Background / History

In his previous life, Wu Shuangren was raised by his grandfather after his parents divorced when he was two. Both parents established new families and distanced themselves from him. After winning the UFC championship, he ignored their attempts to reconnect and sent the news to his grandfather instead 1.

He subsequently transmigrated into a parallel world ruled by the declining Wu Dynasty. His new body belonged to a seventeen-year-old Bo County constable with the same name, who had disobeyed orders to remain at the county yamen and died from a bandit’s palm strike 1 2.

Although he inherited his predecessor’s memories, they did not substantially alter his personality. He initially struggled to regard Wu Dongrong and Xu Nanzhi as his parents, but their concern and support gradually gave him an unfamiliar sense of having people behind him 3 24.

Appearance

Wu Shuangren’s new body has long hair, delicate features, and a youthful, boyish face, with much of his appearance inherited from Xu Nanzhi 2 3.

  • Untrained body at arrival: Initially lacks his former physique, scarred hands, and cauliflower ears 1.
  • Martial clothing: Wears dark blue fighting clothes with bound cuffs and trouser legs, or a plain black martial outfit 52 142.
  • Battlefield equipment: Frequently fights in infantry armor with a long saber 119 179.
  • Striking youth: His appearance repeatedly surprises people who expect an older commander or established martial expert 142 176.

Personality

Wu Shuangren is ambitious, disciplined, and intensely interested in combat. He carries over his professional habits of preparing before contests, reviewing his performance afterward, and setting linked short-, medium-, and long-term goals. His persistent search for sparring partners leads others to regard him as a martial arts fanatic 3 36 43 45.

He values independence more than official advancement. Expecting the Wu Dynasty to collapse, he prefers building his own local power to pursuing court rank or risking his life in another faction’s service. He treats money, food, equipment, and reliable personnel as foundations of both martial cultivation and military strength 11 38 45.

His pragmatism coexists with loyalty and chivalry. Xu Jing’s respect grows from watching him avenge allies, protect civilians, and climb a city wall ahead of his soldiers to rescue captives. The author explicitly describes him as a man with principles, chivalry, and ambition—not a benevolent sage 209 213.

His upbringing also makes him strongly self-reliant. He does not blame his parents for dangers arising from his own decisions, and acknowledges that their instruction and practical help have already enabled his survival 94.

Abilities & Skills

Match for One Person

His defining Trait improves his performance in individual combat, prioritizing technique before increasing raw power 13 14.

  • Adaptive enhancement: Makes fuller use of existing abilities and strengthens them when necessary to overcome an opponent 13.
  • Technique development: Can alter learned martial arts into superior forms rather than merely improving their execution 14 73.
  • Opponent targeting: Bases enhancement on an opponent’s upper potential, even when that opponent cannot currently bring their full strength to bear 42.
  • Unique Trait perception: Wu Shuangren can see and understand other people’s Traits. The author identifies him as the only person able to see, understand, and actively use Traits 59.
  • Growth through victories: Defeating sufficiently challenging opponents advances the Trait; the same opponent only provides advancement once 68.
  • Stamina cost: Equipping it consumes mental stamina, while combat also consumes physical stamina 3.
  • One-on-one restriction: Allies attacking the same opponent can cancel his enhancement. He therefore assigns Xu Yu to intercept other enemies rather than assist against his current target 10 63.
  • Control limitation: Enhanced cultivation does not grant perfect command of that power. Against Lu Yulin, his own low cultivation limits his execution, and he encounters an opponent whose technique surpasses his enhanced skill 84 235.

Internal Skills

Xu Nanzhi teaches him the foundations of Nine Rivers Suppressing the Mountain, from which his altered Method of One Person develops 16 21 43.

  • Training components: Sun-Observing Meditation, the Mountain-Moving Method, Mental Power training, and Spirit Peak Stance 13 16 18 21.
  • Lasting cultivation benefits: Experiencing enhanced Qi and blood circulation helps his ordinary cultivation even after the Trait’s temporary boost ends 35.
  • Mental breakthroughs: Confronting and overcoming perceived obstacles can advance his Internal Skill, rather than progress relying on repetitive exercise alone 43 77.
  • Method of the Escaped One: Uses this method to find counterattacking opportunities during his later duel with Lu Yulin 236.

