Background / History

Family and Student Years

Xie Ming’s paternal family belonged to the Wang Family Chaebol. Poor elementary-school martial arts results led to his removal from School District Planet and the loss of further systematic training. He expected his family allowance to end at eighteen, after which he would live an ordinary life on Ocher Soil. Instead, an internal family struggle gave him an awakening opportunity 311.

After his B-rank awakening, his half-brother deliberately spread claims that Xie Ming possessed the strongest Wilderness Body in their year. Xie Ming adopted an aloof manner to discourage challenges, but Bai Xiao challenged and defeated him. Other students mocked the defeat, while prospective family backers tried to exploit his difficulties through agreements he refused to sign 311.

When Wen Jing and Xu Yuan later revisited this period, Bai Xiao offered to explore with him and learned that his arrogance concealed insecurity rather than contempt. Following Wen Jing’s suggestion, Bai Xiao defeated the rest of their class, undermining the ridicule directed at him. Xie Ming joined their circle and became Bai Xiao’s regular exploration partner 311.

Red Earth Academy

At Red Earth Academy, Xie Ming taught theory, conducted Ancient Wilderness research, and managed the academy’s finances. Its persistent deficits forced him to devise funding proposals while Bai Xiao repeatedly risked her life gathering resources. He urged her not to rely excessively on her luck during explorations 19 44.

His research institute also housed the academy treasury. Although called the academy’s second-strongest expert, he openly acknowledged that he could not defeat Bai Xiao despite being B-rank to her C-rank 43 58.

His own explorations remained dangerous. On one return, he appeared with a severe puncture wound through his back and residual white scales on his hands and neck. Bai Xiao administered emergency aid before medical robots took him for treatment; he subsequently recuperated submerged in a liquid-filled treatment pod 90 91 96.

Insect Research with Wen Jing

Xie Ming examined Wen Jing’s unusually small Wilderness Body and identified her as the first recorded Awakener with an insect-type body. Subsequent testing found that its energy had increased nearly a thousandfold while remaining within the F-rank range. He recognized that its tiny size complicated conventional assessments of its potential 23 58.

He used Wen Jing’s body, specimens, and Trial Tower results to support an Ancient Wilderness insect research proposal. When an independent scientist connected to the project disappeared, the injured Xie Ming entrusted Wen Jing with investigating the scientist’s address 44 87 96.

The project received approval with Wen Jing accepting second authorship and a monthly ten-point subsidy. Downloads surged during her Freshman League performance, prompting Xie Ming to increase its budget. A later paper could potentially lead the Education Committee to reassess her Wilderness Body grade 101 119 201.

Education Reform

After Saerjia targeted Wen Jing during her Azure Jade exchange, Xie Ming explained the wider institutional problem: Wilderness Body rank, rather than teaching proficiency, allowed professors to retain authority while assistants performed the actual teaching 160 161.

He proposed using Wen Jing’s case to challenge that system. The Education Committee approved a three-month trial allowing her to assess her professors’ proficiency; professors less skilled than her could be demoted and replaced by their teaching assistants 161.

Bai Xiao’s Death and the Ten Star Group

Xie Ming tried unsuccessfully to stop Bai Xiao from rushing after the Prophet. After her loss, he gathered the shaken Reformist Faction and advised its members to seek Dean Fu’s protection and, where possible, join the Neutral Faction to survive the political backlash 204 207.

He later defected to the Ten Star Group. Over three years, he introduced systematic education for its newly awakened recruits and helped turn it into an organization capable of challenging the financial conglomerates. Although he refused a formal leadership title, he exercised a leader’s actual authority 275.

His larger objective was revenge against the Prophet. After four years of planning, he organized an attack during the Empire emperor’s visit, intending to provoke conflict between the Empire and the conglomerates and draw the Prophet into the open 298 299.

The Prophet did not appear. With his companions trapped, Xie Ming sacrificed himself to summon Cthulhu, an evil god he had originally intended to use against the Prophet. Wen Jing forced the entity back, reversed Xie Ming’s transformation, and restored his damaged body. She then dropped her disguise as Weiluo Selan and revealed that she was alive 299.

Reunion with Bai Xiao

Wen Jing’s return gave Xie Ming renewed hope when she told him she had found a way to resurrect Bai Xiao. After the Mastermind’s defeat, he remained closely involved while Wen Jing investigated its final contingency and prepared the resurrection 300 305 306.

Before the attempt, Xie Ming assured Wen Jing that Bai Xiao would always have chosen to save her and that he did not blame her for that decision. He hurriedly changed clothes, fixed his hair, and rejuvenated his skin before accompanying Wen Jing to the site of Bai Xiao’s death 315.

When Bai Xiao reappeared, Xie Ming immediately embraced her. Three days later, the two were still aboard a small spaceship, unable to find their way out. Xie Ming recognized that Wen Jing had intended the situation to give them an opportunity to rest 315.

Appearance

  • Wilderness Body: A fish-type body; white scales remain visible on his hands and neck when a return to human form is incomplete 90 312.
  • Usual bearing: Frequently overworked in adulthood. His student-era aloofness was a deliberate pose intended to deter challenges 311.
  • Later condition: Noticeably more careworn after the four years following Bai Xiao’s death. Before her resurrection, he uses his ability to rejuvenate his skin 315.

Personality

Xie Ming is financially cautious, quick to bargain, and acutely conscious of the academy’s limited resources. He haggles with Wen Jing over specimens, worries about the cost of her record-breaking rewards, and raises repair expenses immediately after her destructive spar with Bai Xiao. His thrift reflects a genuine responsibility for keeping the academy solvent 29 44 143.

As a teacher and researcher, he is curious, encouraging, and willing to acknowledge uncertainty. He invites students to solve unanswered Ancient Wilderness mysteries and readily pursues new explanations suggested by Wen Jing. He is equally candid about his limited combat expertise 19 72 87 275.

His affection for Bai Xiao coexists with a longstanding fear of rejection. During their student years, he prefers preserving their friendship to risking a confession. Her death turns that attachment into sustained hatred of the Prophet, but he still prioritizes protecting his comrades when his revenge plan fails 299 312.
