Background / History
Capture and the First Skill Index Experiment
Chongchong originally lived on a persimmon tree in Shi Yu’s courtyard. It was visibly thinner than the Green Silkworms at the breeding base, and Shi Yu judged that its malnutrition would ordinarily prevent it from evolving. Seeking a low-risk test of the Skill Index’s stamina cost, he ordered Eleven to bring it down. Eleven snapped its branch without using a skill and celebrated the capture as his first victory 9.
The frightened silkworm attempted to flee and then resisted with Worm Silk, which Shi Yu easily tore apart. Shi Yu used the Skill Index to teach it the skill it already knew, triggering its second awakening and increasing its proficiency. Chongchong tried to escape again afterward, apparently failing to connect its improvement with Shi Yu’s actions 10.
Life in Shi Yu’s Courtyard
Shi Yu made a simple iron-wire birdcage to house Chongchong, intending to develop its silk into a source of income. Green Silkworm silk had textile, medicinal, and industrial uses, making high-quality production a possible way to finance Eleven’s upkeep 11.
Chongchong initially ate persimmon leaves, even pulling them into its cage with Worm Silk. Shi Yu supplemented these with other leaves, including bamboo and cabbage. Regular food and repeated Telepathy practice gradually made it obedient; it also came to regard the cage as protection from birds rather than merely confinement 12 14 16.
After its Worm Silk reached Expert Level, Shi Yu assigned it to fire silk projectiles at Eleven. This gave Eleven a quiet way to train Super Vision, dodging, and precisely placed Hardening. Shi Yu offered extra food as an incentive, while Eleven enthusiastically recruited the reluctant silkworm into training 28.
Evolution Planning and Wilderness Assessment
Lu Qingyi’s visit changed Chongchong’s prospects from a potential silk supplier to a possible future contracted pet. She offered Shi Yu three commander-level evolution paths. He selected the Goddess of Light Butterfly method as a reference, but began considering an original evolution built around Supreme Level Worm Silk and a skill taught before cocooning 32 33.
During the Tianmang Mountain assessment, Chongchong traveled in Shi Yu’s backpack and bound Long-Spined Wild Boars after Eleven defeated them. Its obedience despite apparently lacking a contract surprised the monitoring staff. On the expedition’s final day, Shi Yu and Eleven helped it find Dragon Whisker Grass as a reward for its work 37 39 40 45.
After returning home, Shi Yu continued teaching Worm Silk. He eventually planned to make these lessons a nightly routine because the resulting period of weakness helped him fall asleep 48.
Appearance
- Body: Small and green; initially noticeably thinner than the well-fed Green Silkworms at the breeding base 9.
- Species features: Palm-sized, fuzzy-bodied larvae with innocent-looking eyes and two yellow antennae 4.
- Awakening markings: Initially had one marking; a second appeared during its first Skill Index-induced awakening 10.
Personality
Chongchong is unusually unambitious for its species. Rather than seeking nutritious plants to support growth and evolution, it was content to eat leaves from Shi Yu’s untended persimmon tree. Even after becoming stronger, its immediate priority was finding somewhere safe to rest rather than exploring its new abilities 10 12.
Initially fearful and resistant, it became compliant once life with Shi Yu provided regular meals and shelter. It was alarmed by Eleven’s punishing training and preferred remaining safely inside its birdcage. Food remained a reliable incentive: it readily asked for meals and was deeply moved when Shi Yu decided to reward its expedition work with better food 15 16 28 45.
Abilities & Skills
Worm Silk
Chongchong’s only documented skill is the unranked insect-type species skill Worm Silk. Repeated Skill Index lessons raised it from easily torn strands to Expert Level silk with precise control 4 10 16.
- Manipulation: Pulls leaves into its cage and can tie decorative knots, controlling silk as deftly as limbs 12 16.
- Restraint: Binds large, defeated Long-Spined Wild Boars for transport during the wilderness assessment 39 40.
- Worm Silk: Ray: Condenses finger-length pieces of silk and fires them like arrows. At Expert Level, it can launch successive shots resembling a dense rain of projectiles 28.