Saber Arts

His saber training begins under Hou Huai and develops into Cloud Tiger Seven Kills through repeated Trait-assisted refinement 5 13 73.

  • Three Ultimates Tiger Baleful Intent Saber: His original foundation, combining a small number of forms with numerous variations and Internal Skill requirements 13.
  • Cloud Tiger Seven Kills: Integrates fierce attacks with the subtle changes of Cloud Tide Returning Wave Steps; exists in both short- and long-weapon versions 73 74.
  • Tiger Lies Hidden in the Abyss: Opening form that gathers power and provides a stance to return to after the other six killing moves 73.
  • Wind Rises and Clouds Surge: Uses a rising, spiraling attack to break defenses 73.
  • Force borrowing: Later refinement allows him to accumulate an opponent’s force and redirect power between successive attackers 131 132.
  • Teaching requirement: Superior techniques require Internal Skill to reproduce their full effect; Xu Yu initially copies only their outward form 74.

Cloud Tide Returning Wave Steps

Footwork taught by Xu Nanzhi, originally intended to accompany sword techniques and possessing a higher ceiling than Hou Huai’s saber art 35 73.

  • Supports evasive movement, angle changes, and the power-gathering variations incorporated into Cloud Tiger Seven Kills 35 73.
  • Helps him exploit trees and terrain while surrounded by armored monks 92.

Defensive and Burst Techniques

  • Leakless Golden Body: Practices it during recovery and uses it to endure repeated attacks and capture attempts on Rong Province City’s wall 196 197.
  • World-Purifying Wisdom King Mantra: Activates it for a decisive burst that severely wounds Lu Yulin; afterward, he suffers turbulent Qi and blood and spits blood 236.
  • Grappling: Uses an armbar to break Liaoming’s right arm during their mounted ambush battle 92.

Military Leadership

Wu Shuangren builds a disciplined force while learning practical warfare from experienced officers 36 111 146.

  • Recruit training: Uses formation drills, strict discipline, and cloth markers to teach men who initially cannot distinguish left from right 36.
  • Merit-based organization: Adapts military ranks from his previous world, separates rank from appointment, and leaves command posts open as incentives for performance 146.
  • Recruitment policy: Accepts selected relatives but forbids them from advertising their connection to him; promotes Chen Tie for demonstrated training and battlefield merit 60 104.
  • Delegation: Relies on Xu Jing for marching and formation expertise and Bai Jinhuan for much of the detailed planning of the narrow-pass ambush 80 111.
  • Finance and oversight: Develops martial contests as a source of revenue and assigns assistants to Mo Zhengxing as the militia’s finances expand 45 85.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fish-Dragon Saber: A saber with a blade three chi and two cun long, a thick spine, and overlapping fish-scale forging patterns. He throws it across Li Ming’s throat during the West River Gang battle 53 66.
  • Modao / long war saber: Used for battlefield combat and the long-weapon version of Cloud Tiger Seven Kills 74 80.
  • Infantry armor: Weighs more than fifty jin; tested against Bai Jinhuan’s saber strikes without hindering Wu Shuangren’s movement 72.
  • Hooked climbing chains: Uses two iron-hooked chains to scale Rong Province City’s wall ahead of his army 196.
  • Warhorses: Learns riding from Wu Dongrong and later receives one hundred fine warhorses as part of Xu Yuebai’s dowry 45 219.

  • Bai Jinhuan — Mo Family chief guard, sparring partner, and military collaborator who contributes to ambush planning and weapon training 36 72 73 80.
  • Mo Zhengxing — Ally responsible for logistics and businesses. Wu Shuangren later places assistants around him as his financial authority grows 45 60 85.
  • Guo Jiwang — Former West River County magistrate who becomes his adviser and openly recognizes him as his lord 100 202 214.
  • Xu Jing — Military mentor and subordinate whose loyalty develops through witnessing Wu Shuangren’s decisions and rescues 111 146 213.
  • Chen Tie — Older paternal cousin who earns rapid advancement through hard training and willingness to risk his life 104.
