He clashes with Chen Feng after Dai Mubai provokes him; despite using Mysterious Jade Hand, Blue Silver Grass techniques, and hidden weapons, he is overwhelmed. The defeat humiliates him and drives his determination to surpass Chen Feng. 12 13

His attachment to Xiao Wu becomes a central source of conflict.
