Chapter 1: Ordinary, ordinary, human, but super strong.

"You're an

orphan

."

"We're both orphans. We've been together since the orphanage. We're best friends."

"You were injured."

"Three years ago, we had an accident. I was fine, but you were badly injured and fell into a coma. It's been three years, and you've finally woken up. That's what matters. That's what matters. As for everything else, if you don't remember... it's okay if you don't remember. I'll be here to help you remember."

On the hospital bed, the patient sat blankly, her figure frail and thin beneath her hospital gown. She tilted her head slightly, listening to the young woman beside her bed explain in a tearful voice. The corners of the woman's eyes were red. The patient's gaze swept over that trace of red, and a faint ripple finally stirred in her still eyes. Just then, the woman beside the bed could no longer hold herself back and leaned over to hug her. The patient was held tightly.

Warmth passed into her. A little strange, the patient thought.

A wet sensation seeped against her neck. The woman was crying.

The patient paused.

"It's okay.

Amnesia

is okay too," the woman choked out. "...What matters is that you're awake."

The patient felt the other woman's deep, suppressed emotions.

Because of what?

"Friends."

This person said they were friends.

The patient tried to understand the word. Then something unfamiliar slowly rose in her chest. She felt that subtle sensation travel from her chest into her limbs, and only then did her shell-like body gradually feel full. A trace of human warmth appeared in her cold, still eyes. She opened her mouth and asked, "What's... your name?"

Her body, which had slept for so long, was stiff as though rusted. Her vocal cords were stiff too, making her feel as if she were operating someone else's body. The pitch of her voice sounded a little strange.

The person holding her let go at the sound, drawing back from their close embrace to meet her gaze in silence.

Why is she looking at me like that? Is she sad because I can't even remember my friend's name? the patient wondered. But the woman suddenly smiled and, under the patient's surprised gaze, held out a hand. "Yu Qingyi."

The woman's eyes curved. "Let's get to know each other again. My name is Yu Qingyi."

"..."

So that wasn't it.

This person has such a nice personality, the patient thought.

The patient lowered her head to look at the hand extended before her. While she was still studying it, the other woman took her hand and shook it.

"There, we've introduced ourselves again. Can we be friends again, then?"

The patient: "..."

"Mm," she answered with a nasal hum. The next second, she was swept into a full embrace.

Held again, the patient was much more used to it.

"What's my name?" Having already experienced just how nice her unfamiliar friend was, she asked the question with a little more ease.

"Oh, haven't I told you yet? Your name is..." Her lighthearted tone suddenly faltered. Held in her arms, the patient couldn't see the brief hitch in the face of the person hugging her, or the light fading from her eyes. Several moments passed before her gaze focused again, and a name slipped from her lips with a hint of inexplicable hesitation. "Ye Jiang."

Ye Jiang?

The patient silently repeated the name, and a trace of familiarity welled up.

It seemed that although she had lost her memory, some awareness remained.

She was Ye Jiang.

An orphan.

She had a friend named Yu Qingyi, who had a lovely personality and treated her very well.

She currently had amnesia.

Ye Jiang accepted her identity card and turned her quiet gaze toward her friend. The other woman, lost in some unknown thought, had suddenly become a little distracted. Noticing Ye Jiang's gaze, she forced herself to perk up and smiled at her.

Yu Qingyi suppressed that momentary sense of wrongness and focused on her newly awakened friend. Three years. She had waited three years. The hospital had urged her to give up, but she refused. Even if there was no hope, she would keep waiting.

Fortunately, she hadn't given up. Today, the hospital had called to tell her that a miracle had happened. Her friend, who had slept for three years, had woken up.

But she had lost her memory.

Her brain had been injured too severely. Although she had miraculously woken up, her memories were gone.

It's okay. Being alive is what matters.

Holding her friend, Yu Qingyi trembled.

In times like these, for ordinary people like them, simply being alive made them luckier than many others.

Three hundred years ago, polar night had descended. Darkness shrouded the world, and an unknown contamination spread. Those infected lost their minds and slaughtered wantonly, leaving humanity on the brink of extinction. A blood moon suddenly appeared in the sky, dispelling the polar night that had lasted seven days and seven nights. Some survivors discovered a moon mark on their bodies. Touching it allowed them to summon a system and use abilities. People called it the Blood Moon Ability System. Only then did humanity gain some power to fight back and avert annihilation.

