Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Ancient Wilderness |
| Original Name | 荒古 |
| Type | Parallel world; multilayered, higher-dimensional space-time 1 239 |
| Structure | Shifting worlds arranged by “world depth,” with separate daytime and nighttime spaces 8 11 25 |
| Inhabitants | Wilderness Beasts, other nonhuman life-forms, and Awakeners inhabiting Wilderness Bodies 1 |
| Accessibility | Humans with corresponding Wilderness Bodies can enter through a passage in their consciousness 1 4 |
| First Appearance | Introduced in Chapter 1; first visited by Wen Jing in Chapter 8 1 8 |
Spatial Structure
World Depth
- The Ancient Wilderness is not a single continuous landscape. Its layers shift constantly, changing their correspondence with locations in the material universe 8.
- An Awakener’s strength determines the world depth they enter: stronger individuals descend into deeper worlds. Advancing in strength therefore does not make exploration inherently safe 11 130.
- Differences in depth prevent powerful Awakeners from simply entering the same area to rescue weaker explorers 11.
- Federation research describes its worlds as theoretically infinite. After more than two thousand years of study, Awakeners have never reached its “bottom” 213.
Day and Night
| Property | Details |
|---|---|
| Time standard | The Federation’s four habitable planets use a twenty-four-hour schedule based on Ancient Wilderness time 7. |
| Separate spaces | Daytime and nighttime occupy different spatial layers rather than alternating within the same location 25. |
| Danger | Textbooks rate nighttime danger at more than ten times daytime danger, with no upper limit 7. |
| Transition | The change between day and night can passively transfer an Awakener into another Ancient Wilderness space 49 184. |
| Anchored travel | Wen Jing’s Gravity Silk can preserve access to known coordinates across these changes, but reaching a daytime destination after nightfall can involve crossing the entire night 36 49. |
Entry and Traversal
Wilderness Bodies
An Awakener enters through a passage formed in their consciousness and inhabits their corresponding Wilderness Body, a nonhuman form that may resemble an animal, mutant, or mythological being 1 4.
- Under normal conditions, the human body and Wilderness Body do not exist simultaneously in their respective worlds: while one is active, the other is in a state of “nonexistence” 5.
- Human bodies cannot function inside the Ancient Wilderness because its energy level exceeds their material composition 8.
- Above 60% compatibility, Awakeners can transform into their Wilderness Bodies in the material universe. They still cannot assume human form inside the Ancient Wilderness 8 23.
- Entry has a cooldown that shortens as compatibility rises. Wen Jing initially needs six or seven days between visits; after exceeding 60% compatibility, her interval falls to ten hours 15 144.
Navigation
| Method or Restriction | Function |
|---|---|
| Return algorithms | Calculate a safe destination in the material universe. Retracing an apparent entry point without one can leave an Awakener millions of miles away; a random return risks emergence in deep space or inside a star 8. |
| Military Algorithm Type II Lite Edition | Taught by Tainuo during the freshmen’s emergency evacuation. At 1% compatibility, returning still takes at least five minutes 8. |
| Locator Stones | Preserve original coordinates for repeat visits. A stone records only one original coordinate set at a given depth, cannot update it, and is tied to its user 87 287. |
| Gravity Silk | Lets Wen Jing retrace gravitational fluctuations to previously visited locations, functioning as an alternative to a Locator Stone 25 287. |
| Interworld travel | Outside day-night transitions, an Awakener must return to the material universe before entering another Ancient Wilderness world 184. |
| Interplanetary travel | Returning to another planet requires precise destination coordinates and an algorithm with that planet’s orbital access rights 104. |
- Entering together does not guarantee that explorers will arrive together. Teams commonly use Locator Stones and Mental Link to coordinate 24 78.
- Ancient Wilderness traversal also supports interstellar express delivery, allowing Awakeners to cross distances between planets quickly 103.
- Certain local effects can prevent escape entirely. The light surrounding the floating islands seals Wen Jing so completely that neither ordinary return nor the day-night transition frees her 165.
