Background / History
Tournament Championship
During the tournament finals, the Sun Moon Empire Team confronted Shrek Academy with concentrated Soul Cannon fire and defensive equipment. Lu Cheng countered with an enormous ice wall and the Three-Legged Golden Crow, whose flames cracked the arena’s Level 8 defensive barrier and the opposing contestants’ Invincible Shields 135.
Before finishing the attack, Lu Cheng declared that Shrek surrendered both the team battle and the entire finals. Shrek’s representatives disputed his decision, but the Sun Moon Royal Team subsequently held the championship. The empire insisted that its team had won through its own efforts, despite widespread recording crystals showing Lu Cheng’s overwhelming performance 135 217 218.
Loss of Illustrious Virtue Hall Personnel
Lu Cheng later traveled to the empire to recruit Soul Tool specialists for the Body Sect. His targets eventually included Xuan Ziwen, Ju Zi, Meng Hongchen, and Nana. He remained longer to secure Jing Hongchen, planning with Meng Hongchen to implicate her grandfather in treason and make continued service to the empire impossible 173 187.
Following the explosion and heavy losses at Illustrious Virtue Hall, the imperial family imprisoned Jing Hongchen and confiscated his household. Public anger was directed toward him, while military factions moved to absorb the hall’s researchers. Xu Jiangliu’s Royal Soul Engineer Legion obtained the largest share 192 194.
Lu Cheng and the Body Sect intervened at the execution ground. They freed Jing Hongchen, subdued the assembled forces, and publicly humiliated the old emperor. Kong Deming restrained the arriving legions and sought terms rather than risk the emperor’s life. Lu Cheng escaped using Mirror Clones and the Undead Demiplane, taking his recruits out of the empire 199 200 201.
Succession Crisis
The old emperor’s humiliation aggravated his longstanding illnesses. His sons continued competing for the throne: Xu Tianran relied on his position as legitimate heir, while the fourth prince possessed substantial military and imperial-family backing 204.
Xu Tianran considered accepting the Holy Spirit Cult’s assistance in exchange for the imperial preceptor’s position. He expected Kong Deming to support an orderly succession for the sake of national stability. By the next tournament, Xu Tianran was prince regent and planned to blame the old emperor’s death on the Body Sect 204 215 217.
Mingdu Tournament Trap
Rather than immediately retaliating against the Body Sect, the empire opened its next tournament to sects and other organizations as well as academies. The expanded eligibility drew secluded powers to Mingdu, creating an opportunity to capture young elites and use them against their parent factions 205 215 222.
Xu Tianran and the Imperial Preceptor prepared an escape corridor intended to lure the Body Sect toward Qiankun Asking Love Valley. Meanwhile, Mingdu was sealed, and Xu Jiujiu reported that every messenger she sent out had disappeared 217 237.
The trapped factions agreed to escape under the Body Sect’s leadership. Senior experts attacked the imperial palace as a diversion while Lu Cheng led disciples into an underground armory near the Royal Soul Engineer Academy. The stores included enough equipment on the third floor alone to outfit four elite Soul Engineer Legions, though the raiders could not carry everything away 237 239 240.
Continental War
After the tournament, the empire began mobilizing armies toward the Ming Dou Mountain Range. The fighting became a prolonged struggle involving Star Luo forces, a Dou Ling Soul Engineer Legion, and Clear Sky Sect elites. Star Luo used captured imperial equipment to field three elite Soul Engineer Legions, two of which went to the front and suffered heavy losses 242 251.
The Body Sect eventually entered the battle under Lang Ya. Its second-generation disciples wore strength-enhancing armor, while a formation disrupted the empire’s linked defensive Soul Tools. Repeated attempts to rebuild the defensive network failed, and the imperial army was driven from the mountain range 281.
Government and Territory
Imperial Rule
- Supreme imperial authority: Treason could bring execution even for an official as prominent as Jing Hongchen; Lu Cheng regarded Kong Deming’s protection as insufficient once a betrayal charge was established 187.
- Contested legitimacy: The old emperor had murdered his elder brother to seize the throne, leaving his rule vulnerable to internal factional struggles 178 198.
- Military influence: Imperial-family power was concentrated in the military. Before Jing Hongchen’s arrest, the court had struggled to penetrate the tightly controlled academy and Illustrious Virtue Hall factions 192.
- Rare-metal smuggling: Smuggling implicated deeply connected military and royal interests. A full investigation risked destabilizing the armed forces rather than merely exposing individual offenders 198.
Major Locations
| Location | Significance |
|---|---|
| Mingdu | Capital and principal concentration of advanced Soul Tool research, resources, and elite military forces. Its streets use Soul Tools for lighting, transport, heating, and cooling 174 201. |
| Ming Dou Mountain Range | Major wartime front and the site of the Body Sect’s victory over the imperial army 242 281. |
| Eastsea City | Eastern coastal city supported mainly by fishing. Daily life there remains largely unaffected by the distant war 245. |
| Evil Demon Forest | Location where Lu Cheng hunts a hundred-thousand-year Evil Eye Tyrant during his stay in the empire 187. |
- Uneven development: Lu Cheng observes that Mingdu draws resources from the rest of the country, while Soul Tool development in most other cities remains comparable to the original continent’s nations 174 245.
- Material reserves: The empire’s rare-metal reserves are described as rivaling those of the original continent’s three empires and Shrek Academy combined 173.