But that only eased the disaster. Ability users were rare, and humanity remained in danger. Three hundred years later, the contaminated still threatened humanity's survival.

Everyone suffered. The woman believed that she and her friend could remain alive only because many people had silently paid with their lives to send blessings of safety their way.

Being alive is what matters.

Yu Qingyi secretly clenched her fists. She had to work harder too.

Yu Qingyi was silently encouraging herself when a nurse knocked and entered.

"Patient in bed 312, your test results look very good. You're just a little malnourished now. After two more days of observation in the hospital, you can be discharged." The nurse offered her smiling congratulations. "Congratulations."

Before Ye Jiang could feel particularly happy, her friend jumped up in delight. "Really? My friend can be discharged?"

The nurse smiled. "Yes."

"Wow!"

Ye Jiang: "..."

Her friend and the nurse knew each other well and began chatting. Ye Jiang watched from the side until the nurse finished her rounds and left, with her friend following her out. Her friend returned shortly afterward and told Ye Jiang to stay put in the hospital, while she herself had to go to work. She had taken leave to make this visit, and now her supervisor was pressing her to return. She would come see her again once she finished work.

Her friend left, and the ward fell quiet. Ye Jiang got out of bed and drove her two not-quite-healthy legs toward the window. She opened it, and sunlight streamed in from outside, falling over her entire body. Despite having lain there for three years, she showed no sensitivity to light at all. She looked straight into the sunlight toward the distance. Crowded skyscrapers, intricate traffic routes, and scenes of prosperity all rushed into view. Yet unexpected devastation intruded: for some unknown reason, a great hole had collapsed in one high-rise, exposed steel bars jutting everywhere. The opening was pitch-black, like a wound torn into civilization.

This wasn't the only example. There were many similar sights, as though prosperity and ruin existed simultaneously. It was very strange.

Facing the sunlight, she blinked very gently and slowly.

After waking, Ye Jiang spent a night alone in the hospital. Yu Qingyi was working overtime and couldn't come. Ye Jiang slept poorly that night because the patient next door was still playing the television in the middle of the night. It was far too loud and noisy. When the nurse came for morning rounds, Ye Jiang reported it, only for the nurse to think she was joking. "The ward next door is empty. The patient staying there was discharged a few days ago, and no new patient has moved in."

Ye Jiang thought that was impossible. She had clearly heard loud noises, apparently from some melodrama, with endless wailing and howling.

Ye Jiang liked watching television too. Since waking up, she had spent most of her time watching shows, but she preferred comedies, not tragic melodramas, and she never turned the volume up loud enough to disturb anyone.

The nurse was busy and rushed in and out, so Ye Jiang never found a chance to raise the issue with her again. When Yu Qingyi came, however, she heard about it and said she would go speak to the person next door. Unfortunately, the patient next door wasn't there when she went, so she couldn't speak to them.

Yu Qingyi had another night shift and had to leave after only bringing Ye Jiang dinner. She was terribly busy. Ye Jiang wanted to urge her to get some rest, but Yu Qingyi only smiled. "It's only busy for this stretch. Things will be fine once it's over. This job is very good. Although I have to work consecutive night shifts when it gets busy, the pay is very high. It can..."

Yu Qingyi spoke the rest so softly that Ye Jiang couldn't make it out. She leaned closer to listen, but the other woman stopped when she saw her and affectionately poked her forehead. "Don't get too close. I haven't had time to go home and wash up and change. I'm dirty."

The clothes Yu Qingyi wore weren't just dirty. There were also one or two tears. Ye Jiang had no idea what sort of work she did. Her gaze deepened.

"All right, I have to head back." Yu Qingyi stepped back twice, her usual cheerful smile on her face. "See you tomorrow, Ye Jiang."

Ye Jiang wanted to imitate her and return a smile. The corners of her mouth moved, but it felt unfamiliar, and she couldn't manage it.

She touched her face and only then realized something-

She seemed to have a bit of facial paralysis.

She thought this expressionlessly.

Yu Qingyi left again. Ye Jiang sat in a daze for a while, then decided to turn on the television and watch a show. After watching for a bit, however, she found it uninteresting and turned it off again. She lay back down with her hands beneath her head, her mind full of her friend. The dirt on Yu Qingyi's clothes wouldn't leave her mind.
