Power Progression
- Scope: The following records Zhou Wuji’s documented True Qi development. His unusually strong foundations make his values unsuitable as universal rank requirements; he measures True Qi against his own condition 166 185 223.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heavenly Pivot True Qi improvement | 12 | Improving the closely matched Xiaoxiang Sword also advances his True Qi and sharpens his senses. |
| Greater-mastery cultivation method | 33 | The Northern Dipper Tianshu Scripture permits gains of two True Qi points daily. |
| Seventh Rank — 723 True Qi | 47 | Opens and connects all seven apertures, gaining over 200 True Qi and access to the seven stars’ corresponding transformations. |
| Seventh Rank — 1,000 True Qi | 86 | The Transformation Realm Northern Dipper Tianshu Scripture improves purity, circulation speed, and precision, but does not itself open Baihui. |
| Sixth Rank | 89 | Opens the Heavenly Gate. Intake and refinement efficiency increase tenfold, while Law Techniques become stronger and consume less True Qi. |
| Strengthened nine-aperture foundation | 120 | Two perfected methods make his Heavenly Pivot True Qi 50% more potent than that of same-level cultivators. His Sixth Rank perfection requirement rises to 6,000. |
| Sixth Rank — 5,500 True Qi | 123 | Gains roughly 60% after converting a Fourth Rank Ghost Marshal and two Ghost Generals. |
| Further purification | 134 | Perfecting the Tianji Sword strengthens his nine apertures without increasing quantity; the same True Qi produces roughly 10% more power. |
| Sixth Rank martial cultivation | 142 143 | Forms a lower-Dantian Qi Sea through the Five Tigers Fist. Its circulation conflicts with his Daoist method. |
| Army-Breaking Sword transformation | 156 | Reworks his circulation and acupoints, forcibly unifying his Qi Sea’s energy and destroying the distinct True Qi condensed by the Five Tigers Fist. |
| Reinforced foundation | 166 | Perfecting the Army-Breaking Sword reshapes his acupoints again, raising the True Qi needed for Fifth Rank advancement to 9,000. |
| Sixth Rank perfection → Fifth Rank | 185 | Purple Qi Pills help him reach 9,000 True Qi and perfect all nine apertures. He then naturally condenses a stable heart aperture. |
| Fifth Rank — 13,000 True Qi | 200 | Perfects the Northern Dipper Tianshu Great Scripture and opens his lung aperture. Spiritual Qi intake and True Qi control improve by another 30%. |
| Fifth Rank perfection — 18,000 True Qi | 217 | Completes the Five Viscera Temple and links his upper and middle Dantians. Reaches 18,000 True Qi by the ninety-ninth day of seclusion. |
| Fourth Rank cultivation | 223 | The Big Dipper Heavenly Gang Primordial Qi Scripture Talisman greatly increases his True Qi. His Huangzeng Heaven aperture can hold about 500. |
| Ten refined spinal acupoints | 234 | Fourth Rank Army-Breaking Sword foundations let each hold 800 True Qi, adding 8,000 to his circulating capacity. |
| Ten additional Form Heavens | 263 | Origin Profound Qi converted from Yin Devils increases his True Qi by 10,000, approximately 30%. |
| Eleventh Form Heaven acupoint | 264 | Origin Profound Qi from a Third Rank Yin Devil opens and stabilizes the aperture, adding another 1,000 True Qi. |
| Thirtieth spinal acupoint | 279 | Nine head apertures, five visceral apertures, and thirty spinal apertures circulate together, further improving his senses and Divine Sense. |
Nature and Operation
Spiritual Qi, True Qi, and Law Power
- Spiritual Qi is the external source of a cultivator’s strength.
- True Qi is Spiritual Qi converted through secret cultivation methods into a form suited to the practitioner.
- Law Power is the power produced when True Qi is expressed through a particular Law Technique 200.
- Divine Sense controls Law Techniques, while True Qi supplies their energy; these are distinct functions 89.
- Cultivation both processes energy and tempers the practitioner, increasing the amount of power their body and apertures can sustain 156 200.
Quantity, Purity, and Control
- Quantity is not the only measure of strength. Purification can increase output without increasing the total amount of True Qi 134.
- Purer True Qi circulates more smoothly, responds more quickly, and supports finer transformations 86.
- Stronger Divine Sense improves True Qi control. The Tianquan Sword further develops precise awareness of the practitioner’s energy and fine control over Sword Qi 191 194.