Transporting Matter
- Ordinary material-universe matter cannot be taken into the Ancient Wilderness. Ancient Wilderness matter can be brought out and subsequently taken back in 44.
- The standard outward transport limit is the mass of the Awakener’s Wilderness Body. Wen Jing’s Gravity Silk breaks this accepted restriction 9 23.
- Wilderness Weapons can accompany their owners without reducing the allowance for other transported items 65.
- Empowerment Stones qualify for entry because their energy originates from Awakeners’ Ancient Wilderness energy, despite being technologically processed 44.
- Mechanical prostheses cannot cross and are left behind. Clothing follows a separate supernatural exception 103 314.
Environments and Inhabitants
Natural Worlds
- Natural Ancient Wilderness environments follow ecological relationships despite their supernatural conditions: unusual habitats support corresponding organisms and food chains 134.
- Commonly described life-forms include insects, birds, poisonous frogs, Vine Lizards, Shadow Wolves, and ant colonies with supernatural abilities 28 49 56 57 73.
- Abilities can include mind control, regeneration after decapitation, shadow transformation, and explosive resin attacks 56.
- An unfamiliar creature may be either a native organism or another Awakener. Without a reliable means of identification, encounters commonly lead to immediate attacks 8 9.
Notable Worlds and Sites
| World or Site | Distinguishing Features |
|---|---|
| Giant-tree world | A tree-centered ecosystem containing Fluorescent Flowers, insects, Vine Lizards, poisonous frogs, and an ant kingdom. Wen Jing establishes flower fields, ant logistics, and a lizard ranch there 28 44 73 134. |
| Nighttime fire altar | A stone civilization trace avoided by pursuing Shadow Wolves. Its flames affect Wen Jing, while floor images and oracle-bone writing provide clues to approaching its center 50 51 52. |
| Chime Bells World | Associated with bronze chime bells and a nighttime banquet palace. Its challenges include wolf-headed opponents and a monkey-headed sword-casting instructor 74 169. |
| Volcanic wasteland | A scorching region where eating gravel worsens dehydration. Wen Jing suspects its apparent sun is a powerful Wilderness Beast after observing it triggers a severe moisture-draining attack 130. |
| Floating islands | Glowing islands preserve enormous Wilderness Beasts in spacetime amber. Disturbing a giant scorpion’s enclosure causes Wen Jing to be sealed as well 165 278. |
| Gear World | A civilization ruin Wen Jing identifies with the Western medieval period 197. |
| Factory world | Production lines create mechanical enemies that adapt to her attacks. Its rules also lock the physical growth of clones that enter it 227. |
| Ancient-god ruin | An underwater civilization ruin that transforms bodies and minds according to a Cthulhu-related hierarchy. Fully transformed victims lose the desire to return 282 285 286. |
Resources and Awakener Growth
Compatibility and Survival
Compatibility is the synchronization of a Wilderness Body’s higher-dimensional energy with its human body, using consciousness as the connecting channel 11.
- Spending time in the Ancient Wilderness gradually increases compatibility; rare treasures and fortuitous encounters can accelerate it 11.
- Wilderness Body growth strengthens the human body, while traits and senses can also carry over through synchronization 19 40 58.
- Prolonged absence deprives enhanced human bodies of higher-dimensional energy and can cause irreversible Genetic Collapse 15.
- Exploration is the leading cause of death among Awakeners, followed by Genetic Collapse and then combat 5.
- Imperial nobles provide an alternative through mental guidance, allowing some Awakeners to avoid exploration while making them dependent on continued noble support 194.
Valuable Materials
| Resource | Uses and Limitations |
|---|---|
| Rare fruits and treasures | Can strengthen attributes or grant traits. Some have effects that work only once 28 44 76. |
| Wilderness Beast meat | Can replenish energy and improve particular attributes, but many varieties are poisonous 18 88. |
| Ore and other materials | Used in advanced composites, training equipment, and Pseudo-Wilderness Weapons 90. |
| Wilderness Weapons | Rare supernatural equipment obtainable from civilization ruins; valued especially for improving exploration survival 65 282. |
Civilization Ruins
Nature and Rules
Civilization ruins are reflections of human civilization rather than ordinary natural habitats. Their local rules can reenact recorded events, impose trials, transform visitors, or restrict otherwise powerful abilities 83 227 285 286.
