Tree Climbing and Water Walking were training methods used in Naruto to hone Chakra control.

Hu Jiu figured that whether it was Chakra from Naruto or soul power from Douluo, they were ultimately both supernatural forces. Using Tree Climbing and Water Walking as training methods might not necessarily create skills, but no matter what, they would benefit him.
