Background / History

Family massacre and life at Shrek

Zhang Lexuan belonged to a noble household in the Heavenly Soul Empire. A rival noble family allied with Evil Soul Masters and exterminated her family. She survived by hiding among the corpses for two days. According to her account, Mu En then arrived, killed the Evil Soul Masters, destroyed their noble collaborators, and brought her to Shrek Academy 43.

After Bei Bei’s parents died, Mu En invoked his kindness toward Lexuan and asked her to raise Bei Bei and marry him when he grew up. She accepted out of gratitude. Although she tried to regard Bei Bei as her future husband, he viewed her as an elder sister or maternal figure 14 43.

Meeting Qian Chen

Lexuan met Qian Chen during Shrek’s disastrous encounter with the Hundred-Thousand-Year Saber-Toothed Tiger King. She accepted his proposal to divide its ring and bone rather than insist on both rewards. After the battle, she held back her grief over three dead Inner Court classmates to maintain her composure as their senior sister 6.

She initially defended Qian Chen against Xuan Zi’s accusations, but fell silent after Xuan Zi argued that recruiting him was necessary to protect Shrek’s tournament supremacy. Later, she challenged Xuan Zi’s criticism of Qian Chen’s delayed arrival and offered her own Soul Bone when the academy’s elders failed to honor their promises 8 12 14 15.

Ending the marriage agreement

Bei Bei’s devotion to Tang Ya left Lexuan increasingly distressed, especially because she had suppressed her feelings for Qian Chen to honor her engagement. Bei Bei eventually rejected the agreement outright and told her to find another husband 32 40 42.

After learning the truth, Qian Chen proposed to Lexuan and brought Bei Bei and Tang Ya to Mu En to settle the matter. Lexuan declared that, since Bei Bei would neither love her nor fulfill the engagement, she would pursue her own happiness. Mu En subsequently sought to secure her lifelong loyalty to Shrek; she promised to remain, but refused to make that decision on Qian Chen’s behalf 43 44 45.

Lexuan later asked Qian Chen to marry her. He wanted to do so publicly as the leader of his own power, rather than merely as a Shrek student or teacher 56.

Academy leadership and Soul Spirit breakthrough

Lexuan and Qian Chen succeeded to the Martial Soul Department’s leadership, with Lexuan becoming dean and Qian Chen deputy. Her conciliatory handling of staff complemented his forceful demonstration of authority 85.

She initially resisted reforms that seemed likely to weaken the Martial Soul Department. Using the Level 8 Imperial Armor convinced her of the practical value of soul tools, and she accepted the need to train students in their use 88 89.

After reaching Level 90, she accompanied Qian Chen into the Star Dou Great Forest to seek a ninth ring. Their hunt became entangled with the Auspicious Beast, the Scarlet King, and an Evil Soul Master attack. Inside the Undead Demiplane, the dying Scarlet King offered her his ring and bone in exchange for vengeance against Evil Soul Masters. Electrolux transformed the sacrifice into a Soul Spirit contract, preserving the Scarlet King’s consciousness while completing and upgrading Lexuan’s rings 118 120 122 124 125 126.

Supporting Spirit Hall’s restoration

When Qian Chen revealed his Angel Clan ancestry and intention to restore Spirit Hall, Lexuan agreed to remain with him on three conditions 129:

• He must survive even if the restoration failed.
• The restored Spirit Hall must preserve its original purpose.
• He must deal decisively with Evil Soul Masters.

Qian Chen’s account of Tang San destroying Slaughter City shattered her former faith in the Sea God. She accepted his proposed transformation of Shrek into an academy serving talent from the entire continent and identified herself as a daughter-in-law of the Angel Clan. She also accepted his explanation for withholding the healing abilities that might have saved Mu En 130.

Lexuan helped organize the emergence of Qian Chen’s faction as Watch Valley, warning that an openly angel-themed organization would attract the Holy Spirit Cult before it was ready. She coordinated invitations and founding preparations, arranged an imperial audience, and demonstrated her strength before Xu Jiawei to discourage interference 135 136.

Suspicions and later responsibilities

Ning Tian’s testimony identifying Xuan Zi as her attacker led Lexuan to question whether Shrek’s senior figures had links to the Holy Spirit Cult. Learning of Mu En’s personal connections to Ye Xishui and Long Xiaoyao also made her fear that his rescue of her might conceal involvement in her family’s destruction. This remained a suspicion, not an established fact 156.

Lexuan helped Qian Chen remove Xuan Zi from academy management. Following his resignation, she took charge of the Inner Court and Inspection Corps, while Qian Chen and Bing Ling assumed the Martial Soul Department’s leadership 175 177 218.

She subsequently began personally training Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong’er, Wang Qiu’er, and Xiao Xiao as the next generation of the Shrek Seven Devils. Her Inner Court position was later considered too important to Shrek’s stability for her to leave on an external teaching assignment 218 232.

Lexuan is nurturing without being permissive. She cooks for those close to her, cares attentively for injured students, and offers reassurance to distressed disciples. She also sharply disciplines Ma Xiaotao’s misconduct and initially confronts Bei Bei over his self-destructive behavior 17 18 100 106 167.

Gratitude strongly influences her decisions. Her debt to Mu En sustained both her unwanted engagement and her promise to remain at Shrek. Nevertheless, she can distinguish her own obligations from another person’s freedom: she explicitly refuses to commit Qian Chen to lifelong academy service on his behalf 43 45.

Her loyalty becomes increasingly conditional on conduct rather than reputation. Broken promises undermine her belief in Shrek’s glory, while revelations about Tang San turn her former religious devotion into hostility. Her support for Qian Chen likewise rests on explicit moral and personal demands 15 22 129 130.

Lexuan respects Qian Chen’s privacy but sets boundaries in their relationship. After learning of the Auspicious Beast’s feelings for him, she permits at most three wives, including herself, and forbids concubines. She nevertheless welcomes the Auspicious Beast with conspicuous care rather than treating her as an outsider 117 218.
