Background / History
Entering the Genius Training Camp
Zhou Lei was the best student at his school. He and Jin Xiaoyan, whom he had long liked, began climbing Ming Mountain ahead of the other candidates because their schools were closest to the training ground. As the ascent became harder, he considered going ahead without her rather than risk losing his place at camp. Their argument was interrupted when Qin Chen raced past them; Zhou Lei asked which school he attended 11.
After entering camp, Zhou Lei believed Huang Jian’s account of Qin Chen destroying every mechanical puppet because he had already witnessed Qin Chen’s effortless mountain climb. He approached Qin Chen in the cafeteria and asked to become his “little brother.” Qin Chen accepted after Zhou Lei offered to gather information for him 16 17.
Supporting Qin Chen
Zhou Lei publicly defended Qin Chen against accusations that he had entered through connections. Other trainees initially mocked him, but Qin Chen’s one-move victory over Mo Qing vindicated his confidence. Trainees then began asking Zhou Lei for introductions, much to his delight 19.
Outside the fire elemental cultivation room, he claimed Qin Chen could endure at least ten hours despite having no experience with the room himself. When Qin Chen reached that mark, Zhou Lei extended his estimate to eleven hours to conceal that he had been guessing. His bravado collapsed as the session approached twelve hours and the instructors became concerned 20 21.
During Qin Chen’s absence, Zhou Lei repeatedly defended his standing against comparisons with Yu Yang and Xu Fei. Privately, he worried that Qin Chen losing prestige would also damage his own position. Upon Qin Chen’s return, he predicted sevenfold gravity and proudly celebrated when the prediction proved correct, greeting Qin Chen afterward with a prepared towel 30 32 33.
Ming Mountain Assessment
Zhou Lei persuaded Qin Chen to let him accompany him during the mountain assessment, offering to help and keep watch overnight. He killed a Blood Wolf through cautious attacks from behind a tree, then later recovered a beast crystal from an Early Body Tempering beast 36 37.
He volunteered to face a One-Star Fire Cloud Tiger because he expected Qin Chen to rescue him if necessary. When it pounced, he immediately fled behind Qin Chen, who killed it with one punch 37.
Zhao Liang’s arrival frightened him even more than the tiger had. During the ensuing attack on Qin Chen, Zhou Lei retreated and made a phone call; the recipient is not identified. After Zhao Liang’s death, he wanted to leave the assessment, but Luo Bin told him to carry on. He cautiously departed alone 38 39.
Personality
Zhou Lei admires strength and is willing to attach himself openly to someone he respects, even when others ridicule him. His loyalty to Qin Chen is genuine, but he also enjoys the attention and protection their association brings. His repeated boasting irritates other trainees, some of whom refrain from challenging him specifically because he follows Qin Chen 17 19 30.
His confidence in Qin Chen contrasts sharply with his caution about his own safety. Against the Blood Wolf, he refuses opportunities unless success appears completely certain. He earnestly considers even a ninety-percent chance too dangerous; Qin Chen recognizes that this attitude gives him a strong chance of staying alive 36 37.
