Origins and Dao Principles
Qi Yun first acquires Great Luo Heaven by contemplating the Foundation Establishment method recorded on a black stone stele. He estimates that comprehending and mastering the method unaided would take at least four hundred years. Registering it on the Law Technique Panel instead allows automatic updates to deduce a Great Luo method belonging to him personally 193.
His interpretation differs from that of the former Great Luo True Person. Rather than treating Great Luo as a distant supreme concept, Qi Yun locates it in himself: wherever he stands, there is Great Luo. This self-sovereign understanding destabilizes the former practitioner’s claim to sole orthodoxy and becomes the basis of Qi Yun’s victory in their Dao contest 195 196.
Qi Yun later recognizes that controlling existing laws and improving existing techniques do not exhaust the foundation’s potential. Its deeper function is creation: using his own comprehension and Law Power to bring forth methods that did not previously exist 227 228.
Manifestation
- Internal foundation: A self-evolving universe within Qi Yun’s Purple Mansion, containing clear and turbid Qi, stellar trajectories, yin and yang, and the five elements as operating principles rather than mere symbols 197.
- External phenomenon: A magnificent, chaos-colored halo or Dao diagram depicting cycles of creation and destruction 196 267 395.
- Domain Heaven: Clear Qi rises into celestial phenomena, while turbid Qi sinks into manifestations of the Nine Nethers and Ruins of Return. Earth, fire, wind, and water circulate within interwoven Great Dao patterns 319.
- Later world form: Xuanhuang land, a great river, a sea of fire, and Gang winds emerge in balance, forming the embryo of an independent world with its own Dao and order 395.
- Accumulated Dao manifestations: The domain increasingly displays the Great Daos Qi Yun has mastered; absorbing powerful sword attainments causes countless sword phantoms to fill it 433 435.
Abilities & Skills
Creation of Law Techniques
Great Luo Heaven combines Qi Yun’s comprehension, will, Dao intent, and Great Luo Law Power to construct new methods 227 228.
- Deliberate creation: Qi Yun creates Ink Flood Dragon to detect approaching malice and trace disturbances in karma to their source 228.
- Emergent synthesis: He can introduce multiple mastered Dao intents without prescribing the result, allowing their collisions and fusion to produce a new technique 232.
- Documented result: Combining the intents of several older spells produces the Treasure Creation Incantation, which forms temporary treasures from intent but cannot create permanent Law Treasures 232 233.
- Comprehension requirement: Insufficient understanding can cause the deduction to collapse and injure Qi Yun. His initial karma-based attempt fails for this reason 228.
Dao Refinement and Assimilation
Great Luo Heaven absorbs Dao Foundation essence and other Dao attainments, turning them into usable insights or long-term nourishment 251 258 263 435.
- Talisman insights: Absorbing Xuan Ping’s talisman True Intentions helps transform Talisman Art into Supreme Mystery Register 251.
- Formation deduction: Digested formation principles are recombined automatically. Studying formations also stimulates Great Luo Heaven’s own growth 237.
- Selective refinement: It prioritizes portions Qi Yun can understand and use, while retaining unfamiliar Dao intent for gradual analysis 263.
- Long-term storage: Stellar Dao intent beyond his immediate comprehension settles within the foundation instead of being wasted 263.
- Limit: Unlike the Law Technique Panel’s more direct refinement, this process does not immediately bypass gaps in Qi Yun’s knowledge. Further study can accelerate assimilation 263.
Domain Sovereignty
Once manifested as a Domain Heaven, Great Luo Heaven establishes an enclosed realm governed by Qi Yun’s own Dao and laws 282 319.
- Home-field authority: Qi Yun’s will functions as law within the domain, substantially strengthening his Dao arts 282.
- Independent rules: The domain can resist, repel, or cover the surrounding realm’s order, including Azure Gate’s rules and Spirit Mountain’s Buddhist resonance 319 340.
- Internal suppression: Its laws and chaotic currents respond to Qi Yun’s killing intent, threatening to crush Wealth Connects to the Divine’s spiritual projection 273.
- Combat application: Qi Yun manifests it while killing True Person Moshou with Southern Ming Li Fire, then uses it to refine the seized Dao Foundation 258.
- Limit: Superior authority can overwhelm it. Azure Gate’s False Heaven’s Will compresses the domain from a hundred zhang to less than ten before outside support intervenes 319.
