Background / History
Lu Yulin was raised by a martial arts family to become a distinguished military officer rather than a wandering jianghu hero. He studied spear techniques and mounted combat from childhood, training alongside the family’s purchased servant, Yan Xiaobing, whom he came to regard as a brother 140 171.
He placed first in Hebei Circuit’s military examinations, then became the top martial scholar in the capital’s examinations. His expected career collapsed after he offended someone powerful and received a humiliating assignment tending the imperial guards’ warhorses. He resigned and returned home 139.
For more than ten years, Lu Yulin continued training and making friends through martial contests. He fought throughout Hebei Circuit’s eleven prefectures without finding an equal, earning recognition as its foremost martial artist 139.
Song Hai coveted his reputation and martial strength. Wu Yan disguised himself as a fortune-teller, predicted a calamity, and directed him southeast. A seditious acrostic poem planted in his home helped turn him into a wanted man. Song Hai subsequently rescued him from the authorities, creating a debt that complicated Lu Yulin’s resentment toward Mount Liang 182 187.
After joining Mount Liang, Lu Yulin occupied its second seat. Song Hai offered him the chief command, but opposition from existing followers and Lu Yulin’s lack of an established following led him to decline. Following the uprising, he became grand marshal, nominally commanding all Mount Liang troops 139.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and broad, with an imposing bearing 139.
- Face and expression: Eyes compared to sparks, with a touch of nobility in his appearance 139.
- Later injury: Wu Shuangren cuts a deep wound from the left side of his face across his chest to his lower abdomen; its eventual healing is not documented 236.
Personality
Lu Yulin takes his greatest pride in personal martial skill rather than intellect or battlefield deployment. A rare opponent capable of matching him excites him: during his first duel with Wu Shuangren, he orders his riders not to interfere. He later dismounts to fight Lin Qian because Lin Qian is stronger on foot, seeking a satisfying contest rather than an advantage 169 171 199.
His early restraint conceals considerable frustration. He tolerates both the humiliation of his failed official career and Mount Liang’s manipulation, partly because he believes resistance is impossible. His debt to Song Hai also prevents him from speaking as freely as Yan Xiaobing about their grievances 182 187.
Killing Wu Yan marks a decisive change. Lu Yulin becomes more aggressive and enterprising, determined to command his own force rather than remain someone else’s subordinate. By his later confrontation with Lin Qian, he defines rebellion as rejecting imposed rules, dismissing the moral restraints Lin Qian still observes 188 234.
His confidence becomes a vulnerability when events escape his control. Wu Shuangren’s resistance unsettles him during their rematch, and his mounting anger disrupts the composure underlying his spearwork. Nevertheless, he chooses survival over a potentially fatal exchange and retreats when grievously wounded 235 236.
Abilities & Skills
Lu Family Spear Technique
A family spear art whose progression is described as a python becoming a flood dragon, then a true dragon. Lu Yulin develops its soaring momentum and variations far beyond Yan Xiaobing’s interpretation of the same school 172 199 200.
- Combines horse-form footwork with dragon-form fist principles, integrating both into spear attacks 171.
- Transfers power through his feet or mount, waist, hips, and spearpoint in a continuous motion 171 199.
- Uses deceptive spear afterimages, coiling movements, sweeps, and sudden return thrusts 171 172.
- Employs Night Battle in Eight Directions to break or knock aside attacks from surrounding enemies 194.
- Initially requires a horse’s momentum to express the technique’s highest realm; his developing Mental Power later removes that dependence 199.
Spear of Fate
His Great Grandmaster-level spear Dao condenses the family art’s elaborate variations into apparently simple straight thrusts. Each successive attack narrows the opponent’s available responses until evasion and redirection become impossible 235.
- Suppresses Wu Shuangren’s Cloud Tiger Seven Kills, preventing its usual borrowing and diversion of force 235.
- Forces Wu Shuangren into direct blocks that cause internal injuries 235.
- Can shift from restrained straight thrusts to expansive sweeps, rising attacks, and downward blows 236.
- Limitation: Wu Shuangren’s Method of the Escaped One finds a surviving opening within its pressure. Disruptions to Lu Yulin’s state of mind make that opening more pronounced 236 237.
[White Qilin]
A personal Trait visible to Wu Shuangren. It initially appears blood-red and is golden when Lu Yulin returns as a Great Grandmaster 171 233 234.
- Burns visibly during his decisive duel with Lin Qian and his later battle with Wu Shuangren 200 235.
- Wu Shuangren identifies its active enhancement as applying to martial arts during their rematch 235.
- Its full mechanics remain unexplained. Earlier suggestions that it might aid breakthroughs are Wu Shuangren’s speculation, not an established effect 223.
Mounted Combat
Trained from childhood as a prospective general, Lu Yulin synchronizes his movements with his warhorse and incorporates its charge into his spear strikes 171.
- Gains the upper hand over Zhang Liao during their mounted pursuit, nearly unhorsing him 140.
- Breaks through cavalry and shield-and-spear formations by deflecting arrows, snapping spear shafts, and piercing shields 140 192.
- Remains formidable after dismounting, immediately continuing his first duel with Wu Shuangren on foot 172.
Internal Skill and Physical Control
His Great Grandmaster breakthrough transforms both his Internal Skill and body, including breathing, exertion, sinews, bones, and flesh 200.
