Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First Soul Ring acquired | 10 | Recounted retrospectively: Yu Xiaogang directed him toward a Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo, granting his first Soul Skill, Tenacity. Yu Xiaogang’s injuries and four-level decline had prevented him from seeking stronger Soul Beasts. |
| Level 26 | 7 | Reached after three months of secluded cultivation, motivated by his fear of losing Xiao Wu to Sun Shan. |
| Level 30 | 12 | Reached the threshold for obtaining a third Soul Ring. Sun Shan states that his interference delayed this milestone by at least half a year compared with the original timeline. |
| Third Soul Ring absorbed | 12 | Successfully absorbed a Man Faced Demon Spider ring despite a mental breakdown during absorption. His displayed ring configuration became white, yellow, purple; no post-absorption Soul Power level is specified. Eight patches of spider hair emerged from his back instead of the anticipated Eight Spider Lances. |
Appearance
Tang San initially has black hair and black eyes and wears a fitted light-blue outfit with a belt inlaid with twenty-four pearls 5.
- Trading-related deterioration: Prolonged losses leave him disheveled and haggard, with bloodshot eyes 9.
- Spider mutation: Eight patches of long, soft black spider hair grow from his back, producing a nauseating odor. Pulling out individual hairs causes many more to grow 12.
- Injuries: Yu Xiaogang’s whipping leaves his body bloodied and covered in deep-purple marks. Tang Hao subsequently knocks out several of his teeth and severely swells his face with a slap 17.
Personality
Tang San is initially willing to endure sustained hardship: he spends three months cultivating in seclusion to improve his strength and provide Xiao Wu with a better future. That determination is accompanied by considerable pride. Immediately after reaching level 26, he mocks three apparently idle Soul Masters, only to discover that all three surpass him in cultivation 7.
His confidence becomes reckless in the Stock Realm. He assumes that his intelligence will let him outperform other traders, dismisses warnings as jealousy, and believes he can leave a dangerous investment before it collapses. Even after recognizing the risks of leverage, he convinces himself that gambling everything will secure a better future with Xiao Wu 7 8 9.
Tang San is possessive toward Xiao Wu and uncomfortable with her becoming stronger than him. He resents her attachment to Sun Shan’s gift, later invades her room, and reacts to her meeting with Sun Shan by accusing and insulting her. After their breakup, he expresses an intention to forcibly impose the conduct he expects of a woman of the Tang family 7 14 15 17.
Fear of exposure drives much of his later behavior. He deceives Yu Xiaogang to obtain additional credit and conceals his debts from Xiao Wu when asking her to accompany Sun Shan. Although he recognizes the harm he has done, he repeatedly prioritizes avoiding disgrace—particularly Tang Hao’s disappointment—over admitting the truth 10 11 17.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass and Soul Rings
Blue Silver Grass is the Martial Soul Tang San visibly summons after absorbing his third Soul Ring 12.
- Ring configuration: White, yellow, purple 12.
- First Soul Skill — Tenacity: Obtained from Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo; improves his staying power and ability to withstand punishment. Tang San regards the skill as embarrassing because other Soul Masters mock it 10.
- Third Soul Ring: Taken from a Man Faced Demon Spider he kills after a fierce battle. The passages do not identify its Soul Skill 12.
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses two Martial Souls, both of which are threatened with repossession because of his unpaid Soul Power Loan 17.
- Blue Silver Grass is explicitly identified; the supplied passages do not name his second Martial Soul 12 17.
- Tang Hao intervenes because he refuses to allow the Stock Realm to seize both Martial Souls and cripple his son 17.
Tang Sect Secret Arts
Tang San possesses Tang Sect techniques and hidden weapons, which make Sun Shan wary of accepting a seemingly simple physical contest 5.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Used to pursue the Titan Giant Ape through the treetops after it takes Xiao Wu 12.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Used during his trading crisis, though it cannot stop his palms from sweating 10.
- Hidden weapons: Sun Shan considers them a potential threat, but no specific hidden weapon is deployed in their auction confrontation 5.
Stock Realm Trading
Tang San learns speculative trading from AAA Leek Wholesale Grandmaster, whom he accepts as a second teacher 9.
- Studies “short-term dragon-catching” and the “limit-up board suicide squad” approach 9.
- Uses a Soul Power Loan and tenfold Soul Power Multiplier to enlarge his positions in Pingtan and Dongbai 10.
- These are Stock Realm services, not Tang San’s personal Soul Skills. Forced liquidation can leave him indebted and expose his pledged cultivation assets to repossession 9 10.
- His apparent profits do not establish a lasting cultivation increase: the leveraged positions collapse before he can secure them 10.
Equipment / Items
- Twenty-four-pearl belt — Worn around his waist at the auction; its function is not described 5.
- Tang Sect hidden weapons — Part of the arsenal Sun Shan takes into account when refusing his proposed wager; individual weapons are not identified 5.
Background / History
Auction Conflict with Sun Shan
Tang San attends an auction with Xiao Wu and identifies Gold of Life in an unusual red-and-green set of scales. He explains that the substance is condensed life force with major benefits for cultivation, especially mental power. Believing the other bidders have overlooked its value, he expects to obtain it cheaply 5.
Sun Shan repeatedly outbids him by one Gold Soul Coin. Tang San reaches his entire available fortune of 300 Gold Soul Coins, but Sun Shan wins the item for 301. Afterward, Tang San requests a transfer and then proposes a physical-strength contest without Soul Power, with the item as the prize. Sun Shan refuses 5.
The encounter also damages Tang San’s confidence in his relationship. Sun Shan gives Xiao Wu a rabbit-bear plush toy, while Tang San cannot produce a comparably expensive gift. Xiao Wu keeps the toy despite later telling Tang San that she has discarded it 5 7.