Institutions and Key Figures
| Institution / Figure | Role |
|---|---|
| Sun Moon Empire Royal Soul Engineer Academy | Major training institution for Soul Engineers; conducts exchanges with Shrek Academy 173. |
| Illustrious Virtue Hall | Core Soul Tool research institution. Its personnel and research become targets of military appropriation after Jing Hongchen’s imprisonment 178 192. |
| Mingdu Soul Engineer Academy | Rival academy that challenges the Royal Academy; Princess Xu Tianzhen attends against her father’s wishes 178. |
| Kong Deming | Senior imperial protector and Jing Hongchen’s teacher. Places the empire’s stability above personal attachments 200 201 204. |
| Xu Tianran | Crown prince and later prince regent; coordinates the tournament trap and seeks to secure the throne 204 215 217. |
| Xu Jiangliu | Commander of the Royal Soul Engineer Legion; recruits large numbers of Illustrious Virtue Hall researchers after its political collapse 192. |
| Jing Hongchen | Former Illustrious Virtue Hall master and one of the empire’s five strongest combatants; joins the Body Sect after his imprisonment and rescue 178 201 202. |
Military and Technology
Soul Engineer Legions
- Elite formations: The capital possesses four great Beast Soul Tool Legions and the Royal Soul Tool Legion 174.
- Combat doctrine: Overwhelming firepower is the mainstream approach, compensating for the difficulty of accurately tracking fast-moving opponents 180.
- Reduced dependence on Martial Soul quality: Soul Tools allow users with sufficient Soul Power to produce formidable combat strength regardless of their Martial Soul’s quality 214.
- Talent recruitment: The empire encourages commoners to awaken their Martial Souls, providing a broad pool of potential Soul Engineers 202.
- Palace defenses: Layered protective screens can block a Limit Douluo’s opening strike, while concealed cannons and troops deploy from underground positions 239.
Notable Soul Tools
| Technology | Capabilities / Limits |
|---|---|
| Invincible Shields | Level 5 models can withstand a Soul Douluo’s full-force strike for three seconds; Level 6 and Level 7 models can withstand a Titled Douluo’s strike. Lu Cheng’s Golden Crow flames crack the tournament team’s shields almost immediately 135. |
| Linked Defensive Soul Tools | Provide coordinated legion defenses. The Body Sect develops countermeasures and later prevents the imperial army from restoring its defensive formation 205 281. |
| Humanoid Soul Tool mechas | Count among the empire’s closely guarded research achievements accessed by Lu Cheng through his simulation experience 85. |
| Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shells | High-grade armaments included among the empire’s guarded technologies 85. |
| Recording crystals | Widespread enough for imperial citizens to view tournament recordings, unlike the original continent’s greater reliance on word of mouth 218. |
| Civilian Soul Tools | Used extensively in Mingdu for climate control, street lighting, vehicles, bathing, and heated floors 174 216. |
Relationships
- Holy Spirit Cult — Political and military partner whose support becomes entangled with imperial succession. Xu Tianran considers granting it the imperial preceptor’s position, and Evil Soul Masters participate in the tournament encirclement 204 217 222.
- Body Sect — Major enemy. Rescues Jing Hongchen, humiliates the emperor, removes valuable specialists, raids an imperial armory, and eventually defeats the empire’s forces at the Ming Dou Mountain Range 201 240 281.
- Shrek Academy — Tournament rival and exchange partner. After the Illustrious Virtue Hall incident, imperial officials interrogate Shrek’s exchange delegation but release it when Shrek is judged unlikely to have stolen the blueprints 173 195.
- Star Luo Empire — Frontline wartime opponent. Receives captured Soul Tools to strengthen its resistance at the Ming Dou Mountain Range 222 251.
- Dou Ling Empire — Contributes an elite Soul Engineer Legion to the war against the empire 251.
- Hongchen Family — Formerly prominent imperial servants. Following Jing Hongchen’s imprisonment and the threat against his family, Xiao Hongchen concludes that they no longer owe the empire anything 202.
Simulation Histories
First Simulation: Continental Unification
Lu Cheng, acting as the Holy Spirit Cult’s Holy Son, forces Xu Tianran to accept a humiliating treaty in return for support for his succession. Its provisions permit Evil Soul Masters to act openly and receive living sacrifices. Lu Cheng deliberately aggravates the relationship, intending Xu Tianran to become the final blow against the cult 28.
After Ye Xishui’s elimination, imperial forces capture and execute Evil Soul Masters escaping the battlefield. With the Holy Spirit Cult exterminated and the original continent’s powers severely weakened, Xu Tianran unifies the continent within a few years. This outcome is associated with the Sun Moon Federation: Shrek becomes a public academy withdrawn from external politics, and the diminished Body Sect accepts the federation’s overtures 36 40.
Second Simulation: Lu Cheng’s Imperial Career
Born near Mingdu, Lu Cheng benefits from the empire’s universal Martial Soul awakening system at six. His twin Martial Souls and Soul Tool talent secure admission to the Royal Academy and make him Kong Deming’s final disciple and Jing Hongchen’s junior brother 143.
This simulation also shows the limits of imperial control over Kong Deming. When the emperor tries to stop him from supporting action against the Holy Spirit Cult, Kong disregards him and leads more than half of the non-border Soul Engineer Legions away 155.