- Ruins reflect civilizations from different regions and eras of Blue Star, not only Huaxia 197.
- Wen Jing recognizes human figures and oracle-bone script despite the prevailing belief that humans cannot exist in the Ancient Wilderness 51 52.
- Xie Ming’s research associates ruins closer to modern times with greater danger 74.
- Reflected material includes fictional worldviews: the ancient-god ruin derives from the modern Cthulhu Mythos, rather than proving that its gods historically existed 286.
- Local rules can override raw power. Wen Jing’s Gluttony cannot simply bypass the factory world’s restrictions 227.
Unrecordability
- Ancient Wilderness information cannot be recorded through ordinary media, Ancient Wilderness materials, or even the Mastermind 257.
- Memory imprints fail to reproduce its experiences accurately even at 100% compatibility 19.
- Writing and totems visible inside ruins cannot be displayed in the material universe 52 276.
- Consequently, research depends heavily on descriptions, comparisons, and inference rather than direct records 19 53.
- This restriction is eventually revealed to be an added universal rule, not simply an intrinsic property of the Ancient Wilderness. The same unidentified “author” established the minimum awakening age of eighteen and the clothing exception during traversal 314.
World Cores and the Information Singularity
- The Key of Tuning can trace Wilderness Weapons to connected ruins, locate ruin world cores, and identify concentrations of power in natural worlds 201.
- When Wen Jing devours a civilization world, its corresponding light disappears from the Secret Treasure Gate. She consequently hypothesizes that Wilderness Weapons are weakened copies of ruin world cores 213.
- Civilization information converges toward an infinitely deep information singularity, described as the aggregate of civilization ruins 254.
- Xu Yuan emerges through Wen Jing’s connection to that singularity and the information she has consumed but not digested. His human appearance is explained by the human information entering the Ancient Wilderness 254.
Story Role and Major Discoveries
| Chapter | Event |
|---|---|
| 8 11 | Tainuo sends more than a thousand freshmen into the nighttime Ancient Wilderness during an emergency. Wen Jing survives her first crossing, returns with a stone, and discovers that her human attributes have increased. |
| 25 44 | Wen Jing establishes repeat access to the giant-tree region and develops it into a resource base. |
| 51 52 | Human images and recognizable oracle-bone writing reveal a connection between the ruins and Wen Jing’s previous life. |
| 78 83 94 | She joins the Operations Department’s civilization expedition. An unprecedented forced return and the subsequent failure of Brown’s Locator Stone trigger a top-secret investigation. |
| 165 278 | Her entrapment among the floating islands exposes a danger that defeats normal escape methods; the spacetime-amber enclosures later crack and release their frozen inhabitants. |
| 257 287 | Access to the Ancient Wilderness is revealed as humanity’s irreplaceable value to the civilizations controlling human society. Wen Jing’s ability to locate visited worlds becomes a lure for Alaya researchers seeking entry. |
| 292 | The Sacred Core announces that Xu Yuan has entered the Ancient Wilderness and returned through an agent. This claimed breakthrough prompts the Alaya Civilization to suspend other research and prepare to confront the Mastermind. |
| 314 | The origin of unrecordability is identified as a deliberately imposed rule. |
| 317 | With complete Information Perception, Wen Jing studies the void left after consuming a natural world and finds it unusually close to the universe’s fundamental nature. She concludes that the civilization reflected by the ruins comes from another universe. |
Before unrecordability was imposed, information brought back by Awakeners influenced the ancient cultures of the current universe. This explains similarities between those cultures and the ruins, but not the ruins’ exact correspondence with writing from Wen Jing’s previous life 317.