Seclusion and Entry into the Stock Realm
After the auction incident, Tang San repeatedly dreams that Xiao Wu leaves him for Sun Shan. He responds by entering seclusion and reaching level 26 after three months. On returning, he discovers that Stock Realm trading has allowed other young Soul Masters—and Xiao Wu, now level 29—to advance faster than him 7.
Xiao Wu explains how traders convert successful investments into Soul Power gains. Tang San initially compares the system to a casino, then decides that someone of his ability should be able to make substantial profits 7.
His early investment in Pei Guangguang produces a 15% unrealized gain, which he claims could raise his Soul Power by four ranks if realized. He begins neglecting Shrek training and dismisses Yu Xiaogang’s concerns, even though he privately recognizes the investment’s danger 8.
Leverage, Collapse, and Deception
After his gains turn into losses, Tang San seeks advice on the Stock Realm forums. He becomes the disciple of AAA Leek Wholesale Grandmaster, who eventually persuades him that borrowing Soul Power and using tenfold leverage are necessary steps toward becoming a Titled Douluo 9.
Tang San maximizes his loan and buys into Pingtan and Dongbai. By the second day, his profit reaches 210% of his original Soul Power, but he refuses to exit. The positions subsequently lock at limit down, preventing him from selling and triggering a demand for additional margin 10.
To keep trading, he tricks Yu Xiaogang into signing a contract that pledges Luo Sanpao as collateral, presenting it as a subsidy application. That additional credit is also lost. His trading mentor then deactivates the account after leaving a farewell message announcing a profitable exit 10.
Sun Shan offers a temporary postponement of repossession in exchange for Xiao Wu spending a day accompanying him around Suotuo City. Tang San accepts and persuades Xiao Wu to go without explaining his financial predicament. On her return, she confronts him and slaps him for deceiving her 10 11.
Star Dou Great Forest and Failed Mutation
During the expedition for his third Soul Ring, Tang San remains terrified that Xiao Wu will expose his debts. When the Titan Giant Ape carries her away, he begins pursuing it but hesitates after thinking that her disappearance would remove the person who knows his secret. Sun Shan overtakes him and applies Bearish Outlook, attaching ill fortune to him 12.
Tang San later kills a Man Faced Demon Spider and absorbs its ring. Visions of condemnation from Yu Xiaogang, Tang Hao, Xiao Wu, and Sun Shan shatter his composure during absorption. Although he completes the process, eight patches of foul-smelling spider hair grow from his back. His attempts to tear them out worsen the growth and continue until he loses consciousness from blood loss 12.
Sun Shan receives the Eight Spider Lances as a reward for successfully targeting Tang San at this turning point; Tang San does not obtain them 12.
Breakup and Exposure at Shrek
After the forest incident, Xiao Wu stops speaking to Tang San privately. He follows her movements, enters her bedroom without permission, and discovers Sun Shan’s letter arranging a meeting 14.
Tang San interrupts the rendezvous and verbally abuses Xiao Wu. She explicitly ends their relationship, citing his hesitation during her apparent capture and his decision to use her company to obtain relief from his debts. Knowing he cannot defeat Sun Shan, Tang San retreats after threatening them 15.
Meanwhile, the Stock Realm repossesses Luo Sanpao. Yu Xiaogang realizes that Tang San’s supposed subsidy form was the collateral contract, gathers the academy, and whips him upon his return 15.
Tang Hao’s Intervention
Yu Xiaogang summons Tang Hao and explains Tang San’s gambling, debts, and risk of losing both Martial Souls. Tang San begs his father for forgiveness but also blames Xiao Wu and Sun Shan, asking Tang Hao to seek justice for him 17.
Tang San sends Sun Shan a conciliatory letter requesting a meeting about debt relief. At the meeting in Spirit City, Sun Shan waives the interest, and Tang Hao supplies the Soul Power required to settle the remaining debt. The process severely drains Tang Hao, while Sun Shan secretly curses him 17.
After repayment, Tang Hao prevents Sun Shan, Xiao Wu, and Hu Liena from leaving. Tang San asks his father to cripple Sun Shan and Hu Liena for him to handle personally, while declaring his intention to subjugate Xiao Wu. The confrontation escalates into a battle between Tang Hao and Sun Shan. Its first shock wave throws Tang San away, leaving his fate unknown 17.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and the person whose approval Tang San most desperately seeks. Tang Hao repays his debt, then fights Sun Shan on his behalf 11 17.
- Yu Xiaogang — Martial Soul teacher who regards Tang San as his own child. Tang San exploits that trust to mortgage Luo Sanpao; after its repossession, Yu Xiaogang publicly punishes him and contacts Tang Hao 10 15 17.
- Xiao Wu — Former girlfriend. Their relationship deteriorates through jealousy, concealed debts, and Tang San’s manipulation, ending with her explicit rejection of him 7 11 12 15.
- Sun Shan — Rival and eventual creditor with whom Tang San repeatedly clashes. Sun Shan denies him the auction treasure, exploits his debt crisis, redirects his destined opportunity, and becomes Xiao Wu’s new partner 5 10 12 15.
- AAA Leek Wholesale Grandmaster — Online trading mentor whom Tang San places alongside Yu Xiaogang in esteem. Encourages leveraged speculation, then abandons him after his losses 9 10.
- Shrek companions — Fellow academy members who witness his increasingly unusual behavior and learn of his deception after Luo Sanpao is repossessed 12 15.
- Da Ming and Er Ming — Xiao Wu’s companions, who oppose her relationship with Tang San after his hesitation during her apparent abduction 12.