Foundation-Born Divine Abilities
The Great Luo Myriad Laws Dao Foundation grants two distinct Divine Abilities after Qi Yun reaches Foundation Establishment 202.
| Divine Ability | Function | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Wield Myriad Laws | Forcibly seizes and controls powers, including opponents’ techniques and formations 202 258. | The target power’s standing must not exceed Qi Yun’s own Dao Position 202. |
| Great Luo Edict | Upgrades a Qi Refining technique into a Foundation Establishment technique, or raises a Foundation Establishment technique by one version 267. | Requires a considerable recovery period after use. Its early application improves an existing framework rather than creating an entirely new method 207 227. |
Concealment and Spiritual Refuge
Great Luo Heaven encompasses objects and spiritual presences while obscuring heavenly secrets 272.
- Imperial Weapon concealment: It shelters the essential spiritual light of Wealth Connects to the Divine after the weapon abandons its main body 272.
- Karmic protection: Seven Great True Persons fail to discover the hidden spirit despite an extensive karmic investigation of Lifeless Valley 272.
- Spiritual recovery: Wealth Connects to the Divine regards the foundation as an ideal place to hide and nurture its damaged spirituality 273.
- Internal residence: Cai Kun and Qi Yun’s Dharma Bodies also appear within Great Luo Heaven 337.
Primordial True Body
Unlocked in version 2.0, Primordial True Body uses Great Luo Heaven and Primordial Immortal Light as the basis for imitating and embodying other Dao lineages 324 337.
- Lineage imitation: Reproduces another school’s Law Power, presence, and even Divine Ability characteristics 337.
- Independent manifestations: With sufficient understanding, Qi Yun can separate a lineage-specific Dharma Body from his Divine Soul while retaining his original self as its source and commander 337.
- Buddhist manifestation: Great Luo Heaven’s fundamental Law Seal helps create the Great Radiance Mahasthamaprapta Dharma Body, which can reside within the domain and manifest at will 337.
- Internal development: Fahai’s completed Dharma Body produces a nascent Pure Land inside Great Luo Heaven; he later refines sariras there and achieves a Primordial Spirit 341 345.
Supreme Dao Foundation Resonance
Great Luo Heaven can sense other Supreme Dao Foundations through their shared origin 411 442.
- Detection and capture: Qi Yun identifies eight Supreme bearers among the crowd at the Heavenly Court and draws them into the manifested realm 442.
- Dao integration: Its governing principle of dominion supports his plan to bring all twelve fundamental Great Daos under his control and fuse them into a new Dao of Great Luo 411.
- Karmic danger: Wealth Connects to the Divine warns that a Supreme Dao Foundation carries great karma and that “the supreme-must be unique.” Refining another Supreme foundation later draws Qi Yun into contention among Supreme bearers 273 389.
Final Evolution
The First Dao Attainment Method
Qi Yun proposes using Great Luo Heaven to reconcile two paths: the Xuanhuang method’s reliance on borrowed Fruition Status power and the Primordial Spirit method’s self-reliance. His intended solution is to forge a new Fruition Status from a Dao he creates himself, gaining its power without submitting to an already-existing one 411.
Gathering the Twelve Supremes
With all twelve Supreme Dao Foundations assembled, Qi Yun seals Great Luo Heaven off from Xuanhuang and entrusts its defense to his sword Dao incarnation. The barrier becomes ten thousand li thick, incorporating earth, water, fire, wind, and Immortal-Slaying Sword Intent. He then condenses the foundations into a Great Dao Golden Disk and begins refining it 449.
Despite the disk’s enormous power, Great Luo Heaven’s progress advances unusually slowly. Twelve Supreme manifestations penetrate the sealed realm, forcing Qi Yun into a trial involving both combat and inquiry into the Dao. The final Great Luo incarnation does not fight him; their dialogue transforms the damaged domain into a display of harmonious Dao rhythms before the incarnation merges with him 450 451.
Hunyuan Great Luo
The resulting evolution replaces Great Luo Heaven’s panel entry with Hunyuan Great Luo, described as a supreme Dao that rules myriad Daos and encompasses the heavens 452.
- Subsequent development: Hunyuan Great Luo later gains the ability to forcibly pluck a Dao Fruit and erase its existing ownership, leaving an ownerless Dao Fruit 458.
- Distinction: These Dao Fruit abilities are documented after the renaming, not as abilities of the earlier Great Luo Heaven 452 458.