- A stronger body supports greater True Qi and Divine Sense, but does not automatically confer immunity to weapons or spells 156.
- Better foundations can delay advancement by increasing the energy required to perfect an aperture, while allowing greater eventual capacity 120 166.
Cultivation Structure
Daoist Cultivation
| Rank / Stage | True Qi Structure | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Seventh Rank | Seven opened apertures, guided by the divine aperture between the brows | In Zhou Wuji’s lineage, the seven apertures correspond to the Northern Dipper’s seven stars and enable their True Qi transformations 33 47. |
| Sixth Rank | Opened Heavenly Gate at Baihui; nine-aperture foundation | Opening the gate fundamentally improves refinement and circulation. Perfecting the nine apertures establishes a stable upper Dantian 89 123. |
| Fifth Rank | Heart aperture followed by the other five-viscera apertures | Apertures and visualized deities form the Five Viscera Temple. Zhou Wuji estimates roughly 1,000 True Qi to open a visceral aperture and another 1,000 to condense its star god 185 194 217. |
| Fourth Rank | Thirty-three spinal apertures, described as heavenly layers | Opening the Thirty-Three Heavens greatly expands accumulated True Qi. Capacity varies with foundation and stage 185 223 234. |
- Around 700 True Qi is Zhou Wuji’s reference for a Seventh Rank Daoist; he describes at least 1,400 as necessary to open the Heavenly Gate, while noting individual variation 89.
- Ordinary nine-aperture foundations require about 3,000 True Qi for Sixth Rank perfection. Zhou Wuji’s strengthened foundation first requires 6,000, then 9,000 after further remolding 120 166.
- Once all nine apertures reach their limits, breathing can continuously draw in Spiritual Qi and transform it into True Qi without deliberate guidance 185.
Martial Cultivation
| Rank | True Qi Development |
|---|---|
| Seventh Rank | Martial artists may possess powerful Transforming Force without having condensed True Qi, as demonstrated by Wang Qi 52 53. |
| Sixth Rank | Condenses a Qi Sea in the lower Dantian, enabling True Qi cultivation beyond ordinary bodily limits 4 11. |
| Fifth Rank | Forms a second, middle Qi Sea in the chest. Both seas circulate True Qi and continually temper the organs, sinews, and bones 165. |
| Third Rank | Even hard-style martial experts require True Qi assistance; Zhou Wuji finds no record of reaching this rank through body tempering alone 306. |
- Daoist Qi Consumption and martial Qi refinement are different systems and cannot be compared directly by rank alone 4.
- After forming a Qi Sea, most martial artists emphasize True Qi cultivation; relatively few continue body refining alongside it 233.
Forms and Compatibility
| Form | Associated Method / Practitioner | Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Heavenly Pivot True Qi | Northern Dipper Tianshu Scripture; Zhou Wuji | Closely matches the Xiaoxiang Sword and Heavenly Pivot Hand. Its star-corresponding transformations support the Seven Stars Demon-Slaying Sword 8 33 47. |
| Yin-Yang True Qi | Yin Yang Dao | Combines opposing yin and yang, producing a recognizable black-and-white presence under the Six Yang Dharma Eye 44. |
| Profound Yin True Qi | Profound Yin Reincarnation Scripture | Resonates with Yin Spirits to refine and control them. Zhou Wuji believes its foundation originated in a Daoist secret method 134. |
| Tianji Profound Yin | Tianji Sword | Draws on Tianji star power and participates in transformations of yin, yang, water, and fire 134. |
| Grand Yin True Qi | Xue Ying | Used defensively against Zhou Wuji’s Sword Qi, though his Night Rain Sword penetrates it through superior variations 142. |
| Five Elements True Qi | Five Tigers Fist | Draws on the five tigers’ corresponding elemental Qi. Its Heart Tiger aspect is fiery and violent, stirring Qi and Blood 142. |
| Eight Extremes Primordial True Qi | Eight Extremes Sect | Stimulates muscular strength and Qi and Blood during circulation 134. |
- Palm and finger arts may require a specific kind of True Qi and special physical conditioning; manual dexterity alone is insufficient 36.
- Compatible swordsmanship can advance True Qi cultivation, but compatibility does not make a sword art a complete cultivation method. The Xiaoxiang Sword lacks its own circulation method 12 134.
- Incompatible circulation routes can conflict within one practitioner. Zhou Wuji initially suppresses his Five Tigers Fist True Qi with his stronger Heavenly Pivot True Qi before the Army-Breaking Sword unifies his foundation 142 156.
