestowal ceremony, Zhiyuan remained more skeptical than the other observers. He sensed unusual spiritual power and resonance with heaven and earth, but no identifiable will of the Northern Emperor. Whatever its cause, he recognized that the phenomenon would help justify the seventh-rank quota he had secured from the Upper Court 87.
Five Dragons Gang and Old Dragon Island
Zhiyuan sought firm evidence before moving against the Five Dragons Gang. Once its involvement in blood sacrifices could be established, he instructed Yizhen to use the opportunity to suppress the gang and demonstrate the lower court’s authority 98.
At the Cloud River Tower banquet, Chen Dalu attempted to attack Zhou Wuji. Zhiyuan intervened with golden light and subdued him, sealing his body, Gu, and consciousness. He then accused the gang of sacrificing hundreds of people, giving Zhang Shiheng grounds to take Chen Dalu into custody 101 102.
After Chen Dalu escaped, Zhiyuan accepted responsibility for protecting Prefect Peng Yue. He initially believed Zhang Shiheng’s arrangements were sufficient to secure Old Dragon Island, despite Zhou Wuji’s warnings. When a Yin Dragon appeared there, he acknowledged his mistaken judgment and immediately prepared to confront it before it could consume more Essence Blood 107.
During the aftermath, Zhiyuan organized the lower court’s camp, explained the connection between the dragon soul and the mutated zombies, and warned Zhou Wuji against retaliation from Zhang Shiheng 108. He also summoned True Person Zhihua by letter; she arrived in time to intervene against Chen Dalu and Chen Chaofeng 112.
With the principal enemies and mutated zombies dealt with, Zhiyuan designated Old Dragon Island a forbidden zone. Neither he nor Zhihua could remove the Earth Sha covering it 115.
Retirement and Transfer
Following the disaster, Zhiyuan relinquished the abbacy to Zhihe of the Yuheng Lineage and became head of Flying Profound Hall at Jingyang Upper Court. Although others regarded his departure as the consequence of a serious misstep, Zhiyuan presented it as a suitable retirement for someone over seventy 118 128.
Before leaving, he reported Zhou Wuji’s contributions to the Heavenly Master’s Manor, briefed him on Yunyang’s political landscape, and arranged a route for him to continue his studies at the Upper Court. His detailed recommendation helped bring Zhou Wuji to Heavenly Master Qingxu’s attention 118 130.
Life at Jingyang Upper Court
When Zhou Wuji reached Jingyang, Zhiyuan welcomed him into Flying Profound Hall and explained the influence of the Lu Household. He purchased Zhou Wuji’s Jade Liquid for one hundred thousand taels, deducting the ten thousand taels Zhou Wuji still owed for the White Rainbow Sword 179 180.
The Jade Liquid restored Zhiyuan’s vitality without removing his cultivation bottleneck. With his funds lent out through a bank, he deferred paying the remaining ninety thousand taels and offered Zhou Wuji free food, clothing, lodging, and transport as interest 180 223.
His renewed energy and Zhou Wuji’s exceptional talent rekindled ambitions that retirement had dulled. He helped Zhou Wuji seek early entry into Heavenly Authority Hall, advised him on advanced cultivation methods, and escorted him to his retreat 184.
Zhiyuan continued serving as a political adviser, warning Zhou Wuji that bypassing Lu Zhijing could jeopardize access to the Heavenly Pivot Lineage’s secret methods. He also attended the investigation into Zhou Wuji’s alleged extortion and helped explain the accuser’s connections to the Zhang Household 199 205 206.
Their association continued after Zhou Wuji’s rise: Zhou Wuji later gave him Fourth-Revolution Jade Liquid Pills and entrusted him with selling twenty more in Jingyang 305.
Appearance
- Build: Small, thin, and visibly aged, with a heavily wrinkled face 104 105.
- Eyes: Often half closed, but capable of shining brightly with spirit 104 105.
- Ceremonial clothing: Purple ritual robes decorated with golden patterns 105.
- Everyday clothing: Plain blue Daoist robes and a wooden star crown after stepping down as abbot 118.
- After rejuvenation: Retains his wrinkles, though his eyes become clearer and his Qi and Blood markedly stronger 180.
Personality
Zhiyuan is pragmatic, financially shrewd, and openly attached to money. He charges for valuable assistance, maintains investments through a bank, and bargains even with juniors he genuinely favors. His lifetime savings amount to a little over three hundred thousand taels, making the purchase of Jade Liquid a substantial expense 109 180 209.
His caution is political as well as personal. He dislikes becoming entangled in aristocratic interests, distrusts the Zhang Household’s ostentation, and prefers the Daoist order to operate within its own responsibilities. Nevertheless, he accepts that protecting the prefectural city and confronting dangerous supernatural threats are duties he cannot evade 106 107.
He values Zhou Wuji’s intelligence and combat ability but repeatedly objects to his ruthlessness. Zhiyuan wants to use his junior’s talents without allowing excessive killing, impulsive revenge, or a moment’s anger to destroy his future 103 108 118 203.
His religious faith does not prevent critical judgment. Rather than automatically accepting every extraordinary event as a divine blessing, he distinguishes what he can actually perceive from what others believe 87.
Abilities & Skills
Golden Light Divine Incantation
Zhiyuan identifies the Golden Light Divine Incantation as his principal technique because it suits him best. His mastery demonstrates to Zhou Wuji the value of specializing deeply in a single art 104 118.
- Restraint: Overwhelms Chen Dalu and seals his body, Gu, and consciousness before he can escape through the floor 102.
- Protective talismans: A talisman carrying Zhiyuan’s Golden Light Divine Incantation allows Zhou Wuji to withstand Chen Dalu’s attacks while evading him 112.
- Suppression: A speck of golden light suppresses the White Rainbow Sword’s activated radiance 115.
- Reputation versus ability: His decisive victory over Chen Dalu reveals strength rarely seen publicly and causes Zhang Shiheng to reassess him 102.
True Qi and Divine Sense
- Possesses pure, refined Fifth-Rank cultivation and a powerful Five Viscera Temple; his True Qi ranks among the best of Fifth-Rank cultivators 217.
- Uses Divine Sense to prevent outsiders from overhearing private conversations 108.
- Before taking Jade Liquid, retains a powerful spirit and vigorous Qi despite severely depleted Qi and Blood 180.
- His strength in cultivation does not extend equally to martial arts, which are described as mediocre 106.
Technical Knowledge
- Reconstructs how Chen Dalu used Earth Sha, Gu insects, and mass bloodshed to develop the Yin Dragon, despite not witnessing the process 108.
- Explains the relationship between cultivation ranks and the orthodox, great, luminous, spiritual, true, divine, and heavenly classifications of Daoist methods 184.
- Advises Zhou Wuji to prioritize techniques suited to his nature and recommends Northern Dipper Heavenly Pivot Yin Thunder if he has aptitude for it 118.
- Has limited knowledge of Third-Rank Secret Methods and cannot confidently identify Zhihua’s flight technique 114.
Administration and Political Counsel
- Organizes field logistics, including establishing a secure camp and assigning Yixing to prepare defensive formations 108.
- Understands the competing interests of Yunyang’s authorities and the Upper Court’s lineages and households 118 180.
- Identifies control over secret-method transmission as Lu Zhijing’s most serious means of obstructing Zhou Wuji’s cultivation 199.