- Training support: Its small, fast projectiles help Eleven practice tracking, evasion, and localized defense 28.
- Power limits: Its Expert Level silk is compared to fishing line, but its small body limits its effective strength. Its silk rays cannot pierce Shi Yu’s inexpensive clothing 16 28.
- Stamina limits: Sustained silk production exhausts it; after one training session, it had no silk left to produce 35.
Silk Quality and Diet
- Diet-dependent properties: Green Silkworm silk can acquire different properties depending on food, including qualities useful for medicine or cold-resistant clothing 12.
- Commercial potential: Shi Yu intended to raise Chongchong’s proficiency to Perfect Level and sell its silk, but had not sold any by Lu Qingyi’s visit 11 32.
- Specialized food: Shi Yu selected Dragon Whisker Grass to strengthen its Worm Silk during the Tianmang Mountain expedition 45.
Evolution Potential
Green Silkworms can naturally evolve into Wind Crystal Butterflies after receiving sufficient nutrition. The species also has dozens of known moth and butterfly evolution paths, with outcomes influenced by how an individual is raised 4 32.
Known Evolution Options
These are potential paths discussed for Chongchong, not forms it has attained.
| Evolution | Species Rank | Attributes / Abilities | Requirements or Relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wind Crystal Butterfly | Low-Level Transcendent | Can awaken Wind Blade | Natural evolution supported by sufficient nutrition 4. |
| Ice Crystal Swallowtail | Low Commander | Wind and ice; can awaken Blizzard | Requires specific materials and at least Expert Level Worm Silk before cocooning 32. |
| Ghost Beauty Butterfly | Medium Commander | Dark; curses, ambushes, and assassination | Requires specific materials and at least Expert Level Worm Silk before cocooning 32. |
| Goddess of Light Butterfly | High Commander | Light rays and illusions | Shi Yu obtained this method as a reference and backup 32 33. |
Goddess of Light Butterfly Method
| Step | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Skill prerequisite | Worm Silk at Expert Level or above 33. |
| Level-nine preparation | Feed Light-Containing Grass soaked for one hour in a 9:1 mixture of Sunlight Rock powder and spring water. Continue using it as the main food until level ten 33. |
| Level-ten materials | Within one day, consume one unripe Heart of Light aged one to three years, ten ripe Sun Flower petals, three Firefly Light Cores, and fifty grams of Luminous Fungus 33. |
| Cocooning | Form a cocoon with Worm Silk after consuming the materials. Evolution takes approximately thirty days 33. |
| Successful emergence | Awaken Rainbow Light inside the cocoon and use it to break out 33. |
Shi Yu’s Experimental Plan
- Proposed approach: Combine Supreme Level Worm Silk, a skill taught before cocooning, and materials selected for a desired attribute 33.
- Reasoning: More proficient Worm Silk creates a stronger cocoon and greater evolutionary potential, but also makes emergence harder. Shi Yu hoped a pre-taught skill could solve the breakout problem 33.
- Risk: Failure to awaken a suitable cocoon-breaking skill can leave a Green Silkworm trapped until death 33.
- Unsettled direction: Shi Yu considered healing, support, mythical bloodlines, and rare space or time attributes, but decided that available skills and materials would determine the eventual path 45.
- Documented limit: Chongchong has not reached Supreme Level Worm Silk or undergone evolution in the supplied chapters 48.
Relationships
- Shi Yu — Caretaker and trainer. Initially captured Chongchong as a Skill Index test subject and prospective silk supplier, then began researching its evolution and possible future role as a second pet 9 10 11 32 33.
- Eleven — Household companion and training partner. Captured Chongchong in his first “battle,” later trained against its silk rays, and helped obtain better food for it. Despite his enthusiasm for exhausting training, Eleven worried about losing his little companion 9 28 45.
- Lu Qingyi — Source of evolution guidance. Recognized Chongchong’s potential, explained three commander-level paths, and supplied the Goddess of Light Butterfly method 32 33.