Applications
Law Techniques and Artifact Activation
- Supplies the energy for spells, with Divine Sense governing their operation 89.
- Greater cultivation generally increases the power and ease of using Law Techniques, including the Heavenly Puppet 83.
- Seven-star True Qi activates the Seven Star Sword’s corresponding Law Power transformations and strengthens the Seven Stars Demon-Slaying Sword 47.
- Can activate protective artifacts: the Pure Yang Lotus Crown converts its input into Pure Yang Law Power without obstructing the wearer’s own techniques 263.
Weapon Reinforcement and Projection
- Flows into a held sword to unite the practitioner’s circulation with the weapon 11.
- Can erupt through a blade after penetration, as Zhou Wuji demonstrates against Wang Qi 54.
- Projects through the Heavenly Pivot Hand as piercing fingertip attacks or direct palm force 35 36.
- Effective Sword Qi requires control over direction, size, angle, and layering; uncontrolled release merely wastes energy 92.
Physical Support and Movement
- Increases muscular strength and relieves fatigue through circulation and regulated breathing 47.
- Helps resist hostile Yin wind and ghostly Qi affecting both body and mind 69.
- Supports repeated midair changes of direction and nearly traceless landings. At 5,500 True Qi, Zhou Wuji can perform these movements but still cannot fly 125.
- Can support movement over grass tips and leaves, or be expressed as Sword Qi enveloping the body for Sword Evasion 192.
Perception and Detection
- Northern Dipper Tianshu cultivation naturally enhances sight, hearing, and observation 79.
- Distinguishing Qi detects presences and fluctuations—including True Qi—rather than ordinary odors 36.
- Opening the Heavenly Gate allows Zhou Wuji to sense minute changes in external True Qi and examine another swordsman’s circulation more closely 92.
- Stronger, more complete circulation can conceal its own changes: after Zhou Wuji’s progress at Lake Heart Island, even Zhiyuan cannot see through his True Qi 100.
Recovery and Enhancement
| Method / Item | Effect | Cost or Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Perfected Rejuvenation Technique | Instantly restores True Qi while refreshing mind and body 33 47. | Stimulates life essence. Zhou Wuji initially estimates about ten days of lifespan per use; one later recovery costs five days 33 47. |
| Purple Qi Pill | Rapidly restores True Qi; Fourth Rank pills also accelerate cultivation, doubling Zhou Wuji’s progress during one training period 140 185. | The documented cultivation boost is tied to that period of pill-assisted practice 185. |
| Origin Profound Qi | Directly increases cultivation and opens apertures; a stored strand can also restore True Qi at a critical moment 263 264 285. | Requires an available reserve. Zhou Wuji retains a powerful strand rather than spending it on routine advancement 285. |
| Origin Profound Spirit | Improves understanding and mastery of cultivation methods 32. | Cannot directly increase Qi; improved circulation and cultivation efficiency provide the benefit 32. |
| Heavenly Puppet’s Heavenly Robe | At one documented stage, increases the power of Zhou Wuji’s True Qi by about 10% 164. | An external enhancement rather than a replacement for his own foundation 164 166. |
| Big Dipper Heavenly Gang Primordial Qi Scripture Talisman | Permanently enhances True Qi cultivation; merging it into the divine aperture further strengthens its effect 223. | Its documented increase is not given as a universal numerical bonus 223. |
Limitations and Interference
- Rapid expenditure: Before Seventh Rank, Zhou Wuji can deliver only three to five full-power Heavenly Pivot palm strikes in succession. A later battlefield palm strike consumes nearly half his reserves at once 36 53.
- Physical strain: Repeated True Qi bursts can leave the practitioner weak and exhausted, even after victory 47.
- Killing intent: Wang Qi’s battle-hardened killing intent interferes with Zhou Wuji’s circulation despite Wang Qi not yet possessing True Qi himself 53.
- Hostile environments: Dense Yin Qi makes ordinary cultivation unfavorable, even when absorbing star power remains possible. Directly absorbing Origin Profound Qi avoids this problem 263.
- Army interference: Soldiers’ blood baleful Qi disrupts Divine Sense and Law Power. A sufficiently strong physical foundation can resist smaller concentrations 156.
- Rank barriers: Mastering a cultivation method does not necessarily open the next aperture. Even the Transformation Realm Northern Dipper Tianshu Scripture leaves Zhou Wuji short of opening Baihui 86.