- Projects his voice across an open battlefield, overwhelming the noise of thousands fighting 233.
- Can unleash his potential to increase combat output or escape danger 172 236.
- Retains fighting strength despite a near-disemboweling wound because of his tempered body and meticulous bodily control 236.
Military Command
- Commands more than two hundred heavily armored personal guards during the battle outside Yi Prefecture City 171.
- Leads attacks personally, while entrusting broader battlefield command to Wu Yan 140 171.
- After breaking away, plans a surprise counterattack to obtain supplies and avoid being exhausted by pursuit 188.
- Leads a successful night raid against Xiong Lang’s camp, capturing more than three thousand Shannan Army soldiers 194.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spear — His principal weapon in mounted and foot combat 140 171 199.
- First-rate warhorse — Reaches full speed within a hundred paces; injured during his first duel with Wu Shuangren 171 172.
- Bracer — Used to block Wu Shuangren’s descending saber, but fails to prevent his left wrist from breaking 172.
Relationships
- Yan Xiaobing — Childhood training companion and nominal family servant, but effectively his brother. Remains his confidant and follows him after his break with Mount Liang 140 182 187.
- Song Hai — Former superior and apparent rescuer. Song Hai’s role in drawing him into outlawry leaves their relationship burdened by both obligation and resentment; Lu Yulin ultimately rejects his amnesty policy 139 182 187.
- Wu Yan — Former strategist and architect of the scheme that destroyed his peaceful life. Lu Yulin eventually confronts and kills him with a palm strike 187.
- Wu Shuangren — Rival who inflicts his first true individual martial defeat. Lu Yulin seeks a rematch as a route to advancement, but loses again after becoming a Great Grandmaster 172 188 236.
- Lin Qian — Former comrade and fellow spear expert. Their disagreement over attacking the Yi Province Militia leads to a duel that triggers Lu Yulin’s breakthrough; they later clash over the meaning of rebellion 198 200 234.
- Zhigang — Supports his counterattack plan, then intervenes to prevent him from killing the defeated Lin Qian 189 200.
- Liang An — Follower who fights alongside his guards and retreats with him after his second defeat by Wu Shuangren 171 236.
- Zhang Da — Temporary ally whom Lu Yulin supports against Wu Shuangren. Despite their cooperation, Lu Yulin privately intends to kill Zhang Da after defeating Wu Shuangren 234 235.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Tiger Soul Pass
Lu Yulin pursues Zhang Liao after a night raid burns Mount Liang’s supplies, but cannot prevent his escape into Tiger Soul Pass. The next day, Lu Yulin reaches the walls three times and is repelled each time. The arrival of thirty thousand Shannan reinforcements ultimately forces Mount Liang’s withdrawal 140.
Defeat at Yi Prefecture City
Assigned ten thousand elite troops for another southern expedition, Lu Yulin advances with Wu Yan and later joins the battered vanguard with five thousand elites. During the decisive battle, he leads his armored guards against a weakened militia flank and encounters Wu Shuangren 149 161 171.
Their mounted duel continues on foot after both horses fall. Wu Shuangren breaks Lu Yulin’s left wrist, disarms him, and pursues him. The sight of Mount Liang’s supposedly undefeated champion fleeing devastates its morale and helps turn the battle into a rout 172.
Break with Mount Liang
His unhealed wrist prevents him from accepting Wu Shuangren’s subsequent challenge outside Rong Province City. When the city falls, he escapes through the western gate with nearly five thousand elites 183 184.
Although initially willing to support Song Hai’s amnesty negotiations, Lu Yulin changes course. He kills Wu Yan, announces his departure from Mount Liang, and allows those seeking amnesty to leave freely. He proposes establishing a new stronghold in Lu Province under his own leadership 182 187 188.
Counterattack and Great Grandmaster Breakthrough
Leading more than 2,700 men, Lu Yulin turns back, captures a grain convoy, and raids Xiong Lang’s camp. Learning that Xu Rong intends to attack the Yi Province Militia, he moves toward Rong Province City to exploit the situation and seek revenge 192 194.
Lin Qian refuses to participate and challenges him. Lu Yulin wins their duel and enters the Great Grandmaster realm, but Zhigang intervenes before he can kill Lin Qian 198 200.
Rematch at Zhou Family Village
Lu Yulin arrives with only a small entourage to support Zhang Da. His Great Grandmaster presence initially dominates the battlefield, and his Spear of Fate places Wu Shuangren at a severe disadvantage 233 234 235.
Wu Shuangren develops the Method of the Escaped One to counter his spear Dao. Zhang Da’s death further disrupts Lu Yulin’s state of mind, and a sudden burst from the World-Purifying Wisdom King Mantra enables Wu Shuangren to slash him deeply. Lu Yulin escapes with Yan Xiaobing and Liang An; Wu Shuangren declines to send Lin Qian after him because the wounded Great Grandmaster could still kill his pursuer 236.
Reputation After His Defeat
News of his loss spreads through Chang’an, where many question whether he truly attained the Great Grandmaster realm. This skepticism stems from his lack of notable post-breakthrough victories and his defeat by the nineteen-year-old Wu Shuangren, rather than evidence disproving his advancement 238.
