Background / History
Early Life and Arrival in the Other World
Fang Weiyan grew up in a village where his family regularly worshipped the Earth God. As his parents’ only son, he was expected to participate in these rites. After graduating from university, he returned home because of a family matter 1 2.
While playing on his phone at home, he abruptly appeared in unfamiliar mountains. A white-robed female ghost pursued him, threatening to remove his heart and liver. Fude, the local Earth God, sheltered him overnight despite having almost exhausted his divine power. At dawn, Fang Weiyan vanished from the mountain and returned home, where sunlight expelled the unnatural chill left by the encounter 1.
After discovering that objects could accompany him between worlds, he brought an Earth God statue from his village to Fude. Its stored incense offerings stabilized Fude’s divine station. Fang Weiyan then began treating interworld trade as a way to earn money while relying on the god for protection 2 3.
Linbei County and the Search for Cultivation
Fang Weiyan became magistrate of Linbei County and established himself at Cloud-Stilling Temple on Earth. His fortune-telling helped Zhou Wenfei locate his long-missing child and led to cooperation with Liang Lijian on investigations 41 43 44 45 66.
His early search for cultivation met repeated obstacles. Fude knew no mortal cultivation method and proposed that Fang Weiyan establish a City God shrine in his own likeness, potentially allowing him to become a god after death. Fang Weiyan continued seeking a way to cultivate while alive instead 42.
He also discovered practical connections between the two worlds. Chemical fertilizer strengthened Tao Lingluo’s remnant soul and supported supernatural agriculture, while the koi Silver Scale could alter people’s luck. These resources supplied him with followers, income, and ways to improve local conditions 51 56 57.
Governor of Jiangling Commandery
Summoned to Yanhuai City, Fang Weiyan asked Emperor Kaide for authority over a commandery rather than a position confined to the capital. He wanted room to apply his governing methods and establish a safer power base. Kaide appointed him governor of Jiangling Commandery without court funding and authorized him to execute officials who obstructed his administration 72 76.
Fang Weiyan used lottery winnings and confiscated silver to finance reconstruction. He purchased an Earth-side warehouse, imported grain and fertilizer, and planned grain-paid public works for as many as fifteen thousand workers. His administration addressed farmland reclamation, flood protection, recruitment, and the reopening of rice shops 85.
Learning about Human Sovereigns changed his ambitions. Rather than continuing to search only for cultivation manuals, he began developing the economy and military as the foundation for sovereign power 93.
Accession and Human Sovereign Investiture
When rebellion threatened the capital, Fang Weiyan prepared an expedition with modern protective equipment, incendiaries, catapults, ships, and trained soldiers. The Dragon King of the Wu River and Tao Lingluo supported the campaign 114 115 117.
After the crisis was resolved, the dying Emperor Kaide offered him both his daughter’s hand and the Jiang Kingdom’s throne. Fang Weiyan subsequently governed from the imperial palace, addressing unfinished state affairs and rebuilding the weakened Underworld Administration 120 123 125.
With the kingdom recovering, Fang Weiyan performed the ritual to ascend Mount Kunxu. His spirit left his physical body, entered an immortal realm, and surpassed the other assembled rulers to reach the first floating island. He returned invested as a Human Sovereign, with his personal power now tied to the strength of the Jiang Kingdom 135 136 137 138 179.
The Land of Ten Thousand Witherings
Fang Weiyan prepared for the Land of Ten Thousand Witherings by importing firearms, training soldiers, constructing defenses, and assigning Weiwei’s Mountain Spirit clanswomen to hold the passage. After discovering that its sinister creatures possessed intelligence, he warned other Human Sovereigns and expanded military production 162 163 169 171 178.
A confrontation with the Corpse Sovereign exposed the limits of his confidence. The sovereign stopped his Sword-Ray with one hand, sustained only a small crack, and healed immediately. Fang Weiyan suspected that increasing Yin Qi might be connected to the enemy’s immortality, but withheld the conjecture until he could obtain evidence 185.
He subsequently sought heavier weapons on Earth. An arms dealer could not supply the “mushroom bombs” he requested, so Fang Weiyan pursued close-in weapon systems and Vulcan Series weapons instead. The unresolved threat remained his priority even after his relationship with Su Qingyun became romantic 186 187.
Appearance
- Hair: Initially short enough that he wore a hat to help conceal the difference in local dress; by his reign, it had grown long enough to be combed beneath his crown 4 150.
- Eyes: Repeatedly described as clear, bright, and exceptionally spirited. Imperial escorts and Princess Yongning associate his gaze with extensive learning 66 72.
- Build: Tall; he states that he met a job requirement specifying a height of 1.8 meters 128.
- Changing appearance: Fang Hao and his parents notice that he has become more handsome and lively, with fairer skin. Su Qingyun also observes an increasingly commanding presence 128 141 187.
- Sovereign attire: Dragon robe, crown, jade belt, cloud boots, and a sword at his waist. His investiture gives him an oppressive imperial presence 137.
Personality
Fang Weiyan is cautious about unfamiliar supernatural threats. Early on, he buys protective equipment on credit and insists on Fude’s protection before leaving the shrine. Even after becoming powerful, he questions unsolicited diplomatic favors and retreats when an enemy’s strength is uncertain 4 171 185.
His concern for ordinary people informs his government. He is deeply unsettled when starving elders kneel in gratitude for nearly empty bowls of porridge. Later, he personally inspects rain-damaged homes and orders medicine for sick residents rather than accepting reports at face value 5 100.
He is also calculating about money and loyalty. He charges for changing Wang Youxian’s luck, recognizes the value of the additional temple worshippers Wang brings, and supplies gods with incense partly to secure their future support. He prefers cooperation with demons who keep their word over indiscriminate hostility toward them 51 58 97 128.
His confidence grows with his strength, but does not erase his willingness to prepare. His apparently reckless Russian roulette challenge is backed by bullet-resistant strength and koi luck, while his long-term preference remains peaceful trade rather than war with other dynasties 141 162.
